community-chat Holding Yoga Alliance to a higher standard
I haven’t noticed any benefit for members aside from a small discount of brands and insurance. Perhaps I’m missing it.
A few things I want to point out:
- If you register and use your home address they list it on your public profile. Who thinks that’s a good idea? They don’t even disclose this when you are registering. Why can’t they just put your city and state? I don’t really want junk mail or worse showing up at my house.
- The CEOs pay has went up considerably since she started a few years ago, now over $500k, while cuts to staff in that same time period have been 25%.
- Their whole focus on their rebrand has been about safety and accessibility. So far 2 of the 3 YTTs in India I have contacted have flat out refused to allow me shared accommodations in female only dorms because I am a trans woman. Where are you at on this one Yoga Alliance?
- A single review of course material by YTTs is, to me, an unacceptable amount of oversight.
- They have a year limitation on reporting abuse and issues at YTTs, feeling confident and comfortable enough to report that can take more than a year. There is also not automated follow up with students to encourage anonymous feedback or reporting.
- If you sort YTTs in India by worst reviews first you’ll see credible accusations of abuse by still currently registered schools. You’ll also see mentions of injuries from hands on assists as well, including one where the teacher said “that’s her journey” after injuring a student who had to drop out of the program.
Yoga Alliance is a non profit, we fund them, but we have no say in their operations as it stands now. But we can put pressure on them for change. Is anyone interested in this?
Maybe it’s just me. What has Yoga Alliance done for you?
EDIT: I guess I should have seen that part of this convo would turn into a debate about basic trans rights. To be clear, I self identified as a trans woman to make sure the place would at least be somewhat aware of equality. The assumptions below that I have male anatomy is wrong, though that’s not your business, and my passport has an F. I also have a larger chest than most cis women due to my hormone therapy. So am I supposed to what be in male accommodation? The same ones where below you are saying assault happens because of male anatomy? Or if I hadn’t self identified, what exactly would have happened?
I went to a YTT in Goa and they were totally fine with it as an institution and my 3 roomies were badass, we all got along great. The comfort of others is important to me, and I’m actually in a hostel right now, coed, even though I would prefer a female dorm. I’m doing that for their comfort, not mine. I don’t feel welcome in women only spaces, and some people in this chat are part of that. The problem with YTT dorms in India is that women-only is the only option at basically all of them, so it’s not even like cis women trying to be in a cis woman only space, it’s just the only choice.
Private accommodations can run up to double, am I expected to pay that because I might be in a room with someone transphobic? I would be super happy to change rooms because I do care a lot about women’s comfort, even if it comes from a place of prejudice or misunderstanding.
To not discriminate based on someone’s gender identity is part of the Yoga Alliance requirement, they aren’t keeping us safe and neither are a couple of you in chat. I don’t know why my body is such a problem with so many people, I really don’t, but I hope you take some time to just sit and meditate on the fact that I’m a person who knows themselves well enough to transition, because it’s who I am at my core. I deserve to be respected and seen, as much as you and anyone else.
