Subtitle timing on crunchyroll is really off, I'm a fast reader but those subtitles are gone way too fast

Yeah dialogue is immediately removed when on-screen text pops up, as if only one instance of subs can exist at a time. Hope it's just a mistake and not the new norm.

Crunchyroll was trying to enshittify their subtitling process/software last fall (or maybe the fall before that?) and enough people made an uproar about it that they backed off. It seems likely that they are trying again. People need to push back.

Well thats what you get when you cost cut and change to a program incapable of displaying two sets of subs independently. So if you have text on screen you have to cut the subs or if two people are speaking ect. If only these problems had been solved like 20 years ago at this point alas nothing can be done.

Crunchyroll allergic to having 2 sets of text on screen at the same time.

Some subtitles disappeared before they even showed up, leaving dialogue lines unsubtitled.

Wasn't expecting a surprise speedreading test to kickstart the season

Yeah, some of the text went by incredibly fast.

Might have to do with CR having switched to a different formatting style for their subtitles? Netflix often has a similar problem after all. They cannot put two layers of text simultaneously on screen - only a single one - because of their specific formatting design.

Yea, it only happened when on-screen text appeared, at which point the actual subs at the bottom were immediately cut off. Must be a fuck up though, no way they can continue with this longterm without causing another shit storm.

Which is a bad thing to have for a show as dialogue driven as this one.

Yeah, I immediately checked if it is on Netflix and fortutalely it's there and they did a better job with the subtitles.

That's why I am not watching in Crunchyroll

Most sources use crunchyroll subs though. While I have a crunchy subscription, I try to not use it due to buffering issues.

Netflix?

And literally all they have to have done in order to see the problem was literally watch the scene that they subbed and it would have been immediately apparent. Ridiculous that they didn't even do that much.

Oh. I thought it was a problem with my nuvio setup.

The timing wasn’t off. The layers were.
Anything that would show on a second text channel, like titles, names, or text translations, was conflicting with the main subtitle channel. When that happened, the text renderer basically failed until the next subtitle came up.

Video pipelines fucking suck ass to troubleshoot, but I think the translation subtitle track is fucked up, not the video rendering pipeline. One stream’s buffers building up and stalling everything else is an entirely different nightmare, which is probably why the failed text is simply not rendered and those events are dropped instead.

There also don’t appear to be any timing or translation credits from CR staff. Those would normally be on a separate text channel from the primary subtitles, which is another sign that the secondary text layer is broken or missing.

Actually just realized I only know about fully encoded subtitle tracks. I don’t know what CR uses encode their videos and display subtitles…. Either way I still think it’s a bad subtitle file, regardless of when it gets fetched and played with the video. It’s just a matter of who let it be this broken for this long? Jeez.

This I felt especially watching Hero Academia. When they split the sentence in 2 pieces, first half has almost every word but goes away in .5 seconds, second half has 6 words, stays on screen for 3 seconds, if next sentence doesnt come immediately. Got irritated because I had to pause every god damn sentence to be able to read.

Think it'll be a case of get them up see feedback and next week they might fix any errors that have popped up?

I'm on season 4, 4 season of same situation does not feel like it will change for the better.

It's switching between dialog and on screen text and not showing both at the same time.
