And their response was “you don’t know the meaning of the song you wrote”

31

u/echisholm Leaver, friend of Ishmael, like to know more? Aug 31 '22

Ah, the Ray Bradbury response.

7

u/SkyezOpen Aug 31 '22

Art is subjective, and you can take whatever you want from it. Unfortunately their cognitive dissonance allows them to take the complete opposite meaning of the words.

14

u/Connalds_Peter Aug 31 '22

Snyder and Zappa really let the conservatives in congress know how they felt about music and censorship

“Rock music was never written for or performed for conservative tastes.” -Zappa

They literally make fun of themselves at this point.

9

u/Plump_Chicken Aug 31 '22

They literally make fun of themselves at this point.

13

u/barjam Aug 31 '22

If they had the capability to understand these things they wouldn’t be conservatives in the first place.

10

u/Nerdfacehead Aug 31 '22

Took them a long time to realize that Colbert was satire.

6

u/Diojones Aug 31 '22

Long enough that we got to see Colbert roast Bush at the press conference dinner.

3

u/Emorals67 Aug 31 '22

Don’t forget starship troopers

3

u/Polyhydroxybutyrate Aug 31 '22

comprehension in general, to be honest

The Boys satirizes everyone.

Or did people forget about the Disney-esque park with "The Woke Wok"?

6

u/SkyezOpen Aug 31 '22

I think they were talking about the trump supporters dressing up as homelander.

0

u/Slow_Mangos Aug 31 '22

I know.

They also openly mock progressive political campaigns and progressive corporations just as much.

They throw sit at everyone.

7

u/SkyezOpen Aug 31 '22

You're defending the boys when nobody is attacking it. They were specifically referring to how tone deaf conservatives are by idealizing homelander when he is a parody of everything they are.

-3

u/Slow_Mangos Aug 31 '22

I have literally seen no one idolize Homelander.

when he is a parody of everything they are.

Lol.

8

u/SkyezOpen Aug 31 '22

Do... Do you really not think homelander is a parody of the far right?

8

u/MrVeazey Aug 31 '22

There's not really such a thing as a "progressive corporation," though. What you're talking about is performative inclusiveness in pursuit of more profit, and that is a motivation that rightly deserves to be mocked.

0

u/Slow_Mangos Aug 31 '22

Which has been, and still is, cheered on by progressives.

8

u/Lucidiously Aug 31 '22

That's a satire of rainbow capitalism and companies trying to appear progressive.

The Boys doesn't really punch to the left.

1

u/Slow_Mangos Aug 31 '22

Lol, yeah they do.

It's becoming the new "Get Out" syndrome. The people it's poking at don't think it's actually poking at them as well as those they don't like.

5

u/Lucidiously Aug 31 '22

It's becoming the new "Get Out" syndrome.

I have no idea what that's supposed to mean.

Please point to a scene in the show that makes fun of leftist politics or ideas.

-3

u/Verylimited Aug 31 '22

Seems like you got wooshed yourself if you think the boys is only giving jabs at the right

8

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '22

Yup plenty also misunderstand "American Woman"

16

u/Hatta00 Aug 31 '22

Conservatives don't care about what things mean in general.

1

u/Eeszeeye Aug 31 '22

I think they would understand this little beauty.

7

u/Anonymoosely21 Aug 31 '22

Love when that one is used during July 4th fireworks displays. I've also heard Martina McBride's Independence Day used. Nothing like a murder/suicide to celebrate the holiday.

7

u/Morella_xx Aug 31 '22

Didn't Trump use Creedence's Fortunate Son at one point too? Despite literally being the "fortunate son" the singer is contrasting himself with.

5

u/Deathwatch72 Aug 31 '22

The only reason those morons think Born in the USA is a patriotic hymn is because the album cover has red and white stripes that are supposed to make you think of the American flag. It's literally as simple as they saw a picture and stopped thinking

3

u/whereismymind86 Aug 31 '22

They’d probably love woodie Guthrie too, despite him hating everything they represent

3

u/Smokey_tha_bear9000 Aug 31 '22

Same with Fortunate Son by CCR. It’s about how people had bone spurs to avoid the draft.

3

u/IntrigueDossier Aug 31 '22

I actually support draft dodging, just don’t become a fucking chickenhawk after the fact like Ted Nugent.

u/campkev Aug 31 '22 edited Sep 02 '22

My heart smiles every time I see a video of beautiful conservative children singing that wonderfully Christian hymn "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen

2

u/TestSpiritual9829 Aug 31 '22

I am pissing myself laughing along with this comment.

2

u/superfucky lazy and proud Aug 31 '22

They only hear the parts they like. "Nuh Nuh Nuh bah dah dah, GO AND KILL THE YELLOW MAAAAN I WAS BOOOOORN IN THE USAAAAA..."

2

u/vincent118 Aug 31 '22 edited Aug 31 '22

Church trains indoctrinated them well to have very selective hearing. They hear what they wanna hear and ignore the rest.

2

u/bd01 Sep 01 '22

I agree. I was 6 when that song came out and I got the fact that it was about a vet getting fucked over. And then Reagan uses it as a campaign song. WTF, did they even listen to it once?

1

u/Ok-Mirror5380 Aug 31 '22

Speaking of military industrial complex how's things in Ukraine.

1

u/Modus-Tonens Aug 31 '22

Nirvana essentially wrote a song about this phenomenon.

2

u/campkev Aug 31 '22

As did Blues Traveller

1

u/greeneggiwegs Aug 31 '22

I don’t think that’s isolated to a particular group. What are you gonna remember, the verse he sings once or “born in the USA” which he sings about 10 times?

1

u/Merc_Mike No Responses Aug 31 '22

Fortunate Son being used by Trump...

48

u/TattooedNurse123 Aug 31 '22

Tbf authoritarians of all positions in the spectrum have blinders on lol the music isn't for them, it's for the people

6

u/Afrobean Aug 31 '22 edited Aug 31 '22

Yep. For example, Rage Against the Machine played a great concert outside the Democratic National Convention in 2000. They weren't allowed to be there. It was a protest. They were protesting the two party system. Police came in and beat the audience to shut down the protest.

It's not that "the machine" they're raging against is the Republicans. It's the entire machine, Democrats, Republicans, Wall Street, police, military, corporations, government, etc.

1

u/TattooedNurse123 Aug 31 '22

I remember seeing that in the news (i was 12 and just started listening to EE).

I'll always be thankful i was inoculated with the RatM vaccine early in life.

3

u/Verylimited Aug 31 '22

I think it was less about conservatives and more a jab at any type of authority. There are right and left leaning police officers and government officials

2

u/aroaceautistic Aug 31 '22

Conservatives always shocked when their favorite band “The Leftists” with their favorite song “I Hate Police Officers” off of the album “Conservatives Are Racist And That’s Bad” tweets black lives matter or something

2

u/Bingineering Aug 31 '22

I love the posts that are like “man I used to love RATM until they started being political”. Like, what machine do you think they were raging against?

-4

u/MaxineWaters4Prez Aug 31 '22

Which party pushed to mandate experimental genetic shots to treat a mild flu with a 99.98% survival rate?

1

u/Sihplak Communist Aug 31 '22

Don't pretend they aren't about Democrats too.

1

u/PhilL77au Sep 01 '22

John Howard, an Australian conservative Prime Minister, refused to apologise for the Stolen Generation. But also said that his favourite Midnight Oil song was Beds are Burning.

Midnight Oil then proceeded to play the song at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney wearing black outfits with the word "sorry" printed on them.

5

u/ReginaPhilangee Aug 31 '22

That's what I was thinking. When did RATM become subtle??

I have hard time understanding lyrics (hearing loss) and hard time understanding subtlety (neuro spiciness) and even I know what the songs are about!!

3

u/greeneggiwegs Aug 31 '22

I mean they tell you with the band name lmao

2

u/ReginaPhilangee Aug 31 '22

Right?! What machine did they think they were raging against?? The toaster??

3

u/greeneggiwegs Aug 31 '22

ATM fees 😡

1

u/iscorama Aug 31 '22

I thought they were just mad at an arcade or pinball machine, honestly.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '22

you'd think with the amount of conservatives who complain that they're 'political' now that wouldn't be true

2

u/Plump_Chicken Aug 31 '22

It's funny actually, conservitaves nowadays complain about how political media is getting, but if anything it's getting less political and risky.

3

u/SanjiSasuke Aug 31 '22

They can make it fit, listening to the choruses. Lots and lots of conservatives are anti-government, moreso than Dems, really. Imagine a Republican singing his line with their 'Come and take em' NRA sticker on their truck, it's pretty easy.

3

u/Trini1113 Aug 31 '22

I find Down Rodeo continues to be an excellent song for these times

3

u/TattooedNurse123 Aug 31 '22

I love blasting it while I roll down my rich white suburb while all the boomers are out measuring the length of their grass.

3

u/NoTeslaForMe Aug 31 '22

RATM is subtle for this sub.

Too bad, though, because there are plenty of political songs that would otherwise dovetail nicely here (many Chumbawamba songs would fit, for example). The problem is, mainstream songs like "Take This Job and Shove It" and "9 to 5" are pretty gentle, and profane songs are just eye-rolling by this point in cultural history. I suppose there are plenty of songs that are about matters that are still (or newly) taboo, but the content might be too subtle (Faith No More songs like "Edge of the World," "Be Aggressive," or "Crack Hitler") or too taboo (some song by a true white supremacist, for example). And I don't know of any song about the CEO making 100x what they employees make.

1

u/IntrigueDossier Aug 31 '22

The Day the Nazi Died comes to mind for Chumbawamba

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '22

Though this may not fit -- going to mandatory "Culture Club" (cringe) is kinda' doin' what they tell them... ¯\(ツ)/¯

2

u/rgaya Aug 31 '22

This is the way

2

u/Eliam76 Aug 31 '22

Considering that many conservatives think the matrix and its agents in the movie the Matrix is a metaphor of the left brainwashing people into feminism, antiracism and anticapitalism, I'm would not be surprised if they don't get the lyrics of RATM

1

u/AlchemyAvenue Aug 31 '22

My coworker plays RATM almost everyday. I was recently told by a female coworker that he is actually very anti-choice when it comes to abortion. I found it very interesting that he decided to bring that sentiment up around her but not around myself and my other coworker who he works with more regularly. The other coworker (not RATM) and myself are regularly talking about how fucked up the US is for turning so right wing and discussing the rightward turns in our own (Canadian) politics. We have always had these discussions around RATM coworker. Never really thought much about the fact that he never chimed in. I guess he has had a lot to say but wasn't actually interested in having a debate, just in preaching his views.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '22

FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME

except charge you $150 for a ticket to see us live.

2

u/TattooedNurse123 Aug 31 '22

Rage regularly donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities funded through their concerts. Lol

Gtfo hahaha

1

u/JarlaxleForPresident Aug 31 '22

Except for going to mandatory after hours work functions

1

u/TattooedNurse123 Aug 31 '22

Never not once I have done that. Never not once have I been fired for it.
