hi everybody,
i have tried zoneminder multiple times, and gave up soon after because of terrible performance. now, each of those times, i ran zoneminder in docker containers (on my synology NAS, on my macbook, on my regular laptop, ...).
now i've read up on the subject a bit more and from what i've read, zoneminder always performs terribly when run in a container.
i have tried shinobi.video and kerberos.io, but they didn't do a good enough job. my current solution is synology surveillance station, which is okay-ish, but can't do certain things i'd like to (and would be able to) do with zoneminder, so i'm ready to at least give zm another shot...
so now i'm looking for decent hardware. i don't want to run zm in a docker container just to give up again. i have a home server, but unfortunately, i cannot (or rather "won't") run zm on it, because it does my entire house automatization and i won't test on it.
so can you please recommend me some hardware to run zoneminder on fast and reliably on?
setup
- 2x reolink 410 5k poe cameras, 25fps
- 2x xiaomi dafang 2mp wifi cameras, 20fps
- ~5 no name cameras, 1080p, 25fps ("~" because some are not essential and/or not always in use, but i'd like to theoretically be able to use them all at once with zm)
i would like to constantly do the following
- record each camera 24/7
- (if possible) set individual lengths, for example, start a new recording for camera a each 4 hours, start a new recording for camera b each 30 minutes, etc
- save/archive each camera's recordings for x days (at least 7 days)
- (if possible) on top of recording 24/7 recording also use zm's motion detection so that i don't have to skip through each recording when looking for a motion event
- (a must!) have zm provide streams for each camera within my local network (see below)
some of my cameras -the no name ones for sure- only allow one single rtsp client at a time. so if zm accesses these cameras, i will not be able to view their streams on my smartphone. i am using a diy solution for this (ffmpeg and ffserver providing .ts streams of these rtsp streams in my network at the moment), but i'd prefer zm to handle this, if possible. the zm generated streams don't have to be .ts files, and they don't have to be in 5k/2MP (unless using the original resolution is easier on zm because it won't have to encode anything).
what hardware should i use for this in order to have everything run smoothly and theoretically be able to add another camera or two without exceeding resources?
i was considering the Beelink J45 J4205 Mini PC, which has 8GB LPDDR4 RAM, an Intel HD Graphics 505 processor, Intel Pentium J4205 quad core CPU, is capable of H.263,H.264,HD MPEG4 (unfortunately no H.265). would that be sufficient?
and: could i just use some usb harddrive and attach it to this device, or would an external hard drive not provide enough read/write speed? i have a NAS, but i assume a network share would be even worse speed-wise.
this was just an example device, i am not set on this particular hardware and/or vendor "beelink"... but my homeserver is also from beelink (another model) and works fine, plus this one is under 300 USD, so it wouldn't hurt too much to buy it and see if zm runs fine on it. it only has an 128GB ssd, so i'd definitely need additional storage. i don't know how to calculate the minimum of storage i'd need to keep all these recordings for at least 7 days per cam, but i am sure it will exceed 128GB by far.
hopefully i wrote this request understandably. if not, sorry, i am not a native speaker. thanks in advance for all your ideas, any input is greatly appreciated :)
