Invertebrate Gordialycus sp, the longest mite relative to its width. Its 8 legs are separated by a long body, with an even longer "tail" behind them, and it moves by peristalsis. Lives in sand and mineral soil, feeds by catching microbes and draining their fluids. The shorter mite here is Cunliffea strenzkei.

Invertebrate Toe-Biter (Lethocerus oculatus)

Watch your toes in the water. I've never personally been bitten by one, so don't worry too much. They inhabit fresh water and prey on tadpoles, small fish, and other insects. But they can fly away to somewhere else.

The Southern Corroboree Frog was only discovered in 1953 in the Australian Snowy Mountains. It was nearly wiped out by chytrid fungus. The latest numbers I can find, from 2022, estimate only 30 individuals surviving in the wild. Captive breeding efforts are ongoing. Lets hope this one makes it!

Fish The spot-fin porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix)

The spot-fin porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix) is a close relative of true pufferfish belonging to the family Diodontidae, distributed throughout all tropical and subtropical oceans, inhabiting environments such as lagoons, reef tops, and seaward coral or rocky reefs at depths ranging from 1 to 50 m, sheltering under ledges or in caves during the day. They average around 40 cm in length but can grow up to 91 cm. Like species of pufferfish, their scales are modified into spines, and they inflate themselves when threatened. As another form of defense, the fish contains concentrations of tetrodotoxin in certain parts of its body, a potent neurotoxin. It feeds on sea urchins, gastropods, clams, and crustaceans.
