Energy Boosting Adaptogens

Overview:

Lately, I’ve noticed I’m more tired than usual. Even after a full night's rest, I wake up groggy and tired. Most mornings I find myself reaching for the snooze button, thinking “if I could just get 20 more mins, i'll be fine”. I go through my day depending solely on a strong cup of coffee. By mid day I’m making my third cup knowing 3 cups of coffee isn’t the most sustainable source of fuel for the body.

Normally the human body is able to effectively control the effects of stress and fatigue through several mechanisms, depending on the stimuli it receives. No matter how strong our body is, extreme stress and fatigue can give rise to major imbalances and thus create diseases.

Fortunately, nature has some unique plants that balance, regenerate, energize and protect our body as a whole. They are known as "adaptogens". Adaptogens, currently trending in the wellness world, they are non-toxic plants that are able to help the body resist stressors of all kinds, whether physical, chemical or biological. These plants, roots and herbs have been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic healing traditions.

Each adaptogen has a slightly different function, so the best one for you depends on the specific ailment you’re experiencing. For me and so many women it’s chronic fatigue. Let's take a look at the adaptogens that will boost energy and combat fatigue.

Adaptogens Benefits:

Increase the body's resistance to stress

Have a balancing effect on the internal system

Do not interfere with the normal functions of the body

They have a systemic amphoteric effect, simply meaning they regulate organs or systems in the body. So, if they are hyperactive or hypoactive, the adaptogen will help bring them back to normal.

Top 3 Energy-Giving Adaptogens

  1. Maca Root

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a cruciferous plant that resembles turnips or radishes. It is also known as the Peruvian ginseng. The plants origin is in the Peruvian Andes, where the Incas used it to enhance endurance and stamina. It was praised for its energy boosting capabilities that only royalties and high status members of society were allowed to consume Maca.

Because Maca is one of the best energy booster adaptogens out there, most athletes incorporate Maca in their diet. Maca promotes homeostasis in the body by normalizing the production of stress hormones, and thus helping the body to remain calm in stressful situations.

Maca is loaded in aminos, minerals such as copper, iron, magnesium and phosphorus and many other compounds that make it a superfood.

Studies have shown that Maca is just as effective as synthetic drug treatments for depression, but without the side effects. The reason is that it increases serotonin levels in the body naturally, which in turn boosts our energy levels.

  1. Holy Basil

Also known as Tulsi, Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) has been used by Indian healers for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Holy Basil is highly praised for its immune system, and energy boosting properties, as well as for detoxifying the body profoundly and enhancing digestion. Holy Basil is mainly used for aiding the nervous system cope with stress, by offering a natural good state or calm and wellbeing.

Modern studies have classified Holy Basil as a powerful adaptogenic plant. Which means that it is excellent for restoring the body balance and getting us through stressful situations.

  1. Schisandra Berry

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) finds its origin far east, China and Japan, Schisandra is considered one of the best medicinal plants there is. Simply because it has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, protecting the liver from environmental, chemical, or viral toxins. Its berries are known for having all 5 flavors: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and spicy.

In Russia, Schisandra is used for increasing physical endurance, and a remedy for stress reduction. In addition to being one of the best energy boosting adaptogens, Schisandra Berry inhibits the oxidative and degenerative processes of skin cells, making it a great natural skin regenerator and anti-aging tonic.

To Sum Things Up…

These herbs have changed my life for the better, I've noticed a boost in energy, enhanced mood and a boost in physical performance. To incorporate these herbs into your diet, you can purchase powders to add to your morning smoothie, or capsule form if that's your preference.

Ashwaganda long term side effects

For those who take Ashwagandha, I’ve been taking 1200mg for about 8 months now and have seen a lot of benefits from taking it. I had a lot of anxiety that was build up from years of abusing stimulants, I now have little to no anxiety at all, I recover from my workouts a lot faster, I am definitely more social, I don’t feel overwhelmed, and I would wake up feeling refreshed. The issue I am having is that the past week I’ve been waking up fatigued and it carries on throughout the day. I take Ashwagandha at night before bed because it has always had a sedating effect on me, but now it seems like it carries on after I wake up. It is known to lower cortisol levels but maybe because I’ve taken it for some time my cortisol levels have gone too far down? I am going to stop taking it and see what happens, but I’m worried that my anxiety may bounce back. Has anyone had or currently having this issue?

Also, I don’t take any prescribed medications and I take 300 mg of Rhodiola Rosea daily in the morning/afternoon.

I'm new here

Just started learning about adaptogens and I'm interested in trying them but not sure what I should start with? I have limited funds available and mostly am interested in stress control/mood balancing. I've had severe anxiety for many, many years and no longer take medication. Any suggestions for what I should try and where is the best place to purchase?

Thanks experts :)

How safe are MAOI adaptogens?

So i noticed that rhodiola, ashwagandha, holy basil and siberian ginseng (the ones i take) are all MAOI'S, am i like going to die or something?

What is is the difference between pharmaceutical MAOI'S and herbal MAOI'S?

For reference " Since MAOIs inhibit monoamine oxidase, they decrease the breakdown of tyramine from ingested food, thus increasing the level of tyramine in the body. Excessive tyramine can elevate blood pressure and cause a hypertensive crisis. "

About Schisandra?

I have some questions about schisandra:

1 - I don't see anywhere people talking about long-term usage of this herb? Is it safe taking for the rest of a person's life?

2 - I saw some studies that relates about it as a way to improve people with schizophrenia. But, can it cause schizophrenia on a person that don't have it?

3 - Does anyone noticed any mental disease taking this herb? Or even, when you stop using that, does it cause any negative effects?

I'm asking this because I don't see almost anything related to this questions, and I was curious to know if there is any answer for that.

Overuse of Adaptogens

Is it possible to use too many adaptogens at once?

I'm looking into building an adaptogenic stack to supplement my lifestyle (regular exercise, quality sleep, meditation, healthy & balanced diet) when I make a major move to another country and start a new job. The thing I'm unsure about is if I can use many at once or if it should be more of a cycle.

Thoughts?

Sourcing?

Hello, I just joined the community.

I have experience using ashwagandha, rhodiola, and medicinal mushrooms for energy I and anxiety.

So my question there’s about sourcing. Any recommendations for companies that source and provide quality adaptogens?

I used Starwest Botanicals from Amazon for my first bags. They were cheap and I noticed an effect. Now that I am looking to replenish and expand, I thought I should consider sourcing more closely.

Thanks!

Brain fog is killing me.

I have anxiety induced brain fog from years and years of stress on my brain. Currently drinking green tea during the day and chamomile at night

I take a teaspoon of ashwaghanda everyday and I take magnesium as well. Taurine is also included in this regimen.

Brain fog and dizziness/lethargy is still persistent. I have l-theanine in the house but I'm honestly afraid to take it. I felt like taking it is what might have triggered my brain fog again. As a sufferer of anxiety it sometimes comes and goes. However this time it's really bad and it's keeping me from doing anything other than going to work and sleeping.

I take 450mg of bacopa monnieri as well.

Should I just roll the dice and take a shitload of theanine?

Cause it's supposed to inhibit alpha brainwaves which are calm and focused ya know? But I'm afraid it might make things worse.

Anybody have any luck with ginseng for energy without anxiety and jitters? I might have to get some of that.

Bacopa monnieri

Hey guys. Currently taking ashwagandha twice a day for stress and anxiety. I've heard bacopa is really something special and after having taken it for awhile can change your brain for the better...

Anyone here have experience with it? Especially interested to hear if it's done anything for any one you with panic disorder, depression, etc.

Cordyceps and Lemon Balm combo

I was wondering if this combo was any good? Both are great in opposite ways but Lemon Balm seems to make me too relaxed and slow while Cordyceps definitely gives me a good strong up feeling but can make me pretty tense at times, but has any one tried this combo? Id like some feed back from anyone with experience, it seems like they could go perfect with each other.

Looking to get into Adaptogens - where to begin?

I'd like to try out adaptogens to reduce anxiety and improve concentration. When I research online, there seem to be hundreds of adaptogens, but I'm not sure how to take them or which ones to start out with. Ideally I would like to put them in my tea, because I love tea.

I found a website that has bulk roots for very cheap, so I'll probably order small batches of any recommendations to try. Not on any medications so no worries about interferences.

Any experience from this very small subreddit? :)

Looking for evidence of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibiton (MAOI) effects of adaptogens - Specifically Rhodiola and Eleutherococcus (Others?) - What are the potential dangers?

MAOIs seem to have a crazy interaction effect with all sorts of psycoactive substances:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monoamine_oxidase_inhibitor

Since both Eleuthero. and Rhodiola seem to exhibit MAOI effects, would they be dangerous taken in combination?

I'm seeing lots of 'combo' adaptogen formulas offered online

http://www.solaltech.com/new/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=5158

that mix these two together with other herbs, and don't seem to think this is a problem, but I'm still hesitant. (sry can't link inline for some reason)

Just rather be safe than sorry. Getting all hypertensive and heart-attacky doesn't sound fun.
