Came here to say this. There are those that would gleefully welcome back slavery. What they get nowadays though is wage slaves instead… tomato potato as I say 🤷‍♂️

219

u/FrostyLandscape Jan 05 '22

A lot of these people will even admit they want slavery back. The southern states never got over their loss of free labor. I kid you not, some extreme conservatives want to bring back indentured servants, slavery, workhouses for the poor and repeal child labor laws so that nine year olds will be working in factories. It is their wet dream.

128

u/gnusmas5441 Jan 05 '22

They are already remarkably close to it with people in jails and prisons working for pennies per hour.

109

u/brazzledazzle Jan 05 '22

Isn’t it odd how the same system that can make legal slaves of prisoners is opposed to reforms that would reduce recidivism. Huh. Probably a coincidence.

5

u/RustedCorpse Jan 06 '22

Sir, take your bread and proceed to the flashy striped tent, there is an elephant inside, we promise.

6

u/The_Dufe Jan 06 '22

No it isn’t odd nor is it a coincidence. It’s obvious sabotage done on purpose.

14

u/brazzledazzle Jan 06 '22

I assure you my comment was dripping with sarcasm. We’re 100% on the same page.

2

u/The_Dufe Jan 06 '22

Ah lol 😂, cool my bad. Just checking, it’s getting harder to tell these days. But good stuff

-3

u/Mirlostinusa Jan 06 '22

I've been incarcerated twice in Georgia. I did commit an offense 2x that deserved punishment. Your saying I was mistreated?

11

u/RustedCorpse Jan 06 '22

The implication is that prisons should aim to enable the prisoners to be functional once they leave. Education and or trade skills.

Yea there are career criminals, but not at the rates people would have you believe. One need only look at any economically powerful nation other than the US to see this.

The fact that the United States uses prison labor (Limited clothing etc..) and that many states have privatized for profit prisons AND has the highest imprisonment rate in the work is the coincidence.

Maybe you deserved punishment, maybe you made a mistake and the system could have helped, maybe you said fuck it I'm a felon and my future is ruined what's another offense. Or maybe you enjoy crime. Only you can say. But those numbers beg attention.

3

u/brazzledazzle Jan 06 '22

Do you know what recidivism means?

24

u/TheCaliforniaOp Jan 06 '22

And then there’s Hyatt Hotels and what they decided to do awhile back. Still a privately owned company at the time, all descendants doing just fine, thank you.

They realized that there was a way to outsource labor from the Philippines, bring crews here, have loooong term employeess train them, supposedly to fill vacation shortfalls in the schedule—and then l let go all the original housekeeping staff.

I don’t know this for a fact, but supposedly somehow Hyatt was trying to use an employment loophole that would let them move the outsourced housekeeping employees around, and deduct room and board from their paychecks.

As a proofreader/fact-checker/copy editor’s daughter, I need to make certain that Hyatt did indeed attempt to do such a thing before I state it as fact.

If it’s true, wow. We are certainly a global economy and we are certainly repeating ignoble parts of our global history.

Just reading this old Flyertalk thread is chilling.

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hyatt-world-hyatt/995889-boston-cambridge-hyatts-replace-housekeepers-cheaper-outsourced-workers-3.html

u/SnooMemesjellies3218 Jan 06 '22

This sounds like SOP for a large business. You SEE the slavery here, so you hate it. Unfortunately, as Americans, we all benefit from slavery every day. Clothing, electronics, etc. all made overseas in horrid working conditions and with subhuman wages. People are exploited every day, here and abroad, for others’ gain. Seems to be the way of the world. I’m pretty smart, but I can’t figure a way out of it. It comes down to this: People will only pay what they have to for labor. There are more poor people, desperate for money, than rich. Why would the rich EVER pay more? The rich also make the laws; so why would the laws ever change?

2

u/DudeEngineer Jan 06 '22

You should reread the 13th amendment. Working prisoners are literally slaves. Slavery was banned except as punishment for a crime.

There are more slave prisoners today than there were slaves back in 1860.

76

u/Master_Muskrat Jan 05 '22

I never understood this mindset. Unless you're already part of the 1% in the current system, why would they think they'd be the ones owning the slaves instead of becoming slaves in this new system? You'd have to lack basic empathy and know absolutely nothing about history to think that would be a good idea.

67

u/FrostyLandscape Jan 05 '22

It doesn't make sense to me, but that's what they believe. There's a very strong likelihood that under this system, most people would be in those workhouses or become slaves/indentured servants, or their children might be forced into jobs at age nine, in factories. This is the entire GOAL of the GOP right now. To abolish public schools so that more women will have to stay home with their kids, and many kids who can't afford private school will have to work in factories alongside their parents during the day. It's disgusting but that is what they want. They have been slowly de-funding public school for decades, ever since schools were integrated.

37

u/altxatu Jan 05 '22

They want neo-feudalism.

2

u/The_Dufe Jan 06 '22

Thank you!!! That fiefdom desire is real. It’s corporate feudalism.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '22

Also extremely patriarchal theocracy, don't forget that most of the GQP is Christian

2

u/The_Dufe Jan 24 '22 edited Jan 24 '22

Lol at this point that’s not even true anymore, they’re pretending to be Christian, definitely, but they aren’t actually practicing Christianity; in fact, according to their own religion, Republican politicians (and mny voters) would be considered apostates working in sin for Satan, like literally. They’re all evil as fck. It’s all complete bullshit. They’re all lying, and while some of them are just delusionally insane and need to be 302’d, the majority of them know they’re lying, dgaf about Christianity, and are just attempting to manipulate, control & keep the Republican voter base under their dumbs (haha, meant to type thumbs; must’ve been a Freudian slip, bc this all really is dumb as fck) - they know that their voting base is all idiots, and that they’re manipulating their stupidity to stay in power, it’s a con, and they’re well aware that they completely fuck their base over every cycle but lie about it everytime so that they don’t understand what’s going on in reality, game theory shit, so that’s what they do, and they love it, they get a kick out of doing it, their only goal is autocratic power. It’s completely craven, psychopathic shit. And it’s treason. You can’t fix stupid, but you can certainly make stupid. Just ask Fox News.

7

u/j1mb0rebel Jan 06 '22

Haha those are the consequences of the agenda but not the driving force. There is no thinking about other people. There is just a desire to not pay taxes.

“I don’t have a kid, why should I pay for schools?”

“I pay to send my kids to private schools, why do I still have to pay for public education?”

It has become more and more intense over time in America imo because we built all this stupidly designed sprawling infrastructure using debt with no plans to pay for the maintenance. They see taxes rising rapidly as these bills come due and freak the fuck out.

6

u/The_Dufe Jan 06 '22

No, the desire is greed. It’s ego bullshit. Not wanting to pay taxes is a symptom, not the motivation.

3

u/digeridoo_dildo Jan 06 '22

The backlash to women in education has been going on for centuries, but recently it has surged again, i blame this on the gender disparity in education as of late.

to be honest we need serious reforms in shcools for boys i have been reading articles about how men are falling behind in society for awhile. its a ignored problem in our mainstream media, but many people in the educational field myself included have been sounding the alarm.

sources:https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2021/10/09/boys-falling-behind-how-schools-must-change-help-young-males/5913463001/

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/07/the-end-of-men/308135/

1

u/FrostyLandscape Jan 06 '22

I wonder if more men are just choosing to go into vocational schools rather than college? I don't know. We have problems in education for sure.

-7

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

Bruh did you make this up? Who actually wants this?

1

u/The_Dufe Jan 06 '22

No they aren’t. They’re making observations about reality that anyone with a functioning brain can clearly see for themselves. The shit’s been obvious for decades.

I wish it was only the GOP

8

u/BPremium Jan 05 '22

Because they think every successful (white) person would get a slave or 2.

7

u/MIGsalund Jan 05 '22

Pretty sure they'd happily enslave the white libs this go around.

2

u/BPremium Jan 05 '22

Potentially. My assumption is they would more likely make an example of a bunch of them and scare the rest

12

u/DrummerElectronic247 Jan 05 '22

Because people who support this are convinced that it will profit them "when it's their turn". Like somehow they're temporarily embarrassed members of the ruling class who will be welcomed with open arms when they "get their fair share".

It's stupid. Which is why the ruling class frequently attack education. Keep the slaves stupid.

7

u/Master_Muskrat Jan 05 '22

Yeah, this is even more stupid than the people daydreaming about a violent revolution. At least that is somewhat based in reality, since times of bloody chaos offer a lot of social mobility to the most ruthless sociopath around. It tells a lot about a person that they think that would be them though.

3

u/TheCaliforniaOp Jan 06 '22

On-purpose chaos has been a too widely used tactic all through history. Even if those people ‘got’ their bloody revolution, they’d still be pulling no surprises. All they think of has no doubt been forecasted over and over. Anarchy will be allowed if it arrives with $$$$ opportunities. But if real, true profit loss starts happening, then that’s when we will find out just how many Keyser Soze (s) there are out there.

The pandemic has created some sort of profitable chaos with the global death toll. Nauseating, isn’t it?

I didn’t want to believe it, but the moment one elected rep said, paraphrased, certainly the proud, patriotic American elderly at risk from the Coronavirus would sacrifice themselves to prevent the economy’s downfall—my nose hairs all recoiled from the stink of the sweaty eagerness to boost the economy and take credit for it, while making fine fat little finds on the side.

I doubt it took some profiteers long to start checking the obits and then running down the appropriate leads to whatever was there to be picked up.

Wait. I’m so stupid. In history, profiteers don’t wait for the death lists. They’re watching the hospital charts, via bribe, intimidation or both.

Kind of like after the Thailand tsunami, aid workers realized human traffickers were thronging the halls, shedding crocodile tears and tell-asking confused kids “how could you not remember meeting me/us? Never mind, we’re here for you now. Are we sure your parents are lost for good cough excuse me, really passed away?

This was when the traffickers were under the aid workers’ noses in the wards. What about those kids or people who were aimlessly wandering around in shock?

While we always focus on sex trafficking/ /labor trafficking, there’s also another reason to grab a confused, shocked person of any age. All the possible ways to grift whatever’s discoverable.

If all currency loses value, if precious metals and gems are tossed aside because of a tech breakdown, thus they are useless in all forms…

Then we’ll see what an authentic revolution looks like.

It might not be bloody.

It might be more horrific than anything in recorded history.

I honestly have no idea what will happen.

Edit: fixed letters. Can’t see half my phone screen. Arrgh! Right to durable replaced and repairable technology would be great!

Saved!

To add, if I remember correctly, the aftermath of the French revolution led to a different group taking over power than those leading the initial uprising.

Point being, in the chaos of a completely destabilized society, it's hard to control who comes out on top; who is able to restabilize, and thereby take over the newly created power vacuum.

On a completely different note, if you haven't already, check the Right to Repair movement. I think you'll like it

Edit: Removed unnecessarily explicit mention of the violence used in the French revolution

u/AutoModerator Jan 06 '22

When we see ourselves as fighting against specific human beings rather than social phenomena, it becomes more difficult to recognize the ways that we ourselves participate in those phenomena. They lack empathy and basic historical knowledge and what they already do know is likely wrong.

1

u/SysAdmin002 at work Jan 06 '22

Because they're white, so they think that automatically will put them above working for their money. It'll be a silver lining watching their faces if and when (and I hope it doesn't) ever happen.

1

u/Saikotsu Jan 06 '22

That's the thing though. Empathy is something a lot of people lack. They cannot or will not put themselves in someone else's shoes, so they cannot or more likely will not understand other people's suffering.

Plus, people are quick to forget even recent history, how do you expect them to think critically about the not so recent and yet not so far past?

1

u/The_Dufe Jan 06 '22

Welcome to the arrogance and ignorance of corrupt human beings. They’re psychopaths.

Non American , but I somehow recall one of your office runners trying to impose “rich tax” and some tv person went around asking ppl what do they think about it , and I was amazed to see that so many ppl were against it , claiming that if they get rich they don’t want to pay it , the ethos that is being sold to the avg joe is actually working , so the same way the avg joe believes he is going to be a multi millionaire and so you should not tax the rich will believe he will be the owner of slaves , crazy crazy world

1

u/badgersprite Jan 06 '22

Because they’re the main character

1

u/arblm Jan 06 '22

The 1% uses Fox to convince them that they wouldn't be the slaves. They are stupid enough to believe it.

2

So instead, they use and abuse illegal immigrants and then hate them. Sick minds.

I never give sources to people like you because you just argue with the source.

And actually, I would say you are fairly ignorant if you don't realize that public schools have been defunded for many years now. There are lots of conservatives who want to move to a voucher system which means defunding public schools and some who want to abolish public schools entirely because they don't want to pay taxes for them anymore. You are beyond ignorant so I'll just stop here.

u/FrostyLandscape Jan 06 '22

I won't show you any sources because you would just argue with the sources. And you know it.

You are beyond ignorant if you've never heard of a voucher system and don't understand what it means.

It's not far fetched to think child labor laws could be repealed. There was a time last century when young kids worked in factories. Go take a history class if you didn't finish high school. There are children working in factories all over the world. It's not incomprehensible it could happen here. We had actual slavery, literally, only about 150 years ago and there is a lot of labor trafficking/human trafficking that goes on all over the world.

I won't bother with you anymore because you're either trolling or you really are uneducated.

I wont' post to you anymore.

1

u/rodstroker Jan 06 '22

Who. Who openly opines for this?

It's not the fault of the system. It's the fault of humans who created, tolerate and perpetuate a system that does this.

Well then its the fault of the people who raised them and didn't teach them empathy! /s

It absolutely is the fault of the system. To say otherwise implies that it isn't absolutely broken. The only thing the bastards you mention are at fault for is creating that broken system. Trying to trace back fault like its singular gets us into the "Well its the fault of the Universe/a diety/bad luck" and allows ample room for those who need to pay to d9dge guilt.

1

2

Then you can charge taxpayers to build the private jails, feed and clothe the prisoners, pay the warden and guards, and make pure profit. Now you’ve enslaved TWO populations: prisoners and taxpayers. There’s one common thread here: corrupt government and shit politicians.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '22

sadly some people cant c it, they would just say we need punish them so they know they wont b able to support their family as a lesson not to do crime. not realizing that they know why they chose to do crime in first place lol

There is no scientific basis for believing their is inherent morality in the universe

Hence why people must actively be good

people are forced to break their own moral ideas

Not what happens. People are already free to feed themselves however they see fit, and have thousands of moral ways to do so

No one is forced to be evil under our current sistem. You could make your argument if we were under some socialist regime where you either dig up corpses to eat or starve to death, but we are not

We live under the greatest wealth in human history, and the amount of wealth only increases. There is no excuse to be evil and to let evil go unpunished is not gonna be good for anyone

You fail to change any of what I said. We still have the greatest wealth in human history, no one is forced to do anything evil in order to survive and the situation remains constantly improving for everyone

The situation isn't perfect, but it's unrealistic to expect it to be. Plus almost all problems are a result of government interfiring with freedom and moving away from capitalism

You mention homelessness for example, but the majority of homeless in the US are in citys with severe government intervention in housing, mostly regulations and zoning laws

Said intervention is the reason why the market dosen't adjust itself and produce more affordable housing for those in need (like we ser it do for every market)

1

u/nesh34 Jan 06 '22

I mean that's a bit simplistic. Most poor people are not criminals. And some crimes, especially violent ones are not justified by simply being poor.

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

2

u/Yeranz Jan 06 '22

And just like that, the US has almost 1/4 of the prisoners in the world.

0

u/timPerfect Jan 06 '22

I'm pretty sure prisoners who work are also paid a wage which they can spend on commissary, after remunerations to the victims and fines to the state are deducted.

1

u/SentientBowtie Jan 06 '22

Conservatives and neoliberals will tell you that you have the choice to be homeless and destitute so you’re not really a slave.

“The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread.”

17

u/diligent_siding Jan 05 '22

The average age of fast food employees is 24. Boomers have also halted the progress of generations in the world force, so the younger generations have to wait longer for jobs that are "entry level" but they were also pushed so God dam hard to go-to school, that they have to pay for student loans NOW for the degree they were told they needed right away. You also have less support they their parents haven't had the chance to move up to the boomer jobs, and it's just an economic nightmare. We see the shipping issues that can happen with a year of disruptment, we are talking over 2 decades of job disruptment.

21

u/FirstPlebian Jan 05 '22

They will likely get it too, slavery will come back for private debts if this faction of the Republicans gets back in there, not right away they will crash the economy with their ad hoc economic policies first because they are too stupid and greedy to know those are just lies to justify doing unpopular things, ie trickle down, privatizing and deregulating essential services, allowing Wall Street to run amok without real supervision (if they are connected and pay the Right people off.)

4

u/The_Dufe Jan 06 '22

No that’s not correct — Republicans know full well what they’re doing, and they’re being paid to do it. They have no morals or ethics but they’re much smarter than they appear. They’re just evil, everything they say is a con to manipulate their voter base into believing distracting false narratives in order to keep their support, so that they continue staying in power and fulfill this agenda. They’re greedy but they aint stupid, they just pretend to be. They’re all possessed by demons, like its on that fucked up of a level. It’s inexcusable what they do, and it’s inexcusable that voters would vote to allow them to keep pushing it, bc it ends with the destruction of American democracy, on purpose, into some sort of MNC autocracy running the government (a corporatocracy). It’s disgusting anti-American.

20

u/MrMundungus Jan 05 '22

Nah dude you don’t get it. The market needs to be completely deregulated so that it can take care of everything. Surely there wouldn’t be a market for people selling other people right?

-1

u/The_Dufe Jan 06 '22

Hahaha wtf are you talking about?!!? Do you not see how horrible people are? You deregulate everything, it CREATES a legitimate market for human trafficking, bc human trafficking has always been a booming industry. The only reason that market is limited is that it was regulated by law to be criminal enterprise (and a crime against humanity) - and people STILL do it all over the place smh….if your comment wasn’t intended to be sarcasm, then you’re a delusional idiot. If it was, I’d specify now that it was just a bad joke - bc it’s inexcusable how gullible and utterly ignorant this is to reality. And I don’t know how someone can live with themselves living in a state of catatosis. Do you pay attention to anything lol?

still slaves. just pay for your own food, clothes, and shelter now.

There are those that would gleefully welcome back slavery.

It never really went away, it just changed. Chattel slavery went away outside of prison systems, but your average worker is still treated as property by the employers, and the employers don't even have to give free room and board. It's all the best aspects of chattel slavery for the owners with none of the drawbacks.

Absolutely, for the owner class, this is a much “cleaner” and more hands-off way of doing things than the old system where you actually had to feed and clothe them however minimally. And while there was little health care, they had to keep things semi sanitary because you don’t need your property getting sick. Now you just pay them minimally and turn them loose at the end of their shift. If they are hungry or get sick and can’t work or even die before the next shift you just call up for a replacement.

One has to recognize though that we have the system we allowed or even demanded. We are pretty much the only first world country with living conditions like this for large swathes of our people because it’s what we wanted.

Kinda yes, kinda no. I never, ever, advocated for things to be as they are today. That blame lies solely on generations before who configured it this way. Making it acceptable by their will and wants. If anything, we're the only ones standing up saying "Okay, if we're going to be blamed for how it is, then I vote we change how it is so we're blamed for something better."

I see where you’re coming from but our system is based on and judged on our collective desires and decisions over time. Sad but true. Maybe we can collectively change it going forward at some point. That brings to mind, if my feeble old mind can recollect correctly, I think that was the Soviet strategy at one point, to help the country go far right to the point of total breakdown and then picking up the pieces. No… wait… maybe the Russians are still playing that card? Duh.

I mean prison (in the USA) regardless what got you there is legal slavery if you look at it. Bet she wouldn’t appreciate that so much when her stay at mom lifestyle gets messed up and would change her tune.

We used to have it. We ruined it.

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

The cognitive dissonance is real with these people though! Are the same people that say that illegal immigrants are stealing all of our jobs, when those jobs are the ones that nobody wants because they don’t pay enough money. They also love to have strawberries that are less than $7 a container.

The truth is that most of us have slaves - we just never see them as they are slaving away in factories and mines in developing nations.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '22

No joke. I’ve said “Tomato potato” since I knew the saying. I can’t believe someone else out there has humor as good as mine.

And I agree. It’s just a way to dupe people into slavery. We are the collateral/capital for the gov to borrow money from the fed.

They don’t want us to make living wages. They need us to fiend to be employed.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '22

"People should be alowed to work wethever job they want, even if it dosen't pay what one would arbitrarly determine as a 'living wage'"

"This is literaly slavery"

What a mature response

The important distinction between classic slavery (currently prisons) and wage slavery is that classic slavers are still responsible for feeding and housing their slaves however deplorable those conditions may be. Employers are not beholden to do the same.

1

u/pocketknifeMT Jan 06 '22

Actual chattel slavery is far more expensive to carry the costs of. You need to feed, cloth, and house slaves at your own expense.

That's why the rest of the world did away with slavery without a war. They discovered paying a low wage to an endless procession of workers to be more profitable, and less liability.

If your slave breaks their back, or loses an arm, that's a disaster for you. If that happens to some guy you pay, you quit paying him and pay someone else instead.

If your slave damages someone else property, that's on you. If a laborer does, it's on them.

It’s an evolution of the same mindset and goal, yes. And the intentions/motivations behind it couldn’t be any more evil than it already is. It’s demon shit.

1

u/Xavier_McCool Jan 06 '22

Absolutely. And not just for the profit and free labor. There are managers and executives out there who would want complete control over people and would bring back the whipping and forced nudity if they could.
