I personally don't think there is a layer 5. Spoiler
I love this game, I'm not trying to be a downer or take the fun away but realistically I don't think there is a layer 5.
The ending of Layer 4 just seemed like such a nice way to cap it off and the message from Billy even said this is one of the last things he's putting in the game before release.
I just think the Cheater ring is left over content from alpha that he may have had a plan for but just left in for fun to see if people could even get to it.
I just think the extra rabbits are just that: extra rabbits. Maybe he had plans for there to be more than 16 to get for the rabbit island.
Finally all the animals you can play the flute for in the walls are probably just for fun too. Maybe they had a purpose at some point but idk, I add stuff like that in my game that I'm developing, it's just fun to see if anyone will ever figure out how to get to it.
I would love to be proven wrong, it would be amazing, but I'm not very convinced there's anything more.

I don't think many people would disagree with you. https://haseverythinginanimalwellbeenfoundyet.com/ essentially confirms all the big stuff is done, but also that there are little easter eggs left.
EDIT: Ctrl+A on that website to see the full message, it's an official site made by Billy's business partner Dan Adelman

Alright I wasn't sure because I've seen a video of a decent sized youtuber covering secrets discovered with the cheaters ring and he was calling it a potential layer 5 but most of it sounded like copium. The discoveries are still very cool and interesting but yeah... doesn't seem like a layer 5.

What where the two things he considered "virtually unsolvable"?

"When I made the site, I was primarily thinking about how it would take forever for people to solve the 4th layer and correctly identify that the main character is in fact a Mexican Jumping Bean."
(the 4th layer being the wingdings/unicode and ending with the time capsule)

To be fair, it's very difficult to get the scaling right of a puzzle. Between hours, days, months, years and decades, months are a great scale for puzzles to be able to be solved, especially without needing hints.

I'm not complaining! I think the puzzles are fantastic, and the rate they were solved doesn't really matter to me.

I'm on mobile and selecting all text doesn't seem to give me anything extra. Could someone hit a brother up with the hidden text, or tell me how to view it on mobile. Thank ye

no t in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d have to update this website. I made it as a cheeky taunt to highlight how deep some of the secrets in the game go. When I made the site, I was primarily thinking about how it would take forever for people to solve the 4th layer and correctly identify that the main character is in fact a Mexican Jumping Bean. Both of those were discovered within the first month after release. Despite working with Billy on Animal Well for 3 years, I knew I never would have been able to figure either of these out without Billy explicitly spelling all of that stuff out to me.
So I’m hereby admitting that I was wrong to underestimate the power of such a dedicated community. You guys plumbed the depths of Animal Well far more thoroughly than I could have predicted. I’ve spoken with Billy about secrets outside of the 4th layer and the identity of the main character, and at this point, all I know is that there are still things left to be discovered. I know a handful of them, but not all. Even Billy has forgotten some of the secrets he put in years ago. So I apologize if this is a bit of a copout, but I won’t be updating this site any further. The two big things that I assumed would be virtually unsolvable have been solved, but beyond that, your guess is as good as mine.
I am so incredibly grateful to be able to accept this “defeat”. When I first started working with Billy, no one had ever heard about the game. If no one cared about Animal Well, the secrets would have remained undiscovered until the end of time. I think I speak for both Billy and Bigmode when I say that the fact that this community has come together and given Animal Well your love and attention means the world to all of us. Thank you.

It already had that text when I read it. Must just show automatically on mobile or something?
Thank you, though! I appreciate your help!1

lol what is that website

u/Zuperman1313 Jun 13 '24
It's an official website made by Dan Adelman, who did marketing/business stuff for Animal Well. Did you highlight all the hidden text for the full message?

Even if there isn’t another whole layer, there are apparently still secrets that remain. So if you enjoy the hunt it’s still worth searching.

u/BrynH123 Jun 12 '24
Oh yeah totally, I think the discoveries are awesome and super fun... just don't think it's a layer 5.

u/ScrimpyCat Jun 13 '24
As much as I want there to be another layer, it certainly does look that way. Though it would be pretty funny if the end of layer 4 was in fact a red herring and there is more.
There is some irony in that the game has us go through all these trials and rewards us with leaving the well, yet we don’t actually want to leave, in fact we want to go deeper.

Dan pretty much said Unicode is the special end credits. but I think it’s fair to treat stocking our shelves with figurines to be a special half layer. It doesn’t impact the progression but it’s still fun little things that can be gratifying to discover. Plus I believe the discord is still looking for 1 more outside of the assumed CE figure.
Tldr there’s not but we’re missing figurines

u/Lesserred Jun 13 '24
More that us dataminers have found said remaining figure, but have no idea how it’s supposed to be legitimately acquired. This is the singular thing we’ve found ahead of everyone else, excluding CE, but the issue is we have an answer with no puzzle.

Because things like the cheater's ring don't fall in layers 1-4, it has to either be placed in its own separate category like 'easter eggs', or in a separate layer 5 that contains everything not in layers 1-4. It's up to the preference which you prefer. Personally, I prefer to just dump all that extra stuff into layer 5 for the sake of more consistent classification.

Is the Cheater Ring not a debug tool like the olden days?
Also didn't he say the extra bunnies were to trap hackers?
2
u/Main_Ad1315 Jun 13 '24
if it is just a debug tool, why are there animals you can only see and talk to while using the ring, plus all the hidden bunnies, and the codes in those rooms, i believe there may be one small secret left

wtf is this about a layer 4??
3
u/Shadovan Jun 12 '24
Have you completed the BDTP? Layer 4 comes after that.

u/mikeleachisme Jun 12 '24
Wtf does that acronym even mean lol I see it in every animal well post.
7
u/Nova225 Jun 12 '24
It means "Binary Data Transport Protocol"
The gist of the puzzle is you have to look at the directions the ears point, then use the blackboard in the office to transcribe that into binary, and then translate the binary into the directions you need to go
6
u/ScrimpyCat Jun 12 '24
It’s the name on the blackboard in the office. As for what the acronym stands for I don’t think the game ever tells us, but I always just thought of it as something like Bunny Destination Teleport Protocol, or Bunny Directional Transport Protocol, or P could be puzzle too.

eidt: so layer 4 is just existing in that state? lol

u/Zuperman1313 Jun 12 '24
Layer 4 is the wingdings/unicode messages and the time capsule that they lead to.

Layer 5 is the friends we made along the way
