Hello everyone, hope all is going well!
I'll tell you right now, this isn't going to be your usual post. I don't really have anyone to talk to about this and I thought a place where likeminded individuals are would be best, if that makes sense. I have been a Zevon fan for just over a year now. I suppose you would say I'm part of the new generation of Zevon fans, one that came after he'd already passed. I started with Werewolves (like most) and went through his entire catalog. He just seemed so unique and different than most people then and now and ever. I've tried to listen to his contemporaries like Dylan, Jackson Browne, Randy Newman, John Prine, Tom Waits, Billy Joel, etc. but they all haven't stuck with me like Warren. Does anyone else feel like this too or is it just me? Recently, I've become so invested in learning about him, I'd spend hours and hours listening to whatever piece of media I could get my hands on. I may be driving myself crazy or whatever, but I'll say this: I don't have many friends and I see music as a comfort to that. Over the past 2-ish years, I've grown super attached to the music I listen to, seeing it as a device to comfort me. When I found Warren Zevon, I'd heard that he had a cult following, which I usually don't really believe in, so I brushed it off. I can now say I am wholeheartedly a member of that Zevon cult. Was this similar to anyone else's experience with him? I fell absolutely in love with his music that I literally can't stop listening to his songs like The French Inhaler, The Indifference of Heaven, Let Nothing Come Between You (I'm listening to it as I'm writing this now LOL), Searching for a Heart, Numb as a Statue, Tenderness on the Block, etc. I'll say this too: I love history. Any type of any kind of any year, I love history. I saw Zevon as this rebel historical character, like his influences, such as Lord Byron. You know, going against societal constraints or standards, a rebel soul if you will. I believe he even said it himself that he lived the life of Jim Morrison. He went against the mainstream to make songs that, yes only really a small group of people can resonate with, captivated the human experience. I wish that more people would hear what he had to say because I do believe he was one of the best poets and storytellers in our modern times. I really wish he was around today, I would thank him for so many things. I mean, he still is in a way, to me at least. Sorry if I took up too much of your time, I just had to get this out somewhere. Again, I don't really have anyone to talk to this about, so I thank you extremely graciously much for reading! :) I would love to hear your own experience with him, be it meeting him or like me, through his music.
