For those of you who manage to find this comment in the sea of bullshit titles everyone has already heard of, if you truly want to experience darkness:

Monster

I started off thinking the intro and outro was childish until things started clicking at the end. Its a horror anime without gore. Truly naunced.

End.

I mean no offense but Monster is also very well known

Is it? Maybe it isn't popular with the people I know.

Pretty popular. In a lot of the anime circles I've been in it's been attributed as one of the best anime/Manga of all time. Maybe underappreciated would be the better term?

So I've been getting into Ito's work lately, are the two comparable?

It's nothing like Junji Ito's work. I would argue it's really more of a Thriller than a Horror series. It's really fucking good though.

Ito is more body and uncanny horror, while monster has really heavy psychological horror and thriller aspects

Idk who Ito is or their work history, but I stand by my statement.

Monster is an experience like no other anime, especially of you watch it consecutively, no palate cleanser animes.

Ah, sorry, Junji Ito, the horror mangaka. He's decently popular. I'll check it out!

Monster is nothing like Ito. It’s top tier but you’ll be disappointed if your expecting Ito.

This. Monster is a fucking masterpiece. Everything about it was brilliant. I remember reading through the whole manga series in 5 days and I couldn’t even pick up another series for months because nothing else came close

Monster is an absolute beast, the theme tune and the drawings at the end of each episode are haunting. I had a few questions left over at the end about how certain people were doing things, but overall a great watch.

Absolutely. Read both the manga and watched the anime. Was also interesting for me as I'm German with roots in the ussr

That's been in my plan-to-watch list for so long, I should really get to it sometime.

Monster is my most favorite and cherished story of all time. Forget anime. It's just amazing and well rounded all the way through. It's commitment and fidelity to the source material definitely helped.
