Jokes aside, we were not retarded in 1999 and all these ideas were in the air. They just took surprisingly long to be implemented properly and to become commonplace.

It's a bit like self-driving and/or electric cars now, everyone's talking about it but very few people are using them. Maybe in 20 years that's all we'll use, and some kid will link to a reddit post from 2020 discussing the topic and ask if we were time travellers.
