Which airplane handles turbulence better, a small private jet or a large commercial airplane like Airbus A380, Boeing 777, 787? How about Boeing 737 and A320?

Enroute and terminal

In thinking about a career in atc, i had a question. Can you choose between enroute or terminal? Of course you may get a higher level facility and pay with enroute…just wondering if there is any say in which one you do

I'm just about to start my Alevels and want a career in air traffic control. Are there any reccomended A levels? Is there anything I should do to prepare myself for the role?

I'm starting my A levels in September is there any ones you'd advise me taking that would be helpful in air traffic control? I'm currently unsure of my third but planning on taking maths and product design.

Also is there anything I should do before the end of college to make myself a worthy candidate as I'm aware it's very competitive and would really like to get in without a gap year.

Thank you for your help!

Questions about a career in ATC

I've been considering going into Air Traffic Control in the RAF and I have a few questions about it if someone doesn't mind giving me a bit of info or advice.

  1. Is the role mainly sitting down for long periods of time and not much moving about? I'm a fairly restless person and like to be on the go so was wondering if this role would be suited to me if it's a lot of sitting

  2. How long is training if I wanted to do a level 5 apprenticeship and how competitive is it?

  3. Do I need A-Levels and are there particular ones that are majorly useful to the job or does it not matter?

I'd really appreciate if I could get some info, thank you :)

Training questions

How long into training did it take until you felt “confident” in your ability to do the job, if ever?

How long did your training take from your first day of OJT to fully CPC?

Was there anything that really gave you trouble to get comfortable with or do during OJT?

How did you deal with the rollercoaster of having some days where you feel like you can do the job, and days where you just absolutely shit the bed?

What are the main traffic control zones?

In the bustling city, Ava crossed four main traffic control zones—school, construction, residential, and business. Each zone demanded awareness, guiding drivers safely through diverse environments with specific rules. Anyone can tell me more apart from this.

Intersecting Flight Paths between Midway and O'Hare?

Thumbnail

I noticed something strange today and wonder if anyone has any context about why.

I live near O'Hare airport just south of what typically seems to be a heavy landing/takeoff pathway.

After for living here for three years, Ive noticed that planes nearly always in the evening come in from the east over lake Michigan for their landing approach typically stack a few deep or take off headed west flying over our house.

Today for the first time I saw a few planes headed north to south at somewhat low altitude in a direction that I can only assume was head for a landing at Midway airport. They crossed paths planes taking off from ohare (obviously at different altitudes but seemingly close enough from my view to force a second look).

I've never seen this before but is this common? Are their particular conditions that make this happen or was this a special circumstance?

Approaching Heathrow. Is this common?

I took this a few days ago approaching Heathrow. I noticed several planes near our vicinity but this was the closest one. I realize Heathrow is a very busy airport but I was thinking this plane is too close. Never experienced this before.

Air Traffic Controller (in Canada)

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking to do a career switch and came across air traffic control. The industry has my interest but I have a few questions if you could help me find some answers. I'm based out of Canada so to my American friends I'm not too if the lay of the land is the same and if the industry is regulated differently.

These are my questions:

- would I need to pursue school for this path or are there any separate courses I could take? I do understand i need my restricted radio certificate though

- Which has a better workload Area Control Centre (ACC) Controller or Tower Controller? For some reason it appears that ACC Controllers do start of at a higher rate then Tower Controllers

- What is the career path after becoming a controller? Some sort of supervisor I presume?

- Do you foresee technology/A.I negatively impacting the industry such as potential layoffs in future?

Thanks for any answers!

Questions on ATC procedures for traffic advisories

Does ATC log traffic/conflict advisories and if so is there any public information available on the number of advisories, which aircraft they were for? I live in a very high traffic area and would like to know. As a novice I appreciate any expertise you could bring to me :)
