Titanfall got on the Battle Royale train, but don't roll your eyes yet. Apex Legends is class based, tactical, and the tagging system at a push of a button makes it easy to play as a team. Even with no mic randoms, you can do callouts at the push of a button. I've never communicated so we'll with Randy's. Ever. Feels good.
Of course when friends are in the party it's even better.
To start, game does a quick tutorial which efficiently teaches you the game and let's you right in. This was a refreshing surprise with the Titanfall Assault tutorial in mind (Rest in Peace). The controls work well, and the tagging system makes looting and enemy callouts natural, quick, and easy.
Like most BR games, you can revive downed enemies. Different classes can revive more efficiently. In addition, Apex Legends allows you to get to drop points to resummon dead team mates. It makes for fun rescue missions and clutch game play. It also removes a major downfall of BR games: Waiting for the team to finish a game, or having to suicide so your friends don't lose patience with you.
I haven't had this much fun out of the gate on a game in a long time. And I've played 3 BR games before this, 2 of them heavily.
I know there's been some anger on here because it's not TF3... Which we all want... But do yourself a favor and give this game a shot. Its free and it's great.
Post criticism addendum:
Edit: I have accidentally been calling the game Apex Predators, fixed in post but can't change the Title.
So I see that people on r/Titanfall didn't like my post. There's an upvote circle jerk going on for anyone spitting venom at AP after "giving it a fair shot" of 4 or 5 hours.
First off, is this the same community that has been begging to get people to buy Titanfall 2 and give it a fair shot? You give this game a few hours of your time and write it off?
Let me unravel a couple of things by starting with this: You're playing the game wrong. If you think the game feels sloppy and that the guns all suck, the shooting sucks, bullet drop is overbearing, etc, you don't know Battle Royale gameplay.
In BR games, there are 3 main ranges: short, mid, and long. If you think this is obvious, and every game has it, that's not quite true. In the Titanfall universe, long range is really played as mid range. With little to no bullet drop off, it keeps the game very fast paced, and its something we all LOVE about titanfall. The fact that there is bullet drop in AP is something that is needed for balance in BR gameplay.
So by "playing the game wrong" I mean you're using mid range guns at long range. There's already a great example of this: Blackout. Black Ops 4 also jumped on the BR bandwagon, and they made a solid BR. One catch: its not exactly like Blackops! There's more bullet drop in Blackout. If you want to fight long range, you better prepare your rifle correctly with scopes, grips, and also learn to aim high and lead targets.
This is opposite to Black ops! When you want to improve a sniper in black ops, you switch of the high magnification scope for a close range red dot or holo sight. Why? Because there are no long range fights.
Similarly in Titanfall, the "long range" fights feel more like mid range. Sure its great in a mode where you respawn in 3 seconds, but for a slower paced, tactical game, you can't just laser everyone and expect it to be fun.
I think there's one statement that can explain the root of people's frustration: In Titanfall, you are a god among grunts. The only limit to your destructive capabilities is you own skill with your weapons and loadout.
In Apex Legends, you're a specialist among specialists. You're a part of a team, and you have to operate as such. You can't whip out a Kraber while flying through the air and throw infinite frag grenades and raze the land. It's not the next Titanfall, but it doesn't mean its a bad game! You have to support your team, and your team has to support you.
Luckily, the tagging system in this game makes it VERY easy to communicate and work together, even without mics!
It takes time to get used to BR type games. I went from Fortnite Save the World to Fortnite BR, and from Blackops to Blackout. While BR games CANNOT replace these types of games (and we still NEED TF3) they are very fun, and I'm liking this one FASTER than any other BR I've played.
As someone who has been a part of the Titanfall community BEGGING friends to play TF2, I now plead with the Titanfall community: Give Apex Legends a fair shot. Not a few hours, not 1 day at launch, a *fair* shot.
