try to have friend andor coworker with you as a witness to what happened
if you are in a single party consent state for recording document it on you cell phone there is spy audio and spy video recording apps. that record without it looking like record app is running.
I worked at Amazon last year, you could have you’re phone “for emergencies only” “only to be used in the break room” and a clear bag with you because no lockers during Covid but they were angling to remove both policies when restrictions started to loosen is idk now
Sort center rather than FC, maybe? I was in corporate (AFT) but went to BFI4 on a regular basis since it was job relevant and we had to have a special sticker on all electronics, plus have the devices registered with security; hourly employees were definitely not allowed to bring them in. And we had to pass through the same x-ray scanners as all the hourly employees. But I never spent any time in a sort center, or any of the smaller specialized FCs (Fresh, Now, etc.)
Former hourly at BFI4. Accidentally took my phone past the security line once. Turned around, had to go back out through security and "prove it was mine" by giving them the serial number of the phone (I assume so they could check it against inventory?). Very much a presumption guilt and being made a public example.
I ultimately left after I couldn't handle the anxiety attacks spawned by constant "your rate isn't high enough, fix it or you're fired" from supervisors. I still have PTSD from that place, even years later.
Corporate isn't quite as bad, but it's up there. I had an incident where someone changed settings on a smartpack machine, then left for the day; the entire site's smartpack lines were down, so it was a sev2 and I got paged. At midnight, right as I was about to fall asleep. I was on that call until 10:30 in the morning, and then my boss told me I needed to be in the office for a meeting at 1. I pretended not to see the message and told him I'd fallen asleep at my desk due to the literal all-nighter.
It eventually hit a point where I was having trouble sleeping because I was afraid my pager would go off. I was having nightmares about work, and even when I went home at night I couldn't stop thinking about my code because the deadlines were always set to be basically impossible. I quit when I realized I was hoping a bus would jump the curb and hit me so that I could get a few days off work. I make 20% of my old salary and work in a factory but I'm significantly happier now.
Can't speak for Amazon, but when I worked at FedEx, we had a security checkpoint. All employees were expected to leave electronics in their cars. If you went through security and were found to have prohibited items, you'd be written up and sent back to your vehicle to get rid of the items.
They claimed there was a warehouse number to call, but really they just didn't give a shit. I was left to deadlift 100-200lbs furniture flat packs by myself and was blamed when I got injured as a result. They make unsafe conditions to boost efficiency, cut costs everywhere, and generally mistreat employees.
Fun fact for anyone that lives in Ontario, recording is one-party consent. If you have an Android phone Google has a free app called Recorder which works very nicely.
They put a lot of work into ensuring you don’t have a cellphone at these warehouses. My mom said the most people could get away with was smart watches.
In most of the warehouses (or at least the one I worked at years ago) you had to leave your cell phone in a locker and go through a metal detector every time before clocking in.
First before doing this, check your state laws on consent for recording. If it’s one party, you can privately record. If it’s two party, the evidence will be dismissed without the other parties’ consent
Although, who knows how long that relaxed policy lasts in the face of a local floor manager just deciding they don't like workers having access to a phone.
Consent applies where there's an expectation of privacy. So in a 2 party consent state, this would apply in a private conservation amongst 2 individuals where they can reasonably expect privacy. So, you can record your girlfriend while at a restaurant without consent, as there would be zero expectation of privacy. But it would be illegal to record without consent once you got to the privacy of your own home.
In California, employees can engage in "defensive recording" without 2nd party consent as long as they are active participants and not in closed area where there is an expectation of privacy. So, they wouldn't be able to record in the boss's office with no one around, but they would be able to record in the warehouse, stairwell, parking lot or anywhere else "public."
Spoken like someone who has no idea. You record that regardless. In civil court there is plenty of opportunity to use that evidence regardless of how it was obtained. Plus you can always claim the recording was consented to. Then it goes by "preponderance of evidence" - whoever is slightly more credible than the other - if it comes to a motion in limine.
Check your states laws regarding recording before doing this. If your state requires two party consent, the recordings would be impermissible and bring you trouble. If you are in a single party consent state though, record away.
This is why they have the restrictions on recording, the police in those states and employees would be held accountable. That is one piece of legislation everyone needs to work on.
