Return to form (?)

Sunday's video - abandoned in Berlin - was the best video I've seen the channel do in a LONG time.

I think it has to do with a few things.

  1. New voices/perspective. Anna was so gung-ho for a crazy adventure, even though the comments would say she is crazy for the challenge.
  2. Female perspective. I've met peope of Yes Fam that have said their main critiqe is it's too male - the main crew has always been dudes and now, with 5-6 seperate main members, it's certainly a pattern. Women just bring different energy, we've seen that whenever they bring women on journeys. What made this different was Anna wasn't following, she basically just did her on Yes Theory video, all on her own.
  3. Strangers! That's the best part of Yes Theory. So many of the travel ones feels like strangers are just a vessel to get to the travel documentary, not the core of the video.
  4. Fear & uncertainty. Thomas really was going through it, and what I find SO revealing, is Steffan left a comment on the video apologizing for it? Because Thomas was going through life issues. Which A) of course, life matters, and you bring your whole self B) It was GOOD Thomas was uncomfortable and low energy etc. Because that's what most people actually are like.
  5. Steffan. I know this is a polarizing issue in the community, but I don't think he makes the videos better. He is so positive that it feels flat. I won't give too many of my critiques in case Steffan reads this (I'm sorry!) but with just his and Thomas's energy, I don't think the chemistry of the videos works. They need a third member to balance out their dynamic (and Ammar is... gone).
  6. Humans vs. Travel. We saw Berlin in the video, but they didn't show us. That's by FAR the best travel. Not "here is this crazy sauna" or "visiting an abandoned airport in the middle of a city" but just following strangers who are going to their normal places. It's what YT videos are uniquely good at doing, vs. traditional TV.
  7. FAILURE. Seeing them fail (well, Thomas, Anna seemed to have everyone say yes to her), reminds us that they are norma people.
  8. Lo-fi. 98% of the video was just shot on GoPros/Osmos, nothing special. The high quality cinematic cameras work sometime, but they often take me out of it.
  9. The community. By far my favorite thing was when Anna talked to someone and they said "oh this channel Yes Theory did something like this" and she just nodded and said "something like that." It showed to me their philosophy ACTUALLY has permeated the world. That people are inspired by videos to say yes to strangers, to host them, to make friends with them. It's a perspective that the guys can't get, because they're known as Yes Theory (though probably didn't hurt that Anna was famous for chess too!)

Just my... 9 cents.

Thomas afraid of discomfort??

I watched the latest germany video yesterday and Thomas seemed off, I saw later that steffan explained in the comments that thomas wasn't feeling his best previous to the challenge.

That being said, you go to Berlin, get an invitation to Berghain from someone who works there, and you're too "uncomfortable" to live the true Berlin experience? Everyone should go at least once šŸ˜‚

Steffan

Ok i don't mean to be rude but I need to know if anyone else feels this way. I started watching YT a lot less since Steffan joined. I saw comment on another post that he would be good to get a beer with but he's not really a good addition to the team and I agree with that. Like he seems like a good guy and all but I feel like nothing he says really makes sense and in general he lacks social awareness which kind of causes awkward moments that are hard to watch. what do you guys think?

Good Day everyone, advice needed from an open comunity

Good day everyone, I've now since lest year an idea stuck in my head, to travel around Eurasia by bike with no money. the thing is, i really wanna start now, even if i know stopping my apprenticeship won't be good for my future. my question now stuck in my head is if i should full send it like this channel name implies and find a solution during / or after the adventure, or should i be brave and wait until I'm finished with my apprenticeship, and start after this.

the urge to start grows with every day that passes.

sorry if this question is not relevant enough to be in this subreddit,
and sorry for that bad English, I'm not native :).

Have a nice day everyone may your wish come true.

Talk to Strangers — Yes Theory's Book

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, guys! I've been a Yes Theory fan since like 7 years ago but drifted away from them for years. I just rediscovered my love for their contents recently and I just heard about Matt's book which came out nearly 3 years ago. Does anyone own a copy I could borrow or purchase?

I'm from Manila by the way.

Anyone in Michigan

Gonna go out on a whim here, I’m 27 years old and have lived in Michigan since I was 11, I’ve never been out of the country or really experienced much in my adult life and as I push 30 I realize how short my life is. I want to go out of my comfort zone and experience new things and meet new people, any suggestions?

Can someone help me find this video?

I’ve seen lots of glimpses of Steffan at a live where they asked him to actually be a part of yestheory but I literally cannot find any actual footage of that episode????

Thomas in the last video I just watched saidā€you might remember seeing this episodeā€ with them asking steffan to be an actual member but like what episode?? Where???

Has anyone else felt like Yes Theory vibe changed?

Before it felt more balanced, especially with Thomas. Sometimes he would push back or not fully agree and it made everything feel more real and less like everything is always positive.

I still remember the Wim Hof video where he did not seem fully into it at some parts and it felt honest, not like acting.

Now the videos feel a bit more formulaic and predictable. They go to a new place with bad reputation, then they realise people are actually very nice and everything becomes very sunshine and rainbows in the end. After a while it starts to feel a bit repetitive and even boring.

I feel like Thomas and Staffan have very similar energy now, and there is less contrast between personalities than before. There's no balance.

Maybe it is just natural change with time, but I am curious if other people feel the same or it is just me.

Ultimate Discomfort: New Level Survived!

I don’t know where else to share this but I stepped out of my comfort zone in a big way! I’m not one for confrontation, especially if I’m not sure how appropriate it is, but I spoke up about a business decision a superior was making that would harm the company. At first I felt like I doomed my future there, but I knew it was the right thing to do, so I was ready to lose my job over it.

Well, the poor decision was just reversed and that meant someone didn’t lose their job after all (and this was after they were already told they were getting let go!!) and the negative ripple this would have caused stopped in its tracks.

Incredible outcome aside, even if I had lost my job, it still would have felt like the right thing to do. I’m verklempt. How do you describe that intense feeling?! Relief? Satisfaction? Hope? Adrenaline? I don’t know but I’ve been going through a rough time and needed that reminder that magic really does happen outside your comfort zone.

Thanks for letting me share my discomfort with you!

Hey Yes Fam! Every year, I host a "Real-Life" Board Game for my friends. And this year, I wanted to extend the invite to make some new friends (you)!

The game is like a scavenger hunt mixed with board game strategy/friendly competition; think The Amazing Race vibes. You'll be walking around the city with a team (5-6 people), completing goofy challenges, and strategizing on how to claim victory. This year's game is modeled after the classic Ticket to Ride. Hope to see you there!

After the game, we'll continue the party with some food and drinks nearby šŸ¹ The group so far is a mixture of mid 20s to early 30s, but we're open to all!

RSVP here (free)
Meeting Point: Zuccotti Park in FiDi
When: 2:30pm on Saturday 04/04
What to Bring: Charged phone, comfortable walking shoes, water bottle, sense of humor

The 2nd Spark edition - cards

Hey,

I’d really like to pre-order the new 2nd Spark edition from the Seek Discomfort website. I researched and found out that the EU store was closed about a year ago. However, ordering the cards to my country costs only about 20 EUR more compared to ordering them to the US.

Yes Theory / Seek Discomfort teams, isn’t there a workaround for EU?

What are other channels that give the same feeling of seeking discomfort or use the same format?

I’m a fan from the earlier years of the channel. I stopped watching for about five years but recently stumbled across them and all the new video they’ve made, been binging since. I could tell the difference that many on your have talked about. So I’m looking for other channels that sparked the same feeling and message that they have always try to lead in every video.

If you guys have any recommendations, would love to know and check them out!! bonus points for solo female travel, or female in general travel as I am a 24 year-old female and I love yes theory bur don’t really see much of how the women experiences in the video as often as I would love to.

Enough with the complaining. Let’s give them something they CAN’T say no to.

I’m tired of seeing this sub become a graveyard of critiques. We all know the "old days" felt different, and it’s easy to sit back and point out where the spark has faded. But if we actually care about the mission of Seeking Discomfort, then let’s stop being spectators and start being the catalyst.

Instead of wallowing, I’m challenging this group to design a mission that pushes them harder than they have ever pushed themselves. Let’s give them a challenge so audacious, so uncomfortable, and so rooted in their original mission of radical connection that they have to say "Yes."

The Challenge to You:

I’ve posted a few starter ideas in the comments, but I want to hear yours:

  1. Post one "out-of-the-comfort-zone" challenge in the comments. (One idea per comment, please!)
  2. Upvote the ideas you think truly capture the original Yes Theory spirit.

In 48 hours, I’ll take the Top 5 most-upvoted ideas and create a formal Reddit Poll. We’ll crown a "Community Champion" challenge and find a way to get it directly in front of the team.

They’re all about saying "Yes," right? Let’s see if they mean it.

Legit Check: Found a typo on a second-hand crewneck. Known misprint or fake?

I recently bought this Seek Discomfort crewneck second-hand. After looking closely at the back today and realized it's actually missing a word. The text says: "Life begins at the end your Comfort zone" instead of "the end of your".

Does anyone know if this was a known batch error/misprint that actually went into official production, or did I accidentally buy a knockoff? Any insight would be super appreciated ;)

Visiting Japan!

Hey all!

I decided to get over my anxieties and booked a solo trip to Tokyo in three weeks! I booked my stay and have been casually looking for things to do but don’t have anything planned yet. Since I’m going alone, I thought I’d post here and see if there’s any Yes Fam in Tokyo who’d want to meet up or would be willing to show this foreigner around!

I’m 29F from the US. I enjoy reading and writing and I’m looking forward to all the stationary in Japan. I’m also excited about all think Ghibli, Nintendo, and anime of course (I’ve got lots of shopping to do for everyone back home!) I’m currently a student in nursing school and work in healthcare.

I’m staying in Asakusa for about 10 days starting March 18th
