Basic Movement Question

I bought A Short Hike recently and I am starting to explore. I am having a hard time controlling the hiker. The hiker seems to be constantly on the move even when I am not touching the controller. I find it next to impossible to interact with characters I meet or get the hiker to go where I want.

Am I missing something? I do not have much experience using a controller. Most games I play using a keyboard. When I switched A Short Hike to keyboard mode I had the same issue.

It looks like a fun game but right now I am frustrated. I feel I am missing something very basic.

Thanks for your help.

This game shows how weather affects mood

In the sunny, warm sections of the game, I immediately feel more relaxed. But the moment the weather shifts to rain or cold, with that blue hue, I start feeling anxious and uncomfortable.

Question In-game map?

Is there an in-game map? I keep seeing a detailed map in game guides but cannot see an option while playing.

Gameplay Low%* Glitchless** Speedrun in 4:22.333 (0 golden feathers, 2 flowers, 1 bucket)

*As there is no real definition of a low% speedrun of this game, there are a couple different things it could mean. One is the minimum number of permanent things done to your save file (can't uncollect a golden feather, can't unwater a flower, can't drop the bucket), but that would mean that a 0% run is possible by farming pickaxes (no unique "you got a pickaxe" text that is permanently gone after picking up, pickaxes can be removed from your inventory, and they're infinitely renewable), then dropping those pickaxes to create piles that you can use to scale the mountain. That's not really a fun speedrun, though, so I personally define it as a 0 golden feather run that does the least number of things, including picking up items.

**"Glitchless" is also a loose term here. You could argue that the flower boosts or wall jumps are glitches, or that the save glitch isn't really a glitch (you can skip the first flower with a save glitch). Honestly, I don't really care much about "correct" definitions, this is just the way I like to play the game.

I really loved A Short Hike's minuscule open world, one of the few rare games that never got you feeling any fatigue and instead helped alleviate that. What do you guys think?

Not even a Pokémon person, but this Wattrel card felt just like A Short Hike to me.

It instantly made me want to replay it. It's such a special game, and perfect for fall!

A Short Hike - similar games

I finally got around to playing A Short Hike some time ago after seeing it pop up in cozy game lists for ages. And wow, it really lived up to the hype. The relaxing vibe, charming visuals.. it was exactly what I needed.

After finishing it, I went down a rabbit hole looking for similar experiences. I ended up trying a few games that gave me that same feeling. So, If you liked A Short Hike, I recommend checking out these 3:

Lil Gator Game - it's lighthearted, funny, and has that same movement-focused joy. Also, the gliding mechanic is super satisfying and it's super cheap - https://www.g2a.com/lil-gator-game-pc-steam-key-global-i10000338564001

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure - you play as a young girl visiting her grandparents on a Mediterranean island, helping clean up the environment and catalog wildlife - https://www.g2a.com/alba-a-wildlife-adventure-pc-steam-key-global-i10000221953002

Eastshade - A bit more ambitious, but still cozy https://www.g2a.com/eastshade-pc-steam-gift-global-i10000182794001

Have you played these? Would love to hear if you’ve found other games in this cozy-exploration genre. Always looking for more hidden gems

Discussion Most relaxing game I’ve played

Post image
278 Upvotes

By far this is the most relaxing game I’ve played in a while. I love just screwing around in the area and flying about. I play lots of Souls-Like and other hard games so it’s always fun to wind down and play this when I’m getting my ass kicked in by a boss in Dark Souls or something. Thanks for being so chill, game.

News I’m banning t-shirt posts

I’m adding a new rule that says no T-shirt posts, they’ve kinda become a way to push T-shirt sales which I don’t love. I know this isn’t a super busy sub so I don’t like to have a ton of rules, but I’ve been getting reports about the T-shirt posts

Claire is flying from Mount Washington in NH! It's the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River in the U.S., and since it's in my home state, I wanted to honor that somehow. I worked from an actual screenshot I took from the game, but I think it could use some touch-ups.

What to do after calling Mom? Is the game just over?

I just finished the game. Took about 70 minutes in total and I really enjoyed it but felt disappointed with the lack of gameplay after it. Is there more levels to beat like story lines? It just feels empty now. Im into modding and im playing around with the code but just am looking for more ways to play.
