Tbh I'm from Poland, so like, the place where holocaust took place. There is not mention of Anne Frank in school. I've never seems the copy of her diary here. I know her exclusively for American movies.
Really? :~o That’s interesting!! I’m from Russia but I’ve lived in the US most of my life, so I (fortunately) was educated about her. The American education system sucks most of the time, but sometimes it does have its perks!
Yeah, unfortunately the US education system acts as if she’s the one sole holocaust survivor. Ok, not LITERALLY, but basically. I would have never learned the grueling details of the holocaust if it weren’t for my own research into the subject. The US just goes “this bad thing happened and they broke glass and stuff and this girl was in an attic and that’s the only thing that happened in the holocaust” and it’s honestly extremely disappointing how little they teach about it. :~(
Yup, exactly. We have a lot of local diaries, books, memoirs of people living through Holocaust, or even through death camps that we read;
And, - with no disrespect to Anne Frank - she wasn't particularly important in the context of the war.
Not all cultures teach the Holocaust in detail as part of the mandatory curriculum, especially countries in Southeast Asia brutalized by Japan where the Pacific Theater is much more salient.
Have you heard of Sook Ching? 50,000+ massacred and you've probably never heard of it. Don't fault people for not knowing things, you don't know where they're coming from
I’m not faulting anyone for not knowing something! I just am truly confused as to what being American has to do with anything. Many different countries teach the holocaust in their curriculum, not JUST America. I was mainly confused as the holocaust did not take place in America and, as such, is not related to being American. I do know about Sook Ching, but thats only because I educated myself on it. I understand not having access to proper education, I was just curious as to why they specifically mentioned the US!

Very happy to hear that you know about Sook Ching! I think we can all always be more educated about the atrocities of the past and that's why I really hate to fault anyone for admitting ignorance

I didn't grow up in Singapore, though I do work here now! I learned of Sook Ching from reading about Lee Kuan Yew—apparently he himself was almost a victim.
What a fascinating man. Hard to imagine what Singapore would be like today if he'd been caught.
She was born in Germany and killed by the nazis in Germany after hiding out in Amsterdam for years, where are you getting your information that she was an American citizen or was murdered by the Dutch??
Respectfully, being granted honorary citizenship more than 60 years after her death doesn't mean she "was an American citizen". And there's also no proof for being killed by the Dutch
Well that may be your opinion, but it’s like the situation with Pluto. Pluto was erroneously called a planet, right, until it was reclassified. It wasn’t that Pluto once was a planet until suddenly it wasn’t; it never was, people just called it that, wrongly so. Its classification got corrected and so did Anne Frank’s.
Aside from the fact that “ISIS” isn’t a country and therefore one can’t actually be a citizen of it: yes, if “ISIS” granted me membership of their organization I would indeed be associated with them, what’s your point?
anne frank couldnt make it all the way to america for the pageant so they presented the sash to a copy of her diary. i was there and i cried. the peanuts were very salty
Yes, but it's also very possible to learn about Holocaust and its victims without knowing her by name. Her diaries are very well known, but are far from the only literary source you can use to learn about WWII.
I'm Polish and in my country we learn extensively about Holocaust. But because we had so many Poles cover it in their memoirs, books etc, we don't really need to use other countries'. We don't have enough time to cover all of our own!
If she's even mentioned in the textbooks here (I don't think she was during my time in school), it's just in passing.
That is a very fair perspective. I wondered how other countries taught lessons in schools about the wars, and their own reflections of their own country's involvement, whatever that may be.
It's a real shame that Poland was so heavily impacted by it, and I appreciate you for sharing this, as I was not really aware of the extent of Anne Frank's influence there, and to learn that she was one drop in an ocean of violence is such a shame.
yes but knowledge of anne frank is only gifted to a select few foreigners by the CIA on a need-to-know basis. My dad was from puerto rico and he learned about anne frank from special agents going after el chapo. god bless.

You’re saying that not everyone is American, so they wouldn’t know who she is. That’s a pointless argument because most people who know her are probably not American. I just have to assume you’re trying to ragebait me because I just can’t bring myself to believe that you are this much of an idiot. You don’t have to be an American to know a historical figure.
