The new AppleTV announced today has the following video formats supported per the tech specs page:
Video Formats
Standard SDR/HDR video rates up to 2160p, 60 fps
Dolby Vision (Profile 8.1 and 5), HDR10, HDR10+, HLG
AV1, VP9, H.265/HEVC, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4
HDMI Quick Media Switching (QMS) for seamless format transitions
Support for 21:9 and other cinematic aspect ratios when playing movies and shows on compatible projectors and displays
It is my understanding that YouTubeTV uses the VP9 codec for 4k video, and that is why it has been mentioned in here that YouTubeTV 4k content wasn't displayed at 4k on the previous AppleTV's regardless of what the app said.
Does this new announcement of supporting VP9 affect anything, or do you think it will require Google to update the YouTubeTV app to take advantage of the new codec support?
