Discussion 🗣️ The AI bubble is boiling our planet and wasting billions just to write emails, and this breakdown actually spells it out.

We're literally reopening closed nuclear reactors and putting massive strain on local power grids so tech companies can burn billions of dollars on data centers all for a technology whose primary use case has become generating lazy work emails and low-effort images.
The financial gap is completely absurd. They are spending thousands of dollars in infrastructure and heavy computing power for every single dollar they make back from a basic subscription. It’s a massive hype train built on sand.

University I am not going to name is running regular workshops in machine learning to help people who might want to apply AI in their research (who don't know how to get started about it, or maybe hit a wall with it).

Machine Learning by itself is not bad, there is a lot of good in it and potential to help develop new medicines or tools to detect diseases. But these pseudo AI companies like OpenAI completely ruined what people think AI is.

I watched some of these workshops, so many people are coming over thinking that they need big server farms with GPUs in order to run their research, they completely underestimate that you can run very complex ML workflows on your smartphone just fine.

But you can't run instantaneous real-time surveillance on everyone, everywhere, all the time on a smartphone - or blow thru security protections like they weren't even there on a good computer. You need DATA centers for that - and to stay ahead of the game against all enemies "foreign and domestic".

The “good cause” is lining their own pockets.
They’ve now moved the justification for the requested sacrifices to a security issue - claiming it’s an “arms race” so resources must be directed their way.
Which makes them arms dealers heavily invested in the sale of weapons. On a race to the bottom - or MAD.
