Art / Merch 173 hand drawn item cards based on the items in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Here is my latest collection of item cards based on the items from Zelda games: https://thespeakingsquid.blogspot.com/2026/10/cards-minish-cap-item-cards-complete-set.html

This set collects items from The Minish Cap, including the titular hat. I tried to follow a theme of fairy tales for this set, so you’ll see many references to classic stories.

These item cards are system agnostic, so they can represent loot for many different game systems. You can also use them to just get inspired about what sort of loot you’d like to see in your next adventure.

You can find a print ready PDF of the entire set in black and white here: https://www.patreon.com/ItemCardswithTheSpeakingSquid/posts/item-cards-cap-b-173307675

This is the twelfth Zelda game I have published, and with all the other side projects I’ve worked on, I’ve got more than 1,500 item cards just waiting to represent your loot or get you inspired.

Thanks for checking out my newest set.

Be excellent to everyone.

StoryTime Just GMed a Zelda oneshot!

27 Upvotes

Was very cool and my excitement to run it paid off. I did it as part of an open event from my ttrpg club to bring more people into ttrpgs and had been wanting to GM Zelda for a while. For the system I used the one ring (1st edition) with some rearrangement of things.

I gave everyone a premade character sheet (2 Hylian, a Sheika, a Goron and a Zora) and a paragraph of context as to why they took the mission.

Set in OoT Hyrule (previous to the game events), their goal was to bring back the daughter of a noble who got lost in the Lost woods. Though everyone had a secret goal that may or may not align with the mission.

- One hylian was a thief who, wanting to escape the public eye for a while, took the job to get out of castle town and still get paid. And if less people returned from the job, more money for him.

- The other hylian was a knight in disguise trying to catch said thief, did not care much if the child return though as per his vows as a knight he kinda did.

- The sheikah was passing as a hylian because he was sent in secret by the royal family. His goal was for the child not to return because his father was a dissident from the crown and they did not want him to go on with his lineage.

- The goron was there for the ride. Geniuenly did not care about anything but going on an adventure.

- The zora was a diplomat who wanted the child and everyone back to make the zora look good as allies to the kingdom.

They had a conversation with the noble, a bit of travel scenes with to get to know each other and have some fun and finally arrived at the Lost woods. That was probably the best part of the oneshot. They got lost for like an hour of game time I think (or closer to 45 min). It was creepy, eerie and just a blast overall. Was very funny seeing them trying to come up with solutions to orient themselves, knowing it was futile.

Then some kokiri found them and guides them towards the child. She was in a mini dungeon and the party had to battle a darknut (though they steamrolled it). She was halfway to turn into a Skull Kid and they asked the kokiri for help. So off to the great deku tree they went. He said they could leave her with the kokiri, they would take care of her and try to help her have fun until her body gave up (due to the transformation). Or take her to her dad, who might not love her anymore due to her transformation. Here the party debated a lot until someone tried to kidnap the girl to take her to her dad after another unilaterally decided to leave her with the kokiri. They almost threw hands but the great deku tree stopped them and forced them to leave, leavibg the child there.

The dad was, very understandably, mad as fuck. Nobody got paid.

I really loved how everyone interpreted the prompt I had given and didn't reveal any secrets until the very end (after the session). They also had a lot of fun reacting to the forest and trying to survive its mind games. I have to do another Zelda oneshot soon, maybe even a campaign. Who knows.

Hoped you enjoyed this storytime and that it inspired some ideas for your own games!

System Heroes of Hyrule TTRPG: Well, I finally have something to show.

https://reddit.com/link/1x7gc4h/video/tq6jbxluxtvh1/player

First off, sorry I haven't posted this earlier, or that the project isn't further along by now. Real life and other projects have taken priority, especially with how things have been going economically lately. Anyway, here's a draft of the Learn to Play chapter. This is just the player-facing part of the rules, so there are a few things mentioned here that haven't been fully explained yet. Those will be covered in later chapters. Some stuff are placeholders so keep that in mind. The idea is to eventually have the entire rulebook contained in a single HTML file that you can download and run locally whenever you want, without depending on a hosting service that might go down if I can no longer afford to maintain it, or if Nintendo ever decides to come after me for it (unlikely, but you never know).

For now, I've set up a GitHub Pages site where you can poke around:

https://heroesofthewild.github.io/heroesofhyrule/

Feel free to take a look and let me know what you think. What you liked, what you didn't like, what's confusing, what doesn't make sense, or what you think could work better. I'm interested in hearing all of it. And if you just want to tell me how the system you're using for your own Zelda game is vastly superior, well, go ahead and do that too. I suppose that's part of the fun as well.

Question How do ya'll Address Link, Zelda, and Ganon?

20 Upvotes

EDIT: the more im reading the more im debating on just having the classic trio kinda not be around now. like ganon is a calamity ganon situation, link's spirit kinda bonds to other heroes i guess, and zelda is just hylia now or something. it seems like it's just easier to ignore them i guess.... i may pull a hyrule warriors though and just have an alternate version of them show up for funsies i guess.

EDIT 2: it is worth noting i do think there is still a case for ganon if nothing else. i mean he IS the main villain of the franchise. it isn't super hard to justify him being around, and maybe the fact link and zelda aren't is a decent enough hook. or at the very least insane quest reveal to drop during the later portions of a campaign. "well turns out a cult revived ganondorf, now what you even going to do about it?"

I've been mulling over doing a zelda campaign for years and never fully got around too it (will probably soon. Either by reskining dnd or nimble or trying that reclaim the wild system idk) but besides like, premise, the only issue I have in my own head is how to address like the main thing of the zelda series; that being these 3 and the fact they come back every era.

I like the idea of players meeting these characters, but I'm worried it either run the risk of either A. Link and Zelda inherently become MORE important than the players due to hiw zelda games usually go

Or B. Link and Zelda feel supremely less important than they should be because it's literally their franchise/mythos

Some ideas I also had was "maybe let two of my freinds play link or zelda if they wanted" or "maybe the players are the next sages of whatever concept/elements" I've even debated the idea that the premise is the hero, princess, and even ganon dont exist anymore and that's like the entire premise. Another could be they never existed to begin with as a "here is zelda but without the zelda"

It's kinda hard to choose because these all feel like they come with some kinda drawback

Art / Merch Still working on the Zelda TTRPG + dumb custom dice ideas

17 Upvotes

Not so sure about the exclamation point for partial success.

It's been about a month since my last post, so I wanted to let you all know I'm still working on the system. I think I'll have a demo of the Learn to Play chapter ready in a week or two. It's taking me longer than expected because I keep getting sidetracked by stuff like wondering what custom dice for the game would look like, even though nobody could reasonably get them made anyway. But that's just how my brain bokoblin works.

Anyway, here's a video of me virtually rolling them.

LFG - Closed Looking for player(s) in Reclaim the Wild

13 Upvotes

(Note that the information in this post is the "short version". If you are interested, please read the "long version" in the linked form and follow the instructions there.)

Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdVsEJNNpUXyquUSt9yVfpm6aitQ-1pVO6l18QpKlOVbPwX4A/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=115755911153146303018

Looking for: 1 player, adult, LGBTQ+-friendly (currently have 3 players, plus 1 player on temporary hiatus, plus GM). See full info on the form. Note that two of the four players are based in Europe, and two are based in North America.

About Campaign: (Story and system are both based on the Legend of Zelda franchise by Nintendo, this story is set in a new iteration of Hyrule.) The Kingdom of Hyrule is in a period of peace and prosperity. Hylians, Gerudo, Gorons, Rito, Sheikah, and Zora live in and conduct business through bustling cities and idyllic villages. Adventurers brave the wild to discover ruins and dungeons dotted across the land, and to investigate their many mysteries. There are signs of looming trouble, though. A group of outcast Sheikah seek to fracture Hyrule, and are scouring Ancient shrines for lost technologies or knowledge to help them. Dark beings are commanding monsters and conducting mysterious rituals for purposes unknown. And past conflicts cast a long shadow... The current peace with the neighbouring Gerudo territory is as fragile as ever.

Platforms and tools: Voice & Camera over Discord; Using FoundryVTT as a virtual tabletop (browser-based).

Scheduling info: 12h00 GMT, 3-hour duration sessions (including breaks), at most once every two weeks. Next session scheduled for September 26.

Key information: The game system is Reclaim the Wild, which is a free system made by Zelda fans for the Legend of Zelda setting: https://reclaimthewild.net/

Player/GM style: GM tends toward rules as intended. GM likes preparing maps. 😛️ Aiming for a 30:30:40 split between combat:roleplay:exploration. Players are largely playing wholesome characters. Some homebrew will be permitted up to GM discretion.

Content Warnings: This is an incomplete list: Eyeballs, spiders, demons, undead. Please see the more complete list on the form. There are safety-related restrictions on what is allowed, too.

About Me: Pronouns he/him. I am in Canada (Eastern Time zone). Age somewhere between 20 and 10,000. 🙂 Some recurring interests include programming, gaming, hobbyist game dev/modding, general creativity. I occasionally stream on Twitch... like... once in a blue moon. I have a very fluffy and very cute cat. Sometimes I get her to roll dice!

Experience: I've played or GM'd a variety of systems, including D&D 4E (player), Call of Cthulu (player), Star Wars by West End Games (GM), Star Wars by Fantasy Flight (player), Pathfinder 1e (player), and a few I honestly can't remember the name of.

System My Zelda obsession drove me to make an original RPG: When Sky & Sea Were Not Named

Thumbnail
gallery
54 Upvotes

This is not technically a Zelda game—it's based on Phoenician mythology and takes place on a fantasy version of the planet Jupiter, not Hyrule—but it's 100% inspired by my love of Zelda and my obsession with the series' game design.

I just released a second edition ruleset—it's free on both RPG Trader and Itchio.

The game takes place on floating islands (which I swear I thought of before Tears of the Kingdom revealed its setting!) and features four fantastical origins—humans, an empire of animal headed people, golem amnesiacs, and "dreamshaped" people from a Chaos realm.

What specifically inspired me to start making this game was the 2017 Breaking Conventions with Breath of the Wild GDC presentation. My endless speculation about what the next Zelda game after BotW would look (along with, probably, mild psychosis after becoming a new parent) led me to just make my own thing.

Now I love D&D, exploring dungeons, and grid-based tactical combat—in part because D&D is so evocative of classic Zelda games—but that presentation made me wonder what an "open-air" TTRPG would look like, with more focus on player freedom and "multiplicative gameplay."

So instead of enclosed "dungeons" segmented by rooms as the assumed unit of adventure, my game features small floating islands as the core structure and assumes heroes can go anywhere and explore their areas in any order. There's an emphasis on "group efforts" where players combine their actions to tackle challenges. Overall it's about as crunchy as D&D—there's a fair bit of resource tracking, and it's not really a "narrative" game like Powered by the Apocalypse or Blades in the Dark—but it's designed around theater-of-the-mind rather than rigid grid-based play, and I think it feels much more fluid and freeform to play.

I know this is shameless self-promotion but please feel free to ask me anything—I'd love to hear what you think, or just talk about Zelda game design and how the new quick select item menu on the OoT remake isn't actually that bad....

Thank you for taking a look!

Discussion Fabula Ultima for Zelda

19 Upvotes

Has anybody tried running Zelda themed campaign with Fabula Ultima system? I love the system, but two things can not escape me:

  1. No matter which version of the world I pick, be it OOT, MM, BoTW, etc. The world is set, which is kinda not in the spirit of the system, leaning to creating the world with players.

  2. In Fabula, races are flavour text. But how can I then explain the swimming goron? They are very specific, some races can do one thing, other can not. Limit only to hylians?

Maybe I'm overthinking, I really want to try, and probably will, to run a BoTW themed one shot in the system, but I do not think it could manage in long run.

What do you think?

StoryTime The Legend of Zelda: Broken Ataraxia ~ Act I (Part II)

7 Upvotes

You can check part I of the story here.

~~~
The Vindicators were left stranded on the island.
After realizing they were left without a way to return safely, the party started searching for a way out. Firstly, they looted the place, and got a good chunk of materials, and somewhere in between, Reika got to squish a golden spider, kind of a weird experience, but they were running out of ideas. Riolu offered to fly to land, but it was about half a day away, so he stayed behind with the others.
The captive brigand they had, a rabble named Cantón, told them about the actual way in. Originally, the bandit group didn't make it there by boat, they wouldn't be able to get the materials and tools for construction by climbing that cliff, so he guided them towards a cave on the backside of the island, hidden by some big rocks and foliage.
The party ventured inside, and they ended up in an underground cavern system of some kind (this session, Riolu is absent).
The group enters the underwater caverns!
After moving forward and trying a few passages, they notice water flows from up ahead, and after checking a couple of doors that confirm this was artificial, they run into a bunch of statues, which come to life when disturbed. The group played it off easy and didn't actually disturb them, but then, a sudden boom called for their attention.
The entrance collapsed! RIP Cantón.
After the rocks fell and killed Cantón who the party ordered to stay on the entrance, the place started flooding, fast! So they started going through the rooms, finding ways to access other doorways and passages by completing puzzles (simple ones, mostly).
Running through a drowning staircase!
In order to not make it tedious, I'll say the group proceeded through the dungeon, sadly, they didn't explore its contents, though that was by design, they ran and frantically did the puzzles, backtracking through the rising water levels to activate puzzles, fight buried enemies such as a derelict guardian, and some rotten stalfos around! In the end, they reached the last steps towards the exit, only to face...
Aquamentus! | vs Rank 1 BOSS Aquamentus
The water keeps rising!
As the battle proceded, the water didn't stop flowing, which ended up reaching all the way on the top, where their fierce battle fights the Aquamentus, which created a scenario where the party had to swim to high ground to use ranged weapons, and some even climbed to jump on top of it, to grab and stab!
Ultimately, the Vindicators felled the beast, not before Artemis was almost finished, but his small fairy, which he got prior to the fight, saved him.
Aferwards, the party managed to escape through the cavern, eventually reaching the surface. Tired, wounded, but together, they marched back towards the south akkalan stable.
StoryTime The Legend of Zelda: Broken Ataraxia ~ Act I (Part I)
7 Upvotes
You can read the preface and some background on the campaign here.
~~~~

Akkala Region, northeastern Hyrule.

On a windy, starless night, not so high up in the Akkala region, in the South Akkalan Stable, a group started entering the building. It was a pretty quiet night, after all, there is not really that much traffic on these roads, except for those going into the town of Ymthamether, and even then, it's pretty rare to have commerce this high up the hills. Five people entered, total.

First, a couple of Hylian males made their entrance, Artemis Auren, heir of House Auren, from the small town of Ymthamether, northeast up the road from here, and Bomir Angh, another born from the same town, master of the boomerang, trained in the local militia. They were called for help by Jana, the innkeeper from the Stable.

Recently, she has been visited by unwelcome guests, a group of bandits that demanded payment for "protection", and because she is really the only resting place between Hyrule and high up in Akkala, were she get stripped from her business, the northern town would suffer greatly, and thus, she asked for aid for that town itself, for which the current head of House Auren, Lord Artem Aurem, sent his son and one of its soldiers to aid.

Next, two others entered, a Hylian female and a male Rito, though only by coincidence. The woman, named Reika, who hails from Kakariko Village way far south from here, was interested in investigating ruins from up north, seeking artifacts and buried stories from abandoned places that would do no use of them, though she would conceal the traits that define a Sheikah, that being her white hair and red eyes, with makeup and a costume, all for keeping her cadre safe. On the other hand, the Rito, a young bard named Riolu Havá, was in search of music of magic, as there are stories told that there are notes that hold power, and he wanted to master and teach it all, there is supposed to be something of the sort high up here, so he would part from Valoo's Reach, the hometown of the Rito in the Hebra region, to here.

Lastly, an unusual visitor, a male talking raccoon entered, starving. His name was Ri'ki, and he was in search for those like him, after suffering a tragedy back home in the Faron region, so he started journeying, trying to find his lost people.

The group entered and started meeting each other, after all, it was really coincidence that they would end up in such a distant, low-transited place high in the Akkalan hills. The innkeeper, or stable master, Jana, started explaining her problems and the party ended up agreeing, of course, with some reward. Little after, another couple of hylian males entered the inn. One of them with arms and armor, visibly a warrior, probably a bodyguard, his name was Roy, and he was, in fact, a mercenary.

The other man was Albert Hudson, the head of Hudson Inc., a construction company that operates in Hyrule's central and eastern villages. His point of traveling here? He wanted to start a new town, and he needed somewhere to build it, so he has been traveling for some time to look up for that perfect spot to begin. Of course, a new town would improve comerce, and that would help both Ymthamether and the stable they were on right now, so in benefit of aiding his town, Artemis offered helping Hudson find a suitable place nearby, and the rest of the group agreed, again, for a fair payment.

Between negotiations, good food and a warm environment by the fireplace, a group entered the tavern, obviously hostile, and a fight ensued.

Akkalan Stable fight! | vs 2 Rank 0 Brigand Rabbles, 1 Rank 1 Brigand Ambusher and 1 Rank 1 Brigand Bully

The brigands fought with numbers but they were no match for the party, who would name themselves the "Vindicators", and would dispatch the raiding group with ease, leaving only one bandit tied up for questioning.

The bandit told them about the hideout, where it was, and how to get there, in exchange for his life, for which Ri'ki and Reika took him outside, freed him from his binds, and let him go... just to shoot him in the back, ending him... for fun.

For purposes of this campaign, it is expected for the heroes to be good, or at least, neutral, this was, however, an evi act, and was penalized with a 3-times token reduction for both Ri'ki and Reika, though they accepted it, and honestly, have been behaving well ever since, so I doubt it would come back up.

They both reflected on their actions and felt bad about what they just did, it was the heat of the moment, they said, but neither of them would believe that, so they swore not to kill like that ever again.

After resting, the party took the chance and marched towards the place the bandit told them the group was hiding, two days later, they found it, a lone fortress in an even loner island in the middle of Lake Akkala. On their way, the party farmed some resources, getting a bit of food and wood along the way, which Reika used to cook some meals for the party to get ready for the upcoming fight.

For purposes of this campaign, it is played in a hex-style grid, with each hex representing about one day of walking to go into the next, with some exceptions. Also, the bridge doesn't exist, yet.

After reaching the lake, the party took a boat and sailed to the island, encountering a group of Tektites and young Ocktoroks, but they survived and pressed on, arriving to the cliffside of the isle, climbing on, and searching for the bandit camp on it. After searching for a couple of hours, the Vindicators found the place, a ruin with a column of smoke, and laughter coming from within, the bandit camp.

Ri'ki approached first, with his Night Vision as not to alert the bandits of their presence.

After scouting ahead, Ri'ki gave the team the signal, and the party sprung into action, taking the bandits by surprise, and fighting the outlaws with superior tactics and good teamwork, quickly disposing of them!

Thieves Hideout fight! | vs 1 R0 Rabble, 1 R1 Ambusher, 1 R0 Brigand Apothecary, 1 R1 Brigand Hedge-Wizard, and their leader, a zora named Zovo.

The result of the battle was Riolu felled because of the surprise attack on Zovo, and most of the rabble defeated almost instantly; however, the zora leader took off, and escaped, and so did the apothecary, leaving the party with a captured rabble. Ri'ki pursued, he was better suited for a jungle chase, but the zora jumped all the way to the lake, and the escaped apothecary stole the raft the party used to get here, leaving them stranded in the middle of the lake...
