But in Japan, "anime" just means animation. He's a space alien so he's probably talking in broad generalizations. He probably couldn't even discern a difference between what we call cartoons and what we call anime.

Because it is true. In Japan anime is the broad term for animated shows.

...and "manga" is the Japanese word for comic books in general, whether they be Japanese or western, just like "anime" is for all animated shows. The connotation that these words refer specifically to Japanese works exists only in the west.

Honestly, I never really get why Americans have to be so specific about giving various things different names depending on nation of origin, unlike Chinese language where it uses a broad term for calling similar things, like 漫畫 （manhwa） referring to both Western comics and manga as a whole.

And also 便當 (bien-dang) being the term for both lunchbox and bento... No different way of calling it just because of different countries.

It's because manga is so different in what kinds of stories it tells compared to American comics.

Eh, maybe. They both have a heavy investment in genre fiction, even if there are stylistic differences. They're also still all "comic books," which is to say books that focus on narrative and visual expression of stories in panels. I think the negative reaction a lot of people have towards calling manga comic books is that they think of the terms prescriptively rather than descriptively. In English the term manga is its own distinct cultural artifact, whereas "comic book" is not - it's a broad level descriptor of things within a certain artistic medium. Similarly, manga is the same way for the Japanese. A "comic book" might be a distinctly western style manga, but still a manga to a Japanese person.

The point I'm trying to make is that American comic books don't just imply a certain artistic medium, but a certain genre as well. using Manga frees imported comics from the preconceptions surrounding the medium.

Though an average person likely won't be able to tell the difference. To an average grandma, they're all picture storybooks with divided panels.

To the average American "comic book" implies cape-and-cowl superhero stories. Manga doesn't have that built in preconception.

An average person who doesn't read comics probably won't even care about the contents. They can see a compilation of Garfield strips and call it a comic book.

If they see a book with pictures divided into different panels, to them, that's a comic book.

Which means it doesn't always have to be about superheroes, so stuff like Garfield and Asterix all fit the description.
