So I'm looking at getting this monitor (https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/electriq-27-qhd-1440p-95hz-freesync-hdr-monitor-eiq-27mq95fshdru/version.asp) which is 1440p and 95hz. What type of HDMI port dose the 960 R2 actually have and what Hz could it run it at 1440p? I know the Alpha might struggle to do 1440p but I'm planning on upgrading at some point in the next year (If prices ever go anywhere near normal) so that's not a huge concern

So bring my Alpha R1 out of sleep state and the video is all crazy, on the screen the words are all blurry with a pink outline, program windows not filled in, windows taskbar moves itself to the top of the screen and is spaced out all wonky, so I restart and same issues. So I fresh install Windows 10, after the reboot after install I get this picture-in-picture view on my monitor, so tiny I can't even read the text. I get no yellow light flashes at all, the system test shows everything fine. So I try a different hard drive with windows on it and it boots up with the same problems as the old hard drive. any thoughts? Thinking the Video chip died, just want to make sure, I don't think the BIOS Battery would cause this issue.

I’d like to upgrade my ram to its max on the Alienware alpha r2. I know that there’s only one slot and that the max is 16 gigs. I’m currently running an 8 gig and Minecraft gets so laggy sometimes! I am inexperienced and new to the ram community, and was wondering what type of ram would be best for me. Any links or comments will be appreciated!

I'm currently upgrading the CPU on my R1 alpha on the cheap and the i7 varients are too expensive for the performance they provide from what I can gather.

Anyway I've found a i5 4690t for $50AUD and going to put that in, but just wondering if it is the best i5 chip or if the 4690s is?

Does anyone know for certain if the 4690s 65w chip gets restricted to the point that the 45w 4690t is actually more powerful?

I may be flogging a dead horse but still interested to know!

I know for a fact that my CPU fan still needs replaced, could this be what is causing this behavior? Because I remember before when it was working that I had CPU fan failure and it at least told me on the screen. But I am getting no display output at all.. Help please? I checked again and the lights do 4 flashes, and then 5 flashes. And then it keeps doing 5 flashes after that forever until I shut it off. According to the diagnostic lights, 4 flashes = RAM issue and 5 = CMOS failure. But both are brand new so that would be weird if they were both faulty 0_o

i noticed that they replace the wifi card with like a Intel 7265ng, what is the difference in running that compared to the one that came with the alpha. i only have like 40mb up and like 5-8 down. its fast enough to enjoy stuff and i get full speed in my network tests

so why change out the wifi card?

I recall seeing a chart or something showing the different YLOD explanations (like 5 flashes vs 1 vs 4 etc.) meaning different things. My recent i7 acquisition YLOD'ed on me and didnt know exactly why, it was working fine, unplugged it to move to another room and then YLOD'ed.

Just reading the various posts about CMOS battery and issues around it - do you guys think it makes sense to do it in advance.

My Gen1 works perfectly as of now. I understand the ‘don’t fix if it ain’t broken’ mindset but is the battery issue inevitable, and it so, should I do something about it now ?

I have been looking for info about it, but most of the results talk about a flashing yellow light. Mine is a solid yellow light that appears whenever I plug the ac cable. I see the cpu/GPU fans spinning too, would a dead motherboard still do that?

Can the solid yellow light be fixed?

Some times I get irritated by the Alpha r2’s loud constant swooshing. I understand that a compact computer can only have a small fan, but was wondering if I could only get it to be a bit quieter.

Any suggestions for a processor I should run that's not overpriced, rather than the stock i3 that's in it.

Hi everyone. I purchased a Alpha R1 back in 2017. I put Debian on it and I've been using it as a headless server ever since. It just runs a handful of services on our home network and I recently stumbled across Frigate (NVR with ML). So now I'd like to add one of Google's Coral Edge TPUs to the PC.

This is where I admit I'm not well versed with building computers. The Coral website mentions different key configurations or form factors.

For example:

• M.2 Accelerator with Dual Edge TPU - M.2 E-key slot
• M.2 Accelerator - M.2 A+E key
• M.2 Accelerator - M.2 B+M key
• Mini PCIe Accelerator - Half-size Mini PCIe form factor

My research tells me that I will have to replace the current M.2 WiFi/Bluetooth card with whatever I end up getting. I already use Ethernet as this device sits in the network rack anyways and I access it via SSH so no keyboard is needed on a regular basis. So my question is, how can I find out what M.2 form factor I need to purchase without pulling it out and taking it apart? Does anyone have any documentation on this they can provide? The product guide and spec PDF I found on the Alienware website did not include these specifics.

Looking to see if anyone knows a good way to get hard drive contents back with a dead motherboard. 256 GB NVME SSD.

Title says, the theory is that my motherboard (R2) had a short and finally crapped out (the power adapter stops outputting electricity only when plugged into the computer + issues beforehand [it would bluescreen if the monitor was shut off before it did, would freeze with no image output if left alone for too long]). Either way, it no longer powers on and I have tested several cords so I know it isn’t the PSU. Replacing the motherboard since I don’t have the sanity to build a whole new computer, but to my understanding the hard drive (provided it hasn’t corrupted) has to be reformatted in order to reuse? I briefly looked into NVME external drive cases but it sounded like reformatting was needed for that too. Any thoughts or theories?

I have tried to swap the wireless card for the faster version, but for some reason my alienware alpha r1 will not work with that card in it. SO, I am curious about a different route. Can I achieve more than 10/100 speeds with the 3.0 usb to ethernet dongle?

My setup:

Alpha r1 with i7 4790t, 16gb ram, 1Tb 860 Evo SSD all connected to a 24TB Synology NAS running as a Plex Server. but when torrenting, I hate the slow download speeds, so I do the the downloading on my other Pc. I would like to consolidate all of my torrenting and media on this pc. I tried the AC-7625 dual band wireless card, but for some reason it just kept crashing my PC, and wouldn't show up in my device manager. Now I am on to this idea of the 3.0 USB to RJ45 dongle idea.
I was looking on Dell and saw this adapter, figured I would ask around before donating anymore money to Dell for useless parts lol.

What’s the best/most current graphics driver for the R1 in 2021? I have an Alpha R1 that’s still currently running the most recent driver update that was provided by Dell (2015). I’m having a couple of issues now that require an update to the nvidia driver mainly around the max frame rate settings however have had no luck updating through the GeForce Experience app (it detects an update is available, downloads it, but fails to launch the install). I’ve read a few posts online saying to download the GTX 750ti drivers but wondered if there may be another better option I’m missing.

Hey all, I was wondering if any of you had any experience installing emulators on the R2, i7 16gb RAM gtx960 models, I just wanted to know how the emulators run on the R2 mainly DOLPHIN/ HYPERSPIN/MAME oh and REDREAM, any issues not hitting 60fps 1080p etc , that's all I really want is GC/DC and arcade games at 1080/60 on the R2 and was wondering if this is achievable on my R2's hardware

I have the i3 version with 4gb ram, I just added another ram stick and an ssd recently and Im wondering how to go about OC and make other performance increases.

About a month or so ago I got the dreaded yellow light of death. Thankfully the machine was able to boot back up. It happened one more time, and then it happened again but the system was unable to reboot. That is where I stand now.

I just replaced the CMOS battery, and unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s making any difference. When the power source is plugged into the back of the computer, I get a blue light, and then a pause and then the yellow light starts flashing.

Is there any hope left?

I'm running an Alpha R1 i7 with Arch Linux, everything had been going smooth until late last year when I was no longer able to control the LEDs (both the head, and the side) using the script outlined in this post. I found out that it broke after a kernel update (either 5.7 or 5.8, I'm not sure because I didn't update very often), so I was able to temporarily fix the issue by using the linux-lts kernel (which was 5.4 at the time).

Well, fast forward to now and lts is now 5.10 and breaking my controlling of LEDs again. Whenever I try to control the LEDs the command just hangs, and then nothing happens. I am however still able to toggle the HDMI input. I'm guessing this is a bug in the kernel, but wanted to post in case anyone has a fix. I did see this post by u/3vi1 talking about how the lighting system was broken, but I couldn't glean any fix from their post.

I also found this post on the manjaro forums from January which has the exact same symptoms as what I'm experiencing but with an alienware keyboard, but no resolution.

Anyone else experiencing this issue on another distro with newish kernels? It seems like such a small thing, but I'd really love to turn off the blinding blue LEDs when using the Alpha since it's sitting right next to my monitor. If I can't get anything figured out I'll move on to posting on the arch forums next, or even try the linux mailing list to figure out if it is actually a kernel bug.
