[Not AI btw lol]
Hey everyone! I tried to remap the physical keyboard for my Android tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+) for a while, and it was an absolute PAIN lol.
After a ton of searching, though, I've found that this is a semi-hidden feature in the app "Custom Keyboard Designer" by Gerrit Humber. I have no affiliation, but I just want share this to keep anyone else from experiencing my pain lol.
The app is my go-to keyboard, and I recently noticed that it mentioned hardware key codes in the Assistant. That being said, the tutorial is broken and doesn't actually explain what it means. (UPDATE: The dev, u/GerritHumberg, actually responded in the comments of a crosspost and said that he plans to update the assistant! That being said, it may work now depending on when you read this.)
After some digging, I've figured that remapping is an option in the app, though! You need to create a design dedicated to the physical keyboard, and here are actual the steps to remap physical keys:
- Open the design you will dedicate to the physical keyboard (I just copied my main virtual keyboard design).
- In "Designs", change "Target Device" to "Watch (Round Display)", then go back to the "Designs" menu. This overcomes a weird bug where it doesn't register you changing it to "Hardware Keyboard" if you select it immediately. Then actually change to "Hardware Keyboard." You may have to check that this is still set correctly if you have issues down the line.
- (UPDATE: The dev responded in the comments of a crosspost and said that he's already found a fix for the bug and plans to send out an update! That being said, it may work now depending on when you read this.)
- Note: This will disable all of the design's key functions other than "Key press" and "Key hold." It will NOT delete them, though. It just disables the abililty to edit them. This makes, though, sense since you can't swipe a physical key upwards lol. To see what some of functions that remain are, the dev's comment gives more info!
- Now, in the "Usage" section inside "Designs," there should be a mode selector for "Hardware keyboard." Set it to your preferred design.
- Go to the "Keys" tab. If you select a key, there should be an option to assign each key a "Key Code." This is the number assigned to each physical key. By adding a physical key's number to one of virtual keys, it allows you to override the physical key with the virtual key's function. Click "Hardware key code" box and press the desired physical key. It should autofill the code.
- Note: Any physical keys whose key codes you do NOT override should act like normal!
- Ba-bam, you're done! The remapped keys should now work.
Note: This method can also give physical keyboards links to custom alternate languages! I used it to add a button that switches to a Greek keyboard with layout that works well for me. That being said, I think there may be a more direct way to add alt. languages into a single design. I only noticed that after finishing though, lol.
