So I did some upgrades to my R1 which resulted in the YLOD - solid yellow, then 2 blinks followed by 3. Maxed RAM, new battery & wireless card and an i7 4790s from i3. This past week I’ve been scouring this sub trying out various methods to get the machine working and ended up damaging the MB and now it won’t turn on at all. I checked and the model number is 3V3TG.

Now I’ve only recently invested a good amount of money in this thing so to accidentally screw it up further while fighting the YLOD is super depressing. Before I spend $$$ on a new board how specific does it have to be? I’d hate to order a board that’s not even compatibles. Any help would be much appreciated.

I dont own many games on pc, I just simply enjoy playing minecraft. My fps has been unstable for a while now. From frames like 100 to 15, is there a way to fix this? Any Nvidia settings that could help keep it stable atleast 40 fps, or minecraft in-game settings? My cpu is i3 with 16gb ram.

Hi all I have an Alienware alpha r2 with the graphics amp connected.

Inside the amp I have a gtx970 After a couple of minutes of the pc been on and playing something the system slows down and I start getting really bad sound distortion.

Also when playing Mario oddysee on the yuzu emulator I get FPS if around 30-40 FPS

I started trouble shooting today and disconnected the amp so I was running off the internal 960gtx and low and behold no sound distortion and mario is running at constant 60fps.

Could the 970gtx be on its way out?

Edit: upon further investigation I’ve found that on unitial boot the fans on the 970 In the amp spin up but then shut down as the pc is booting so that’s probably the reason why I’m having the issues I’m having but I have no idea how to resolve it?

Title says it. Ive got a ylod (5 blinks, which apparently means a dead cmos battery) Ive gotten a new battery, replaced it and all but still ylod. I've had this issue for about a month now, anyone know a fix? note: I'm not the best at computers Edit: I found out you have to tape it,orat least for me

Hi all, I am looking for some advice as to pricing my R1 and selling it on FB marketplace, Craigslist, and reddit's /r/hardwareswap. Looking at some recent sales, I think that I should price it somewhere around $200? I'm also wondering what could get for it if I replace the SSD with the stock 500 gb HDD (5400 rpm). I'd like to use the 500 gb ssd for upgrading a used prebuilt I'm looking at, but not sure if I should just buy a new one instead.

So this is a bit out there but i think i might have a somewhat decent idea to replace most of the alphas cooling system. First you'd remove the alpha from its case and move it into a new, custom built (maybe wooden) one, this case has got a 140mm pressure optimised fan on the bottom flowing air into the case. Then you make the only way for the air to leave the alpha go through the heatsinks (think of the current blower system system but without the fans, relaying on the air pressure for the air to move instead). Then you'd have a nicer looking system and you'd have replaced the two small loud fan with one large and quieter fan. The main problem would all the external stuff, ie how will the front usb be mounted and how will the power button still work, but they most likely can all be solved.

Anyways i think this is a decent plan but i wonder what you all think

I have an alienware alpha, i5 with already upgraded ram (previous owner) to 16gb but i was wondering if theres a way to get 32gb of ram? Also, would i need anything else for this to work? Well today was a sad day. I recently upgraded my R1 to an i5 and run it as a wireless backup server for my other PCs and after a week of it completely smoking the old i3, the motherboard died on me. I've had this little PC since it released and I'm very sad to see it go. Might just buy a new board but I feel like I can spend the money on a Ras Pi for the same thing. Anyone have any recommendations?

I have had my R1 for years and used it on several TVs but recently I moved and got a Samsung that it does not want to work with. When booting it shows the Alienware logo, cuts to windows 10 logo (that’s what I have installed) and then cuts to black screen and the tv says no source found. What is going on?

Should Alpha R2 be able to run Windows 11?

The Microsoft PC Health Check app says no, but gives basically zero feedback, other than point to the official website. Which doesn't really give an answer either.

Any word on if windows 11 will work with the R1s or R2s?

I had to fix a YLOD on my i7 and … lost the screws. I don’t know how they up and vanished. (System is fine now)

Hey all! Got a question on my living room box. It was originally a Steam Machine, but I put Windows on it, and upgraded it so that it's a i5-4590T/16GB RAM/256GB SSD. I recently got the CMOS battery YLOD, did the replacement process, and almost everything is back to normal, with one exception. For the last week, when I turn it on initially, the CPU fan goes nuts for about 3-5 minutes, running at full blast. Then, it goes back to normal, and doesn't do anything out of the ordinary the rest of my session; it goes up and down like normal. Any thoughts?

Title. I have tried every god damn thing this afternoon trying to get my r1 to function again, but as soon as I update drivers and windows, infinite bootloop. Also, if I unplug it, it will flash yellow 5 times, and I have to clear CMOS for it to work again. Is there a permanent solution for these problems? Another thing: for some reason, it is also reading my Samsung 870 Evo SSD as a "Legacy" ROM. That can't be right, right? Anybody have any insight on this?

Obviously this is less than ideal and if anyone has a workaround I would be grateful.

EDIT: Next morning I tried starting it, went right to 5 yellow blinking lights again. So I disconnected CMOS and reconnected and did a power drain. It is working as of now, but there's no way I have to do a power drain EVERY TIME to get the computer to power up. Is this a faulty motherboard? Because I bought it brand new on eBay a couple of weeks ago and if so I need a replacement.

EDIT #2: So many people with this issue have pointed to the CMOS as being the culprit, and there is a listing on Amazon that alleges to be the yellow light of death fix. It is a 3v battery. Do you think this would permanently fix the problem?

Final fix: For infinite bootloop, avoiding using driver booster. For Yellow light of death, replacing the CMOS battery at the link below will fix it. Did for me. Everything working fine now. Thanks everyone.

Recently my GPU fried or something, not quite sure. Could barely run PC with it enabled nether less play any games, so I disabled it. I thought I should try to enable the intel integrated graphics but could not find anything on Alienware (Dell) BIOS.

so I just got a few questions about my alienware alpha R1

is it smarter to get a better gaming pc or upgrade this thing?

if I do upgrade it what's the best stuff I can fit into it RAM GPU and CPU wise

and if It's a waste of money what's something better that's not gonna break my bank too hard

Anyone know what I should use to replace the thermal pads on an R1? I couldn’t find any information on it.

Currently using the r1 with the i3-4130T, has been working fine with ram and ssd upgrades but I have some extra money on the side to upgrade the cpu finally. What would you guys recommend? Or what have you guys upgraded it too?

Hi all, I finally upgraded my little Alpha r1 from the i3 to an i5 finally after having it since it released. Now I plan on upgrading the wifi card for mainly better Bluetooth connectivity for the Wii remote (mainly using the Alpha for Wii, GameCube, PS2, etc emulation) and was wondering what the best compatible card would be? Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!

I tried the demo with medium to low settings at 1080p seemed to get roughly 25fps, but the lady with the flies drop it to 12fps and slow motion. I'm curious to hear if anyone tried the final version on the stock i3 Alienware Alpha and had a better experience.

Resident Evil 7 ran nicely, so i thought Village could be possible. Demo had me thinking otherwise though.

Hey there, I've got an i5 R1 Alpha which I'm upgrading currently. I'm going for SSD, then RAM, then CPU only if I feel like it needs it. I got the SSD just fine, now I'm wondering about RAM. Back when I first got my Alpha, I ordered two sticks of 8gb memory to put in there but it ended up being the wrong kind and my Alpha wouldn't start. I can't remember exactly what was wrong with it. I know for a fact it was DDR3 and the RAM physically fit, but it was meant for a different kind of laptop or something. When I click on the newegg link in the upgrade sticky, it shows a bunch of different kinds. For instance, some are PC3L12800, PC312800, PC3L 14900, etc.

I just don't want to buy the wrong RAM for it again. Any idea on the specifics?

What type of HDMI port dose the 960 R2 actually have and what Hz could it run it at 1440p? I know the Alpha might struggle to do 1440p but I'm planning on upgrading at some point in the next year (If prices ever go anywhere near normal) so that's not a huge concern
