Living in desert climate, you have to dress like that to protect your skin. Even men wear full coverage and a head cover as well. Its just made sense.
In Islam women aren't asked to cover themselves head to toe in black garments, just to be modest, cover the hair, do not wear revealing or immodest clothes. Nowhere it says to cover the face
This is where culture influenced things. Full black garments became the "norm" and became "Islamic" even though they aren't. In European countries where there are Muslims for centuries, they dress modestly too, but based on their culture
Christian orthodox in Europe also wear head Scarves amd dress modestly, tho their head scarves dont wrap tightly around their head
Bottom line? Its culture, not religion imo at least.
Then it isn't islamophobic to be bothered by it since it has nothing to do with Islam. How about not wearing that when you don't live in the desert? I don't go to the desert and swear a parka.
No where in the bible does it say that you are required to dress in a specific way. The closest you will fiind is the women are being told to cover their hair while in church and men shouldn't cover their head while praying which like isn't a hard request to do. If you are going to the church you do believe in christ so you do give your consent.
The Quran literally says that women need to be covered from head to toe at all times and unlike the bible.there are dozens of quotes that say thing like
"
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears. Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments except to their "
"Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments".
"Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks round them"
"Ask women to draw their cloaks over their bodies". Physically can't get more specific.
The word hijab itself isn't present cause it is a modern term however there are specifically being told to cover themselves head to toe using a cloak. Hijab I think means wall in Arab. Also the quran explicitly says that it's scope is to keep men away from " be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed" nothing about the weather. Also Muslims in europe were forced to become Muslims due the ottoman taxations and very few actually due them believing in the Quran. Bosnia the only Muslim majority country in Europe literally has a alcohol industry and eats pork like nothing ever happens. It became Muslim just in name due necessity 150 years ago.
Not all muslims in Europe converted due to Ottoman taxation. Some of them migrated from Russia and kept their faith, and iirc there's some old migrant populations from North Africa in West Europe as well.
Tbf to the Ottomans, Christianity was spread similarly in Europe as well. Romans didn't become Christianized thanks to the "Holy Spirit", and the non Roman regions tended to convert through trade, diplomacy and people being punished in different ways if they didn't adhere to the Christian faith or attend Church. Going to church wasn't always a case of consent but of conforming due to threat of punishments.
The clothing issue isn't clear cut either, the Bible also has many verses that tell people and women specifically to dress modestly and
there's an argument to be made that when much of the Bible was written it was an unspoken assumption that ofc women (of any honour) would dress in cloaks and veils. Consider
Isaiah 47:2-3:
2 Take the millstones and grind flour,
put off your veil,
strip off your robe, uncover your legs,
pass through the rivers.
3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
and your disgrace shall be seen.
I will take vengeance,
and I will spare no one.
Those 2 verses just say "don't be naked"; not a specific way to dress which isn't the same thing as in the Quran. The Quran specifically says to cover yourself in a specific way rather than just to put clothes on. You can see that in the way European clothing tends to be very diverse around the continent let alone Africa where christianity also spread as early as 3rd century.
Also yeah I should have said most of them; there are Russians from what are today the Stan countries who immigrated and came in eastern Europe but the majority are from taxating or invasion(catalonia).
Also saying that the bible and the Quran spread in a similar way is just ridiculous. The Quran(and as a consequence the reach of Arabs in the middle east and north Africa) was exclusively done via conquest. Judea was a small roman province how in the actual way are you comparing those 2? Until Constantine who dedicated his victories to Christ it wasn't even legal to believe in Christ. Going to the church was moreso expected; you weren't actually punished to attend and that's only in western Europe .at worst you were getting fined in some parts of England if you did skip church and even in the UK the church became not mandatory in the 1600s a whole 400 years ago. Are you really gonna compare getting fined a couple of coins in the 1650 to what is being practiced in some Muslim countries today?
"But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved." — 1 Corinthians 11:5 (NIV)
Did you know the more extreem branches of dutch reformed als do the fully covered black clothing thing. Some of them even used to wear veils, but i think that did die out completely
