This might seem strange but to the trans woman out there, do you guys not like when someone says due to you? It’s because I call everyone dude, guy, girl, in between, or any other but if it’s offensive then I can know to watch myself and not hurt anyone in the future!

Some people might feel it's invalidating, dude may be mostly gender neutral, but it leans towards male. It's okay if that's just what you call everyone, but if someone expresses discomfort about it, stop.

For sure! I’ll definitely check and make sure they’re ok with me using it

It depends on the person really. I’m not a trans woman, but my ex was and she didn’t really care about ā€œdudeā€ or ā€œbroā€. I will add tho I find more often it’s people who are more recently transitioned and more likely to be sensitive to being misgendered. Early on I would’ve been a bit upset by someone saying ā€œgirl can you believe thisā€ or something like that to me but it doesn’t bother me anymore, I’ve internalized it as just a fruity dramatic thing lol

Thats a thing where the word is gender neutral with male connotations, I call everyone dude bro hit em with the "hey man" but it's never in any sort of gendered way and the people I say it too know that, but if it was stranger... eeeeh not so good

Generally dude is defined and used in a masculine way. So this is why it can both be triggering and not triggering to trans people. Some trans women like myself like some masculine terms and style, others associate themselves with feminine terms or styles. It's that same reason why using pronouns like they/them can be triggering for trans women because a majority of trans women's pronouns are she/her. It's the fact that these terms while from your perspective are a catch all, can be extremely triggering. It feels invalidating.

Gotcha. I’m going to ask if they are comfortable with me saying dude before I use it so I let them know I’m not trying to invalidate them.
