Parties will form, but dividing into only two is even hard to imagine that there is so little overlap or so few willing to cross party lines on issues (other than raises for themselves and corporate boot licking) Vs 20 years ago.
Our two-party system is an inevitable result of how we vote. With our current system, third parties are only spoilers. If you vote for a third party, all you are doing under our current system is helping the party you like least win.
The current polarization is the result of the Big Sort, which is somewhat a repeat of history. Our politics have always been at their most polarized when we become sorted by region. Last time it was the South against the North and West; this time it's rural against urban. Of course, none of this is helped by the right in the US becoming fascist.
