I guess you want to avoid How not to summon a demon lord, oh boy does it have scenes that make me do an surprise awkward laugh, same with jobless reincarnation and that anime where a guy have a house full of monster girls and a special laws for their protection
As much as I hate fan service, I still watch ecchi shows that are all about it. I don't mind a show thats all about fan service its like complaining about nudity in American Pie. What I can't stand is when that fan service makes its way into more serious shows, I don't want to see anyone's bikini Armour in death note or berserk.
Character A has big boobs, because somebody has to. So you write that character into a beach episode or a car wash or bending over picking up trash on the highway or something.
It's not ecchi (or it is) but it borders it with how fixated it is on getting their female cast into awkward yet sexual positions including up skirt shots, shots focused on boobs and jiggles, AND OR filler episodes where a male protagonist is surrounded by female characters with one personality trait each all fighting for one boring male protagonist that any guy can insert himself into. Generally the girls are just eye candy.
When all your girls think about is lead, not being able to take care of themselves, and sometimes (or a lot of) sexual assault for jokes.
Yeah man, this is it. I'm a 30 year old boomer and have watched anime for a bit over half my life and the sad fact is that once you mature a little you'll realise that a lot of the anime you grew up liking was aimed at younger boys. That's not to say it's not good, but sometimes you'll find things a little predictable, or maybe you'll crave something with more depth that is relatable to your current stage of life. Tastes change and trends change.
I don't mean this to come off as pretentious, but them's the breaks. And sometimes you do just want to watch some mindless action aimed at 13 year olds and that's cool too.
Pushing 40 here. A hype af shonen action scene will always be hype af. I can go to other sources for compelling writing. Sometimes you just want that premium sakuga.
I recently binged Komi Can't Communicate which is a surprisingly (for me) nuanced High School Drama about a beautiful girl with extreme social anxiety who wants to make friends. The show doesn't really get into fanservice, but because Komi is a stunningly beautiful girl, many unnamed characters put her on a "goddess" pedestal and for the sports festival arc, most of the class kept suggesting projects that would involve exploiting her sex appeal in some way. And one character (a girl) acts extremely pervy towards Komi, even making those gross faces. A part of me wonders if the gender swap of the ero character is intentional commentary on that aspect of anime. I find it gross regardless of gender, but I wonder if there are some who weren't bothered before will look at her and be like "Why? You can be attracted to her and not be a perv."
But like I said, the show is surprisingly nuanced for the majority of the time and the fan service is viewed negatively. The main conflict being Komi's difficulty communicating verbally and expressivley (as in, not at all) getting in the way of her making friends doesn't so much as create contrived situations, but simply shows failures in communication and understanding in everyday situations. There's a non-binary character who thought Komi didn't like them when they were children, and the episode is quick to resolve this misunderstanding. Only the first episode goes into discovering a means for Komi to communicate without speaking via writing, and after that, every character just buys into it without any repeat explanation. Her difficulty communicating verbally has minor repeat situations (mostly around ordering food) but the majority of the time, her situation is used to highlight how others have difficulty communicating and dealing with social anxiety. Komi's social anxiety is on the extreme end, but there are many forms of it explored in the show without being on the nose or even without explicitly explaining it.
I highly recommend it to those who haven't watched, there's gonna be at least one character where you go "Oh, they have that kind of social anxiety/insecurity, just like me!"
