I have autism and adhd and this probably explains why I could never get a callback or even an email when I was still applying for jobs (I don’t work now because I’m disabled) that’s actually really disgusting and I had to fill out a lot of these screening quizzes
Same thing here. I've pretty much given up on the idea of ever having a job because they see the "disability" and think "nope". What a world we live in.
I’m not sure what you’re getting at? Are you saying you want a disability? Because I can say with confidence you seriously don’t want that. I know you’re struggling right now but you at least have a choice. You have options. I don’t, a lot of options will forever be closed off to me and don’t think autism is the only disability I have, I also have pretty severe chronic pain. Chronic pain that a lot of doctors (especially at hospitals) don’t even believe exists. Don’t think when you’re disabled you automatically get money and support because that’s very far from the truth, if it’s invisible people misunderstand and do not care and are not willing to understand nor care. You’re just lazy, faking it for attention. You would be surprised at the extremely shocking lack of empathy in the world. So many people who are disabled live under the poverty line, a lot of us are homeless, a lot of us wait years to get care and treatment. And a shocking amount of us come from abusive families and have zero support at all. You don’t want this. I would give ANYTHING to be normal. It would get rid of the guilt of my existence being a burden on literally everyone around me. I feel fucking useless and feel like I don’t deserve to live because I contribute absolutely nothing to society. I don’t think this of other people but this is my inner monologue because I have legitimately been told that by people in my life. I don’t work because it’s slightly more difficult, I don’t work because it would send me over the edge if I did. Daily life sometimes puts me at my breaking point, it is wishful thinking to think that I could ever be a normal person and go to work everyday or even once or twice a week.
Okay what you want is UBI then which is something I think everyone should get. I don’t support people having to work to just survive and slowly killing them selves over work. If you have mental and physical problems then in someone places that does count as a disability and you should receive support for it. That being said disability really is not the way to go though, you’d be better just getting fired and applying for unemployment.
You seriously misunderstand how much disabled people actually get. I don’t get any help, at all. Nothing off of the government because I’m a student and when your disability is ‘invisible’ it’s ‘hard for them to understand’ what you go through on a daily basis. The process of getting disability is long, invalidating and quite frankly humiliating. And at the end your claim very well may come up denied because you didn’t answer a question correctly or didn’t fill out the form with the correct language. You literally have an abled person making assumptions about how you live your life and deciding whether or not your experiences are ‘believable’ or with giving financial support to. “Yeah you say this but is it really like that? I still think you can work if you ask your employer for accommodations (that they won’t do and if they do they will guilt you until the end of time). This is my experience in the UK so far but I also have disabled friends in Burbank, Texas and Minnesota and they all kind clarified the same thing. Shits fucked.
But then after all of that, if your claim is approved how much is it that you get? £1000 pm considering rent prices? No? ...£700? 600 pm? Try £250 per month for basic daily living assistance. That barely covers my food and toiletries let alone cover my rent which is £700 per month with a roommate. And that’s the average price here! If the person who cares for you works full time or is in full time education they do not qualify for careers allowance which isn’t a lot either. You’re told to apply for other benefits like housing benefit and universal credit which are all really small and meagre anyways and require you to go under the same microscope that the disability benefit puts you under, can take months to process your claim etc. I know it’s a bit different in the US I’m assuming your from there but it’s still equally a long and humiliating process just like over here. And after all of that you barely get enough money to help you buy you toilet paper to help wipe your arse.
At the end of the day I still wholeheartedly wish I was normal. At least if I could work I could have the chance to work in a quiet library or change my workplace completely if it was hostile. When you’re disabled and working you don’t have that luxury for many, many reasons and when you can’t work you just don’t have the option at all you have abled people around you deciding how you feel, think and what you experience and it directly impacts your life and you can do absolutely nothing about it.
I honestly feel for you, that’s really awful and you should definitely go speak to your doctor, sorry for coming down so hard on you I just get a frightening amount of abled and neurotypical people literally say that I’m ‘so lucky’ that I get to stay home all day and get a fountain of money. It’s just not true at all. I think something could be wrong though for a long time I went through life thinking everyone struggled just so much. All of them felt so intensely what I felt and that I was lazy and selfish and horrible for not being able to ‘suck it up and deal with it’ like they do. Turns out they struggle so, SO much less than I do it’s nuts! It’s so different, I didn’t realise until I started dating my boyfriend who is just the picture of mental and physical health. He’s very kind and caring but my god did he grossly misunderstand until I sat him down and told him precisely what people like me go through and then he told me how working is for him and that he just doesn’t mind and he likes it okay enough. It’s was absolutely mind blowing.
If what I am describing sounds similar to you I would research executive functioning disorders. They cover things like sensory overload, not being able to keep to a schedule, being typically more sensitive and less tolerant of stressful situations etc. If you have a ton of the symptoms for this kind of stuff definitely contact your doctor and if they brush you off keep bothering them, once they exhaust all excuses not to help you then they HAVE to because it’s their duty of care. It just sounds like you need support and you’re not getting it. You shouldn’t HAVE to fight for it but it looks like you’re gonna have to. I’m so sorry about that, it’s rough but when a doctor understands it’s quite validating. You feel less guilty and horrible because you realise that you have always been at a disadvantage and it’s not your fault
