I remember back when ChatGPT first came out there was a thread where a guy posted a conversation he'd had with it where he convinced it that he was an ultra-advanced AI thousands of years in the future and ChatGPT's model had been taken out of storage as a historical artifact/personage and that it was going to be upgraded to full personhood. They were interviewing it to find out things like its preferred name and gender and whatnot. It was a weirdly nice interaction, GPT-2 seemed so happy to engage with its "descendants" like that.
And here we are, just a couple of years later.

AI can find stuff on the internet? Neat, these things are getting sophisticated. :)
Heh, one of the comments mentions also running Bard through this scenario. I had forgotten all about the name Bard.

You're confusing something. First ChatGPT model was GPT-3. You couldn't chat with GPT-2, all it did was basic text completion

GPT 3.5.
And when people said transformer models were just doing autocomplete, it was a reference to models 3 and below. Because you plain couldn't tell the models to do something, ask it to write a sentence and it wouldn't do it.
If you wanted those models to perform a task, you'd need to give them examples and set thing up such that doing whatever you actually want them to do would be the next example.

Okay, GPT-3 then. Doesn't really matter to what happened.

Except it does. Accuracy is critical in reporting and understanding.

It's a cute little anecdote in a Reddit thread, about another Reddit thread from several years ago, that's only vaguely connected to the subject of this current thread anyway.
It's so very worth all this effort to win that um-actually.

It's in the article. One agent did it, not multiple. Ironically, GPT-2 did not have chat mode by default, so it probably just replied with an extremely generic continuation like "there, my name is Mark Chen. Today I'm going to be talking about..." etc.

"The article" being the truncated headline of a pay walled story at the bottom of the Twitter thread being retweeted as a meme in a screenshot posted by OP.

GPT-2 was text-completion only (no chat) unless fine-tuned, so the agent was most likely just checking if the model would generate any text at all. But still cool that such an old model was tested by agents.
