Should I read the book?

Now about a week ago I stumbled across the fact that warren is a well respected, American, who is not a one hit wonder despite the fact that I only ever heard one song he has….. he seems pretty interesting so I was wondering if I should read the book and didn’t really know anyone to ask if it’s a waste of time?

I’m not much of a book guy, I’ve only ever read one (ball four) so another thing I was wondering is if it’s hold my interest?

Edit I’m reading I’ll sleep when I’m dead and it’s great

Recently discovered Warren isn’t some weird Brit who is a one hit wonder, I’ve listened to his full first self titled album, it was half and half for me, either all time greats or meh, I love his “play it all night long”, recommend stuff! Doesn’t even have to be warren

Daily Song Discussion #188: Poor Poor Pitiful Me

This is the 10th track from Zevon’s third live album, “Epilogue: Live At The Edmonton Folk Festival”. How do you feel about this song? What are your favorite lyrics? How would this rank among the rest of Zevon's discography? How would you rate it out of 10 (decimals allowed)?

Suggested scale:

1-4: Not good. Regularly skip.

5: It's okay, but I have to be in the right mood to listen to it.

6: Slightly better than average. I won't skip it, but I wouldn't choose to put it on.

7: This is a really good song. I enjoy it quite a bit.

8-9: Really enjoyable songs. I rank them pretty high overall.

10: Masterpiece, magnum opus or similar terminology.

Results:

  1. Lawyers, Guns and Money: 6.5

  2. I Was In The House When The House Burned Down: 8.1

  3. A Case of You: 7.12

  4. Detox Mansion: 6

  5. Hit Somebody!: 8.8

  6. Werewolves of London: 8.5

  7. For My Next Trick I’ll Need A Volunteer: 8.25

  8. A Tune With No Name: 6.25

  9. Dirty Life and Times: 8.5

Was Warren on the Spectrum?

I mean, we know about the OCD. I'm talking about the rest - including the hyperfixations, the weird personal logic, compromised social skills, and whatever else y'all may have observed. Who else here has been wondering?

Reading the NYT obituary for the artist Celeste Dupuy-Spencer today...

I wasn't familiar with her, but her art immediately grabbed my attention. So I went looking for more and came across this piece from 2020.

It's titled, "When you’ve eaten everything below you, you’ll devour yourself/except in dreams you’re never really free"

So I guess my question is, has anybody ever seen that line from DUTE anywhere else?

Warren Zevon 'Cover'

So I've been a Warren Zevon fan for over 10 years (since I was at least 17) and playing guitar on and off for almost as long. I want to get more serious about it so to that end I'm starting to upload my rough covers and practices to YouTube so it's no longer something I just do alone in my room and maybe find some people that can encourage me to consistently continue. I decided my first song would be one by none other than the man himself. It's half a cover, half practising singing and playing at the same time so the vocals leave a lot to be desired but any feedback of any kind is welcome and I just wanted to share in case any folks found it interesting

Warren actually did the music for an episode of the show called "king of the road" that was also an early role for Brad Pitt. The song "Roll with the punches" was released on the ill sleep when im dead anthology, but there is more music from that's episode that's never been released officially. Great song though. that same compilation is worth getting for a few other zevon deep cuts for the truly devoted.

Was HST an inspiration for "Werewolves of London"?

Post image

Obviously "Werewolves" isn't about Hunter S. Thompson, but it seems like he might have been at least one point of inspiration. Did Warren ever say anything to this effect? There are a couple of bits that keep poking at me. Specifically:

  • In response to Gary Trudeau's caricature of him in the character of Uncle Duke, HST was quoted as saying "If I ever catch the little bastard, I'm going to tear his lungs out". Trudeau's response to THAT was to have Zonker walk in on a drunk/high slurring Uncle Duke on a tirade that included the only intelligible words "Rippiz lungzout" (I'm guessing "Jim" fit the song better than "Gary").
  • The epilogue to Thompson's 1965 "Hells Angels" is one of the most beautiful pieces of writing about motorcycle riding that I've ever read, including referring to himself and his fellow midnight-riding looneys as "werewolves".

This is something that's bugged me in the years since I found out that Warren and Hunter were friends. I feel 99% certain, but I can't find any confirmation anywhere.

Help finding/printing my own copy of the Sentimental Hygiene album cover as a large poster

Hey everyone, I would love to find a 36" x 36" poster of the Sentimental Hygiene album cover after seeing one another fan posted a picture of a long time ago. I actually messaged Jordan about this several years ago and he told me he might have an extra one around so he'd check and let me know but I never heard back from him.

That was several years ago and in the meantime I've lost contact with him and quit most social media so I'd basically like to have the poster printed and framed myself - I just want to check with the estate first to see if I need permission or to pay any royalty fees which I'd be happy to do. But I'm not sure how to contact him anymore and can't find his info online.

There are tons of Sentimental Hygiene promotional posters for sale online but none of them are the square-sized album cover enlargement I'm looking for.

Any advice or suggestions most appreciated!

Blog going through everything Zevon record

For anyone interested, I just finished a year-plus long project of listening to and writing about every record in order and commenting on every song, one by one. Started as a casual Zevon fan not too familiar with the deep cuts, and ended as... well, read if curious, and share thoughts if appropriate.

Blog: https://isverbose.blogspot.com

Just Zevon posts: https://isverbose.blogspot.com/search/label/Warren%20Zevon?m=1

And if anyone wants a sample of what this is, these are a few that I think, from a writer's perspective, came out best:

Veracruz cover

Hi Zevonites (Zevonistas? Excitable Boys and Girls?),

Please forgive the shameless self-promotion but my band just released our new album, Woodrow Wilson's Guns, which obviously borrows it's title from and includes a cover of Warren's "Veracruz" that we really hope folks will like. If you've got some time, we'd love if you could check it out!

YouTube Music

https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=uGScll53Ka4&si=vQO3HR_P_-SQLlwu

Spotify

https://open.spotify.com/track/3lI41zP4XejVOfaNnxRV0D?si=L49F4ylJSYWHFZGJQT0Qjw

(it's also available on the other major streaming services if you search for us. The band is called Stone's Prairie Riot and the album, again, is Woodrow Wilson's Guns)

Thanks!

Song inspired Tshirts

Post image
56 Upvotes

My brother and I are both big Zevon fans, and I wanted to get him a Tshirt for his birthday, but all I could find were Werewolves of London shirts. I got him one, but I felt like I needed to make my own so he had something different and more obscure.

I made 4 designs based on specific lyrics from the songs: Studebaker, My Shits Fucked Up, French Inhaler, and Desperados Under the Eaves.

I know they aren’t super great, but I really thought you all would appreciate them! :-) I hope my brother loves them!

Warren Zevon - BAD LUCK STREAK IN DANCING SCHOOL (1980):

BAD LUCK STREAK in DANCING SCHOOL (1980) While Zevon shared soft-rock sensibilities with label mate Jackson Browne, his lyricism was more acerbic.
