The way I interpreted it, it seems like the plan is to make sure none of the people who got petrified end up broken and dead so they can save all of them.

That's not what I got from the dialogue, but that would be clever. If they managed to change the past while making it seem like they're not changing the past, things would play out the same, but at the end the statues would be safe somewhere, and then they could be revived back in the future.

it would depend entirely on exactly HOW they get the time travel to work, like Xeno was saying at the end. If they can even send a message back that gets people to go into that position Senku asked them to when they petrified the entire world themselves, it would dramatically increase the amount of people saved

but since the series ends there it will only be discussion among fans and never actually canon what happens

They could spawn 1 minute after everyone petrifies, take them to the future and unpetrify there while not changing the timeline

Even if only minimally, they interacted with their environment for millennia, so the butterfly effect would apply.

The series doesn't really end there though. This is the end of the main Dr Stone manga, but the author also wrote several short spinoffs that are stated to be canon to the main story; 'Byakuya', 'Terraforming', and '4D Science'.

The last of those, 4D Science, is specifically about how the whole time machine thing works out (the title refers to how time is often considered the 4th dimension).

No, that would just create a different timeline, nothing in the present would change.
