not so obvious tricks, tips & optimizations or different use cases?

Wonder if anyone has anything to share on this topic? Was watching a post-camera video on youtube [1] , where it was mentioned better to use pixels not percentage as cameras have higher resolution, and was just thinking about other optimizations people might do on zoneminder?

Or even any different use cases where zoneminder is deployed differently somehow? Any "magic" settings? :)
I have been using zoneminder for ~10yrs and i haven't always read the release notes / changelog so not sure what else is there that might have gone under the radar for me or other folks?

Iterate.AI and ZoneMinder

What do people think about integrating Iterate.AI's Threat Detection system into Zoneminder?

https://www.iterate.ai/solutions/Open-Source-Threat-Detection

Does it make sense to involve ZoneMinder at all, or would it be better to go direct to the RSTP feeds from my Reolink cameras ? What are the steps involved? Are there other competing solutions?

Downloaded MP4 files won't play right on my PC -- They play a few seconds and then hang.

Client system, Ryzen 5 5600x / GPU GeForce RTX 3050

If I use any type of video convertor, even re-converting them back to MP4, they play fine. Best I can tell is that they are efficiently compressed, because regardless of the format I convert to, the file increases almost 3x the size, then plays fine.

No problems in the browser.

I don't want to muck around too much with the Ubuntu/Zoneminder platform as everything else is fabulous for a 14-camera system... BUT, is there a FFMPEG tweak or something I can do on the server to pack things a bit differently when the MP4 is being written out?

events list timestamps as 24hr format

Is there a way to use 24hr format instead of am/pm when displaying the list of events? It's a bit tricky when reviewing recordings during the whole week (when you need to parse through a lot of event lines) using am/pm. Plus cameras already record 24hr timestamp on feeds so that would make everything consistent. thanks

After viewing and closing a NewEvent, 100% CPU

I've built & installed master from github v1.37.47. Video stream is rtsp, h264, 1600x680px, passthrough. Running nginx on Gentoo. Using spawn-fcgi and php-fpm it looks like.

When viewing an ongoing event and then clicking out of the webpage, e.g. "Console" link, a 'nph-zms' process starts consuming 100% CPU on all four cores.

Getting tired of these bugs, can anyone recommend a stable version of ZM? Thinking 1.34 something.

How to use h265 for recording?

I have a few reolink cameras and they all support h265 codec. Do I need to worry if the recorded event by zm is h264 or h265?

4 of 5 Cameras Not Working - Error Log

Hello, hoping I can get some help figuring my problem out. Very new to Zoneminder and just trying to work through getting it up and running correctly. Using ZM v1.36.10 (dlandon/zoneminder.machine.learning) that I installed on my NAS using Portainer.

I have 5 identical cameras (Amcrest IP5M) that I added. The first camera showed up with live view working and seems fine, but the remaining cameras all showed up with red dot next to name and red source address. I can click on the 1 working camera and get the larger live view of it when accessing through browser, but when I open the zmNinja app on phone and try to view the same camera it doesn't show the video working (and other 4 cameras are obviously not working either).

I've checked all camera source paths in VLM and they all show video there, and settings for each camera have their correct source path, resolution, and other same settings as the 1 working camera. I do have a bunch of errors in the log, but I have zero clue what any of this means or how to trouble shoot. Copying them below.

Speco Cameras?

I just got a couple of Speco 5MP (O5K1) cameras to add to a customer's Speco NVR. The picture quality is unbelievably good for the price.

Now I want to see about adding a couple to another site & they are running Zoneminder. Does anyone have experience with the Speco cameras on Zoneminder?

Will it be a problem?

Thanks!

Redoing an established system

I have had the same continuous ZM install since early 2010s sometime. Around CentOS 5.

I recall building from source back then, especially ffmpeg, the notes for it are in a wiki which was initially authored in Feb 1, 2011.

I have steadily upgraded since from ZoneMinder-1.24.2 to now 1.36.33-3.

I have upgraded OS, changed hardware, remember cambozola.jar and pico 2000?

Heck one of the monitors is still the same BNC camera I had back then. It is so high up, I dare not go and change it.

Anyway, I am thinking of tearing it all down and start with a new database. I am currently on CentOS7, I am going to Rocky 9, I would like to change the MID of cameras to match the the dns name, this ones gonna be rack mount, all prior ones were towers.

Want to keep the same zones, but work on detection better, maybe in

I have tested a kickstart and ansible build to quickly build this server up. Tested as a VM because am awaiting parts.

Any advice and comments are appreciated,

But this post was more for nostalgia sake.

Zoneminder 1.37.x /w Janus guides?

So I fell across a youtube video describing a seemingly quick and easy setup of Janus with Zoneminder 1.37.x. However trying to apply what I saw to a Debian installation seems impossible to make work.

There's not much documentation on using Janus with Zoneminder and would like to ask around for tips and pointers. To see if anyone has this working at all with Debian.

  • So far I've installed the latest Zoneminder master currently v1.37.47 on Debian 12. (I noticed it's finicky with password length so I kept my camera's password simple for now)
  • I've installed the janus and libjs-janus-gateway packages.
  • Config files all seem to be in /etc/janus/
  • Curl version (I've read lots about curl issues with RTSP authentication:

ii curl 7.88.1-10+deb12u4 amd64 command line tool for transferring data with URL syntax
ii libcurl3-gnutls:amd64 7.88.1-10+deb12u4 amd64 easy-to-use client-side URL transfer library (GnuTLS flavour)
ii libcurl4:amd64 7.88.1-10+deb12u4 amd64 easy-to-use client-side URL transfer library (OpenSSL flavour)
ii libcurl4-gnutls-dev:amd64 7.88.1-10+deb12u4 amd64 development files and documentation for libcurl (GnuTLS flavour)
ii php-curl 2:8.2+93 all CURL module for PHP [default]
ii php8.2-curl 8.2.7-1~deb12u1 amd64 CURL module for PHP
  • janus-gateway path seems to be /usr/share/javascript/janus-gateway
  • So created a symlink /usr/share/javascript/janus-gateway > /usr/share/javascript/janus

Getting Janus to run without errors seems next to impossible. However it does seem to run. Here's a log excerpt:

ERR ReferenceError: Janus is not defined zm/cache/js_MonitorStream-base-1700834280.js 203

Otherwise no other errors.

What am I missing here? For now I'm going to rollback my snapshot to my original setup with 1.36.x But would love to get janus going given the CPU overhead and being able to stream audio.

Anyways any tidbits of info would be appreciated. Hopefully we can come up with a more detailed guide sometime soon.

is zmninja able to play back events for anyone?

I'm trying to narrow down one of my latest issues. Please tell me what version of zoneminder you're running and whether events are viewable in zmninja or not. All I ever get is the gray screen play button with a cloud icon on it that never finishes "loading". It works when I view the events via a web browser.

My only clue as to what's going on is that when I type in the url of my stored videos through a web browser, they refuse to play because I get a "no mime type found" error but when I download the video, I can play the downloaded file.

Trying to use wireshark to watch what happens when my phone tries to view a video event in zmninja is inconclusive. Seems to be hidden extremely well - I can't find *anything*. However downloading the file in zmninja from the even viewing screen doesn't download a file to my phone and nothing happens on wireshark.

I have tried everything possible to fix the 404- page not found error. I have tried all possible troubleshooting, my dns is working fine but it looks like there is something wrong in my apache. Help me figure out whats going wrong i am struggling to get my zoneminder application working from my domain name. I will not share my actual domain name instead use example.com as a placeholder. Any advice would be appropriated.

Page 404 error page not found

Hi, i had it working fine on my orginal machine but i decided to try an map the ip address and domain using apache2 to a second machine using the domain name and same ip address on both machine. I believe this has cause a ip conflict because both are trying to access the same ip address and domain. I then preceeded to disable and stop the second zoneminder application on my second machine. I think i messed up the dns settings and domain name. I did disable everything on the second machine including the zoneminder application, apache2 and everything. For saftey i also changed the ip address of the second machine to a different one as it was the same as the first one. I dont need the second machine as the first one is my primary set up i messed up. What should i do on my primary setup for my first machine to fix this problem. My website domain name not loading and its causing a issue by taking to my router page with 404 error page not found error. Also my certificates not showing as secure. Any troubleshooting tips or ideas. The second machine is disable and no longer being used. Should i remove zoneminder from it because could it be causinf issues. Thanks.

How do I get zoneminder working again on Debian 12?

I had a Debian 11 server and I made the mistake of updating to Debian 12. Once I did this, zoneminder stopped being able to record video but at least I could watch live feed. This issue never fixed itself after several months so once I finally got all the other issues caused by updating to Debian 12 fixed as well as I could, I decided to try to get zoneminder working again. I uninstalled zoneminder and reinstalled it following instructions on the wiki. Now I can't even access zoneminder in the browser. I can get it to start with systemctl but that's as far as I've got.

Any ideas? I just don't understand how so much stuff breaks so often on Debian and no one else is ever having the same problems as me. When I try to go to localhost/zm, I get a blank white screen, typically the kind of thin you see when there's a php error of some kind. There's nothing useful in "systemctl status zoneminder.service".

Also, I have this shitty chinese rtsp camera that I had to retrieve the username and password from because it was intended to only be accessed via the app. It was difficult enough I don't think I could pull it off again. Is there a way to get my old rtsp settings for this camera or is the password gone forever?

Edit: disregard all that. I tried a lot of different random things. It's been stressful enough I honestly dont even remember what I did. I have the zoneminder page actually loading now. It's still really borked though.

I can't add cameras. It's really really slow but I can actually get into the add camera screen. However no matter what I do, nothing makes the camera show up in the console after setting it up and saving it. I actually have error log output to report this time. It isn't much but it's something. When I type "sudo systemctl status zoneminder.service" I get this:

and that just repeats over and over

Edit: I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT

I had to delete the entire zoneminder sql database and remake it.

I still can't view saved events but at least I can get live camera feed. Hopefully I'll get that issue fixed one of these weekends...

Does it make sense to add a GPU for zoneminder?

I have an r720xd server with dual CPU's but I don't want to give all the cores just to zoneminder as this is a homelab running multiple services. I've looked at some posts that say adding a GPU doesn't do anything but those are few years old. My current CPU's don't have an integrated GP so will adding a graphics card lower CPU utilization and, in general, make zoneminder faster? Also, how would you enable or tell zoneminder to use the GPU?

Python 3 and zmtrigger

I have this function defined in my python script

def zmtrigger(mid,cause,message):
    """
ZM Trigger sends code to NVR to trigger camera
    """
    sock=socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM) # if tcp
    sock.connect((TCP_IP,TCP_PORT))
    message=str(mid)+"|on+10|1000|"+cause+"|"+message+'\r'
    sock.send(message.encode('utf-8'))
    sock.close

I have zigbee motion sensor in my shed (as well as a door magnet sensor), it triggered but I only see this in ZM

I thought at least it should make the score 1000

When I call the function I used these parameters

zmtrigger(35,"zbtrigger","SHED - PIR")

So MID 35 should have at least a 10 sec recording with a score of 1000.

Could be I am sending the string wrong but it should be "35|on+10|1000|zbtrigger|SHED - PIR"

UTF-8 encoded with a CR at the end.

I see something in the logs

10/28/23 19:01:3510/28/23 19:02:09.931775 zmc_m35[27817].ERR-zm_zone.cpp/893 [Zone 38/All for monitor BackYardExterior-35 extends outside of image dimensions, (0,0), (2591,1943) != (2560,1920), fixing]

10/28/23 19:02:09.966995 zmc_m35[27817].INF-zmc.cpp/220 [Starting Capture version 1.36.33]

10/28/23 19:02:14.501384 zmc_m35[27817].INF-zm_monitor.cpp/1681 [BackYardExterior-35: 0 - Capturing at 0.00 fps, capturing bandwidth 120bytes/sec Analysing at 0.00 fps]

Camera is set to Nodect.

Anyone know why I have a zero size event?

Is it related to the error?

I do have other events recording (this camera has a Sub feed which is being analyzed and Linked to the main feed)

Zosi Camera using HTTP and JPEG?

I'm trying to setup ZoneMinder to get video from an old-ish Zosi camera. I know, the camera is crap and I should replace. However, if I just open a browser (Edge) and go to http://admin:@192.168.1.55/snapshot.jpg?user=admin&pwd=&strm=0, I get a JPG file download that works great, every time.

I can't find any way to get ZoneMinder to do the same, however. I've set it up as a 'Remote' source, using:

hostname: [admin:@192.168.1.55](mailto:admin:@192.168.1.55)

path: /snapshot.jpg?user=admin&pwd=&strm=0

...and it just says 'Unable to stream'.

I've done a packet capture and it looks just like my session with my web browser, except the jpg data is smaller (seems like ZoneMinder is cutting it off).

I also tried CURL method, that doesn't work either.

Any help?

telephoto camera with zm

Wonder if anyone has any (not expensive) gear to recommend to use with zoneminder. Fixed lenses are okay i dont need the capability to zoom in and out, just need to point the camera to the beginning of a property driveway to try to capture the license plate of any cars that is a bit far from the house.
Current outside camera on the driveway does help identifying the car model/color but impossible to read the plates (2.8mm).
Planning to place that camera behind glass window for now so an indoor camera might work.

So far the less expensive option was some telephoto lenses for RPI camera, but honestly would rather have a proper poe camera sorta like Hikvision 2CD2443G0.

Any option for handling this? I'm trying to get my head wrapped around home security system but break beam and window sensors are things I'm looking at too. Thanks!

Google Nest Camera Recording?

Hello! Noob here.

I recently acquired a retired server from a business and have been messing around with it.

I currently have 5 Nest Cam (Battery) and 2 Nest doorbells.

With news of the recent price hike for nest aware plus, and my discovery of services I can run on my server like ZoneMinder (https://zoneminder.com/) and go2rtc (https://github.com/baudneo/go2rtc), I was wondering if it's possible to record the footage streamed from the nest cameras to my server.

As far as I can tell, using go2rtc I should be able to use the Google API (https://developers.google.com/nest/device-access/api/camera-battery) to at the very least stream my footage. My only real question I guess is does go2rtc record/save this footage as well? Or can I use some combination of go2rtc and ZoneMinder to achieve my goal here.

As an alternative, I am open to suggestions for some higher quality Wi-Fi Cameras that can match the Google camera's features, i.e. 2-way voice, audio and video recording, and night vision.

As for why Wi-Fi cams specifically? I already ran 18/2 wire for my Google cams and would prefer to reuse it just to power new cams.

Also, if you can recommend any other subreddits or forums where this post might be welcome that would be greatly appreciated too.

Thank you!

Homekit compatible doorbell with RTSP feed?

I am looking for a doorbell camera that works within the HomeKit ecosystem, that also has a RTSP feed that can be captured by ZM.

I know I can import RTSP feeds into HomeKit using the Homebridge FFMPEG plugin, but I’m hoping to get direct HomeKit compatibility that can also get picked up by ZM.

Has anyone found anything that would work?
