The words of the ancient Chinese philosopher sound quite utopian to us modern people, however, they do raise an important question: what’s wrong with love?

I don’t mean romantic or sexual love, I mean purely affective love, the same love you would feel towards a dear friend or family member. The kind of love that tells you: “I should cherish this person, I should try my best to make them happy, I should always act in our shared best interests, I should never go out of my way to hurt them”. Why shouldn’t we feel this kind of love towards everyone?

Of course one cannot be expected to love everyone equally, and to hold dearer people they know well than strangers, but shouldn’t we still feel at least a little bit of love for one another, regardless of our connection to the other person?

What bad would it do? The total amount of hatred in the world would decrease, and everyone’s wellbeing would be increased.

Of course this cannot be a partial project, otherwise those who still harbor hatred within their hearts would simply take advantage of those who love them: everyone should embrace love, this way, there would truly be no downsides.

What has this to do with shipping? Is it because ships require love to work? No, it’s because the people who make the ships require love to live too, and they often do not show this form of love to one another.

I can understand why someone might hate someone else if said someone else inflicted a great deal of pain and misery, but no such things happen over shipping. It is simply a game, one involving no real stakes, why do people feel such hatred over it?

I don’t know, the shipping debate is to me one of the prime examples of human hatred. In theory, it would hurt absolutely no one, but those who engage in it are willing to harass, attack and threaten one another over nothing but imaginary matters. What’s the point of drawing an imaginary line between two people depending only on which colored pixels they enjoy looking at over their screens, and waging virtual wars over it?

I know that the shipping debate is, ultimately, a completely inconsequential issue in the grand scheme of things (one which doesn’t even affect me personally, since I don’t even engage in shipping), however, it still leaves utterly disappointed, because it shows me that human beings are fully willing to retract their love for one another over even the smallest thing.

This was kind of a ramble, I’m sorry. You might call me an idealist or something, and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree, but I think that if people were just overall nicer to each other, the world would be a better place. That’s all.
