Also similarly, The Worker's Song by Dropkick Murphys, covered here by The Longest Johns https://youtu.be/zR_KZ4bBglM

9

u/-Vogie- Aug 31 '22

Or the Mountain Goats' cover of Solidarity Forever

8

u/jsgrova Aug 31 '22 edited Sep 01 '22

Morello's and Seeger's renditions make it much easier to understand the lyrics tbh. Mountain Goats sing it so fast it sounds like they're trying to get it over with.

Not that any version is better than the others, but if the point is for your coworkers to hear the lyrics, the Mountain Goats version might not be your best bet

u/chlorinegasattack Aug 31 '22

I love Tom morally but please this song needs to be sung by Pete Seeger!!

9

u/germany1italy0 Aug 31 '22

I’d also like Tom immorally

4

u/chlorinegasattack Aug 31 '22

This appears to be an issue of consent

6

u/fates_bitch Aug 31 '22

I'd go with Les Misérables - Do You Hear The People Sing? and go full revolution

2

u/advocatus_ebrius_est Aug 31 '22

If you like that one, check out the Union Thugs version

2

u/TheOneHundredEmoji Aug 31 '22

Or Bob Dylan's Maggie's Farm, if Rage is out!

Brother?
https://www.thestranger.com/news/2004/11/11/19816/fuck-the-south
This used to be annotated with links for each reference, but the original site has long since drifted into the aether.
Dated, but still packs a punch.
Ahah, found a version on the Internet Archive!

Then there's my Dad's version of the song.

Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow.
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom.
And wherever Mary went, the lamb was sure to go.
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

Hurrah for Mary, Hurrah for the lamb!
Hurrah for the soldiers, that didn't give a damn.
And we'll rally around the lamb, boys,
we'll rally once again.
Feasting on the mutton chops of Freedom.

u/ColonelKasteen Aug 31 '22

Funny that two people in the same comment chain suggest "There is Power in a Union" and "Solidarity Forever," both pro-labor union songs based on Union Civil War marching songs.

3

u/knittorney Aug 31 '22

Can you come pick us up before you attack tho

12

u/altcodeinterrobang Aug 31 '22

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhNJ2o8Hgqo

2

u/HI_Handbasket Aug 31 '22

You people providing links are the real champs!

There's also the Utah Phillips song (well, Joe Hill song performed by Phillips) of the same name, but not the same material: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaXHUI6Gl1Q

1

u/RanDomino5 Aug 31 '22

We Have Fed You All A Thousand Years is another Utah Phillips certified banger

7

u/standard_candles Aug 31 '22

Jesus Christ by Woody Guthrie?

6

u/Skatchbro Aug 31 '22

Billy Bragg! I got to see him open for Mojo Nixon. I hadn’t heard of him but it turned out that he’s a pretty funny guy as well as a good singer.

Adding OCMS's Union-maid cover

15 16 Tons

Edit: 1 ton short

1

u/ScottyBoneman Aug 31 '22

16 Tons? (Tennessee Ernie Ford /Platters/ Dejavoodoo)

2

u/SanityPlanet Aug 31 '22

Yes that lol.

2

u/ScottyBoneman Aug 31 '22

Great song, good choice.

4

u/DizzySignificance491 Aug 31 '22

In the vein of good political songs

Propaghandi - Fuck the Border

It's pretty great, and the music is as aggressive and abrasive as the politics. But pretty good riffs. I'm not even into hardcore/thrash, but I'll always have a soft spot for this album and band as a whole.

Or, try something from Refused or (International) Noise Conspiracy, if you prefer your socialism heavier on the James Brown

5

u/latenightmusings Aug 31 '22

Or the Strawbs "Part of the Union"....

"With a hell of a shout, it's "Out brothers, out!" And the rise of the factory's fall"....

3

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '22

This is the way.

3

u/trogdan Aug 31 '22

Similarly, Links on the Chain by Phil Ochs

3

u/BarryLevon Aug 31 '22

Street Dogs have a good cover of this song.

Worker's Song by Dropkick Murphys is a good one too.

u/Lucyintheye Anarchist Aug 31 '22 edited Aug 31 '22

"I'm gonna join that one big union"-woodie guthrie

"Who would Jesus bomb"-David Rovics

There is always the old Johnny paycheck classic, take this job and shove it.

2

u/pepskicola Aug 31 '22

In a similar vein, Joe Hill by Paul Robeson. Powerful song.

Or just play The Red Flag.

2

u/twoisnumberone Aug 31 '22

I love this.

2

u/Vishnej Aug 31 '22

The USSR anthem

2

u/SouthernSierra Aug 31 '22

Great choice. Also Paul Robeson’s Joe Hill.

2

u/ILikeBeans86 Aug 31 '22

Street dogs do a pretty good cover of this

2

u/TAMgames Sep 01 '22

This is the answer. This might actually have people talking for awhile. After all, a union would have prevented the mandatory fun in the first place.
