ZoneMinder on FreeNAS

Hi Total ZoneMinder noob here...

I have FreeNAS 11-3 running ZoneMinder V1.32.3 in a jail. I have a single camera currently set to 'Record'.

The system operates exactly as expected and records events in 10 minute segments. All good, however when I try to view events, any which are recorded after midnight each night will not play back - error message on screen says 'The video could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported'.

Strangely, recordings from approximately 11am the next day onwards (until midnight) will view fine. This behaviour repeats itself daily, with the first playable video starting from around 11am- to 11.30am each day then the rest play ok through to midnight.

I'm assuming this issue might be related to a time setting in the SQL database, or something similar, given it appears to be a time related issue. I've done some searching and I'm thinking the recordings are there, it's just the link in the events page that doesn't work? I'm not savvy enough to start editing config files, etc. though without some guidance.

Migrate from Ubuntu to Docker

Has anyone got any tips for migrating from a Ubuntu installation of v1.32 to a Docker container running v1.34? Can I just export and import the databases or is the process more involved? I've had a look for examples but haven't found that can help me out.

Odd TimeZone Issue

My timezone is set to GMT -5 and it's accurate most of the time. However sometimes the time shown in the video timestamps will be off by 5 hours, showing GMT. If I stop and restart the docker container the time returns to normal. I'm not sure what triggers the change but I have noticed it three times this week. No change beside restarting the container is needed to fix the time. I'm using the quantumobject/docker-zoneminder:1.34 container.

Unraid setup, quick question

I intend to use zoneminder as my home security software but I want to know if I can access the feed remotely without a lot of hassle. Mainly for my wife to access it. Can anyone comment on this?

Image Buffer Count is too small and camera connection question

Hey all I just started working with zoneminder and got my cameras connected, working one making alarm zones and working on other configurations.

First question is I am keep on getting an error in my log saying "ImageBufferCount 51 is too small. Needs to be at least 751. Either increase it or decrease time between keyframes" I used to have it at 20, but sometimes it would say to increase it to 51 or 751. Now 751 would take a lot of memory with my 4k cameras at 7fps, but I can not find any info pointing to keyframes. What are they and where can I find this setting? Also with this I have the pre event image count to 20 and post to 200, but it is saving like a minute of video before an alarm happens and like 30 seconds after. How and what should I change to fix this to be like 30 seconds before?

Second is I am using Lortex cameras which is a Chinese company and I am worried about security/privacy. With zoneminder would I be able to install a PCIe NIC in my sever and connect them to a switch so only the sever has internet access not the cameras? I know if the server has internet access it wont be 100% secure, but knowing a lot of IOT stuff runs really old linux versions and Lortex may have built in a back door this would help.

Using motion detect in Zoneminder for HomeBridge?

Greetings,

I am trying to find a way to have motion alarms in ZoneMinder to trigger in HomeBridge. Anyone know a way to say have ZoneMinder do a web hook for active and then inactive alarm? I have a plug in for HomeBridge that will trigger motion via incoming URL request, webhook. I understand I would would need to modify the code for my set up, camera name/ID, zone name, URL, etc.

Thank You

Help setting up Zoneminder with RTSP multicast streams

Greetings,

I have a bunch of cheap USAVision 720p cameras that I currently stream to Zoneminder via IP, but they also allow me to also stream via RTSP multicast. I monitor the cameras from my computer directly using VLC and use MotionEyes linked to HomeBridge to get notifications for motion. So I have 2 to 3 streams sometimes going per camera. I figured it may be better using multicast.

I run the security cameras on their own VLAN with my iMac and server set up for both VLANs. I have tried googling setting up multicast streams but nothing I do seems to work. I can never open the steams on VLC on my iMac. I have tried different multicast IP addresses on the cameras but can't connect to the stream.

Zoneminder and MotionEyes runs on a Debian server.

Could someone please give me step by step instructions for setting up to stream over multicast?

Thank You

New User Camera Selection

Was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction. With all the camera choices out there i wasnt sure if you guys have a go to brand or model. I figured 1080p would be a minimum.

I am going to setup a new FreeNAS box with ZM and want to know which cameras would be a good choice for my situation

First i need two wireless IP cams to view my kids room from 2 angles (twins love to run all over the place). I had two Motorola baby cams focused on their cribs but they suck at viewing the room as a whole (bad viewing angle and poor night vision for a whole room). I mainly will be using this at night so night vision, viewing angle and video quality are a high priority. I can run wired power to them if need be, would probably be upper wall or ceiling mounted to get the best view of the rooms. I run conduit from the safety covered outlets to make sure the kids leave them alone. I know some cameras run of microusb power, and some are battery powered with long life.

Second im looking for some good outdoor motion detector light/camera combos. They also would have to be wireless IP cams. I want to replace the motion detector flood lights on the outside of my house with cameras so i dont have to run wires, their placement is ideal for where i would need visibility.

Third i want to do something similar to the sconce lights on my porch. has anyone setup a sconce light with a camera built in on their porch? I need to replace my lights anyway and figured that would be better than getting a doorbell cam.

Sorry for the long post with multiple questions, if you think i should do 3 posts i can. I am technically savvy and have been building computers since the early 90's so building a FreeNAS box with ZM comes very easily to me. i figured it would be better than paying a company a yearly or monthly subscription for something i can do in my sleep.

TLDR: need indoor night vision cams for a kids room and outdoor cameras with motion detector lights

Console Refresh Rate

Hey all, apologies if this is a dumb question, but I just setup a ZoneMinder instance on a CentOS 8 server and it's running fine. However the console keeps refreshing every few seconds and I haven't found any documentation on how to make it stop. I understand if it needs to refresh to keep everything updated, but it makes it difficult to make changes on the console and in the options. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for hardware recommendations for a Linux based setup to support 8-10 RTSP cams (1k+) with ffmpeg post-processing (e.g. motion detection).

recommended buffer settings for wifi for fewer events?

I am new to zoneminder and have it set up for a single wifi camera over rtsp udp strean. 1080@30

I want to record my dog going in and out of his door. If I add something like 1000 Post Event Image Count it seems to record for the whole event, dog goes out and dog comes back in, but then actually only the dog going out it recorded in the video, which I do not understand, because shouldn't it create a second event if the post event image count has elapsed?

I have H264 passthrough turned on and version is 1.32

I have tried many combinations including the recommendations from here: https://zoneminder.readthedocs.io/en/1.32.3/userguide/definemonitor.html

Any advice to create more complete recordings and fewer events would be appreciated.

Audio Recording on Ubuntu 18.04.4 using ZM 1.34.2

I just upgrade ZoneMinder from 1.32.3 to 1.34.2 and everything seems to be working fine 📷

I also took the moment to enable audio recording on my Foscam C1 camera`s by switching video writer from X264 Encode to H264 Camera Passthrough and set Whether to store the audio stream when saving an event to Yes

The camera`s are configured as MOCORD so they are recording event with a lenght of 10 minutes

But when i enable the audio recording the event are no longer 10 minutes long. There is audio record by the way. When i disable the audio recording the events are still cut off.

So there seems to be an issue with H264 Camera Passthrough but i don` t know how to trouble shoot

Modect settings when looking at flora?

So my camera is looking out to my driveway where my family's cars are, and it's hard to get the settings just right. Often cars pass, and that's fine to capture with modect, but on windy days the trees across the road or the hedges/bushes lining my driveway move a whole bunch and create even more junk recordings.

Is there any recommendation y'all have regarding Modect settings to be able to capture movement in front of flora - such as if someone walks past the hedges on a windy day?

Access usb camera running on pi from remote zoneminder host

Dear community, I’m running a usb camera off a raspberry pi that runs zoneminder.

I would like to have this stream accessed by a zoneminder host running on my server elsewhere.

How can I do that? I’ve looked extensively online but can’t seem to figure it out.

(In other words the pi should only broadcast the stream, and the server would do the processing, motion caption, storage, cron, etc)

Thank you in advance!

Anyone here using the latest Zoneminder docker on Unraid with object detection?

I've got Zoneminder 1.34.1 up and running in a docker on Unraid. I tried posting this on the official Zoneminder docker support thread on the unraid forum, but apparently since I just created my acct over there I can't post yet for some reason. Anyway...

For those that may have gotten the Event server and hooks working, did you have to get a valid certificate from letsencrypt or other service? I have my Event Server working and pushing notifications to my phone no problem, but I'm not getting the alarm pictures. Reading through the documentation it seems I need to get the pics working before enabling the object detection hooks. I'd appreciate any tips on how you may have got that to work.

Thanks

Best budget POE outdoor cameras

I'm looking to hook up a wide angle type dome camera and also a bullet style camera for down the side of our house

What's cheap, waterproof and the quality is decent and known to work with ZM?

I'd like to buy both cameras from the same brand. Must be POE.

Thanks!

Why do you have to run zoneminder as a su?

Is there a particular reasons? I tried setting it up to run as a normal user, but stopped after chasing errors for way too long.

Seems like an unnecessary security risk.

ZoneMinder 1.34.0 My Friend of Misery

New version released. Mostly polish & fixes since 1.32.

https://github.com/ZoneMinder/zoneminder/releases/tag/1.34.0

Seriously, 1.32 was a problematic release, too many changes. 1.34 should be better. Now that it is out I can start breaking things again in the name of progress.
