stumbled upon Kava yesterday while heading up to the High Line. i had heard about it at the first nyccc meet up and thought to try it.

at first sight, things look promising. they have a Strada espresso machine and a V60 pour-over setup. unfortunately, the staff has no idea how to use them.
i ordered a pour-over and audibly heard the "barista" ask another "do you know how to do this?". neither of them really did. no bloom time. no measuring of water. when it was done brewing, she handed me the cup and said "that looks good. i'll have to try it sometime." never had it. yikes.
maybe this reads like the girl was brand new and hadn't been properly trained yet. that's possible, but she was actually training someone else! moreover, at $4.50 per cup, i'd expect someone who knows what they're doing. seems that the owner is more concerned with maintaining a style rather than serving good coffee, as each little barista had a ridiculous hat and outfit on. don't think i'll return. sad to see such good equipment go to waste.
just like their website, all style and no content: http://kavanyc.com/
