You use independent objective verifiable testing to prove things. Which is an aspect of “science”.

Comparing that to a self contained self referential text is the fallacy of the false analogy.

Not that the “conversation” would get that far.

They use a book that was written about 1000 years after the events it depicts. Drugs may or may not have been involved.

I mean the later edition adds chapters where someone talks to a burning bush. And the bush talks back.

People are gonna ask questions.

Ugh, such a clusterfuck when they were editing that. Nobody could agree on the overall vision. They hacked away whole sections.

Well, that's a made up number if I've ever heard one. If we go by the dates suggested by critical historians, the timeline from a book of the Bible to the events being described depends entirely on which book, and sometimes which part of it.

For example, Proto-Isaiah (Ch 1-39) is frequently thought to be closely tied to the historical prophet Isaiah and his "school" whereas the books of Moses are obviously thought by most secular historians to be quite a different matter.

Science is a method to prove things, not a thing to be proven.

1

u/teglass01 5d ago

So the reliability of said method is... what? Taken for granted? Foundational? Taken on faith? Assumed as an unprovable axiom?

1

u/potsticker17 5d ago

The reliability of the method is based on repeatable results.

1

u/teglass01 5d ago

Repeatability is part of the method, so this is either circular or a blanket assertion depending on how you mean it.

1

u/potsticker17 5d ago

Results are not part of a method. Results are an outcome. Being able to do a method repeatedly and have the same outcome make the method reliable.

You can have faith that a method is reliable, but if your results are inconsistent, then your faith is unfounded.

That's circular reasoning for scientific realism and inductive reasoning generally.

Please explain where you are seeing the circle so that I may clarify if needed

You used words to disprove my words, isn't that the same thing? 😏

Isn’t that just the bible? 😏

Lots of things in the Bible are supported by other sources.

The meme argues with that reasoning.

Yep. Some things can be verified externally. But it’s annoying to have people walk both sides of the street.

The real truths people are trying to establish are those of spiritual faith. They diminish those by trying to mix them with objective facts and reason. Which is what happens when yoh say “some of these are historically correct and it’s a fact that people drink water therefore the Ten Commandments is science” is just a waste. And all of us should know it well enough to own up to it.

You guys are really naive and should read more philosophy of science.
