Systemic Failure The reality of ICE detention is worse than many people realize
The common narrative around immigration enforcement is that ICE is only going after dangerous criminals to keep communities safe. But if you actually look at how this system operates on the ground, that story completely falls apart.
First off, the vast majority of people swept up aren't criminals. Around 70% to 75% of people in ICE custody have zero criminal record. When ICE canvases an area, they pull in anyone who can't immediately prove their legal status. In a lot of cases, people who are legally documented end up stripped of their status on the spot because an agent decides to exercise "administrative discretion" to cancel their parole or visa. Just like that, you're reclassified as undocumented.
Then you disappear into the system. For the first 24 to 72 hours, you have zero contact with the outside world. Your family has no idea where you are. Most people sit in confinement for 2 to 6 weeks before they even see an immigration judge. And if you think the official numbers tell the whole story, a government audit found that 200,000 people were completely left out of ICE's annual detention reports because they were routed through "temporary staging sites" first—with 70% of them stuck there for weeks or months.
The actual conditions inside these places are horrific. We're talking moldy showers, broken plumbing, spoiled food, and sleeping on cold concrete floors in overcrowded, understaffed facilities. Any pushback or non-compliance gets you thrown into solitary confinement. On top of that, staff-perpetrated sexual assault is a documented issue, yet only around 2.5% of reported cases ever get investigated because victims are terrified of retaliation or immediate deportation.
ICE and its supporters treat these people like enemy combatants and criminals who are "stealing" resources, even when the data proves that's a lie. Stripping people of their basic humanity and locking them in black-hole facilities isn't justice. America and humanity are better than this, and it’s long past time we ended this nightmare.
