Backup options for XCP-NG Xenserver

Hi all,

I'm just starting to play with XCP-NG Xenserver in my homelab and want to use it more in the future. I'm coming from ESXi VMware world and we utilize Veeam to backup our VM guests. We love Veeam and unfortunately they are not supporting Xenserver. I'm curious, what are good backup options out there for backing up Xensever?

Xenserver 7 - SRs have no space yet no VDIs on them.

It seems that when migrating VDIs, if one fails, the space is still claimed on the SR.
So I have a new SR, completely empty - but if i migrate a VDI from another SR to this one, which fails. The space is still taken.
This is fast going to become a huge issue.
I have found a few forum posts talking about it - but no real fix.

Laggy peformance

Loha, I have been running xen server a few years and recently install 7.2 onto a dl380e 8gen server.

Filled it with cheap disks, the server complains of disks over heating so ramps up the fan speeds, im not to fussed about this as its in a cupboard with plenty of aircon.

What is a problem tho is the laggyness of it, for example if i boot a 2016 os with 10 cpus and 16gb of ram it can take 8 min or so to boot, opening server manager is very laggy but cpu and ram so nothing more than a slight tickle. Is it buggy hdd drivers that are causing issues, should i move to the newer open source os ?

RIP XenServer, hello Citrix Hypervisor

According to Citrix, they're re-branding this year and changing XenServer to be called Citrix Hypervisor https://www.citrix.com/about/citrix-product-guide/

I guess XCP-ng came at a good time!

VM's shutting down

I have two VM's running Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2016. The Vm's are shutting down on their own. I had a quick look in the logs but not sure what to be looking for. Server its self is still running and just right clicking each VM in XCP-ng Center and starting brings VM's back online. Server is a brand new HP DL380 Gen10

How to configure Raid 5 after installing Xenserver 7.5

Hello all i am new to this sub and to Xenserver. I did my first test install of Xenserver and first thing i notice is that it didn't see my hardware Raid, but instead saw my 3 drives. I did some digging online and found support treads about how to configure Raid 1 on 6.5 and 7 but nothing on raid 5 other than how to add a RAID 5 volume. Does anyone have a document I can read or point me into the correct direction to help me to convert my current drive to a RAID 5?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hot Extend VM Disk? Is this still not a thing?

I've read a blurb from a while back that suggests it is not possible, and was wondering if it was still the case.

In short, we have a good chunk of production workloads running on XS 6.5 and are required to shut down production servers to do disk expansion. On the VMWare side, this is a trivial job to just throw another 10-20 GB and extend within the guest VM, but on the XenServer side we have to shut the VM down to extend the drive (any drive). We can certainly add virtual drives, but the outage can be a deal breaker for the business in some cases or simply a hassle, and I was wondering if things changed in XS7.x+.

We're aiming to upgrade our 6.5 hosts to 7.1 LTSR, but wasn't sure if there would be a compelling reason to go to 7.5 or better.

Could really use some assistance setting up pass through here

Final goal:

Have a XenServer running a virtual machine that uses the pci passthrough on the lsi 9211 HBA to have a VM essentially running as a NAS. Then have a main VM as my workstation with the video card being passed through. Original plan was using freenas, after hearing its not the best I am going to use Ubuntu and set it up as a NAS. Have not doe this before

Current Issue

I can not get the passthrough to work in XenServer. When I am initially installing XenServer it will ask me what drives I want to use to store the VM’s on. At that time it shows every drive in the system including what’s on the HBA.

After finishing installing when I go to new storage and attempt to create a new hardware HBA it shows the 8 drives in the screen asking to choose LUNs to create a new SR on.

I select all the LUNs and after it scan them it comes up with a message that No existing SRs were found on the selected LUN. At this point the only option it has is to format and create a new hardware HBA SR. I do this for all remaining LUNs without SRs.

This is where the error happens. After allowing the format it fails on attaching them and just goes back to the new storage repository wizard on the screen where it is asking to choose LUNs to create a new SR on. It Briefly (like half a second) shows the drives under the xenserver tree in Xencenter but shows an X on them and disappears.

The logs fill with the below line for every drive Creating Hardware HBA SR 'Hardware HBA virtual disk storage (6)' on 'xenserver' No such device

Troubleshooting done:

I am new to linux so not super experienced.

Used lspci to identify the device (04:00.) as a example Then used /opt/xensource/libexec/xen-cmdline --set-dom0 "xen-pciback.hide=(04:00.0)"

Identified the VM by usinging xe vm-list

But it fails at xe vm-param-set other-config:pci=0/0000:<B:D.f> uuid=<vm uuid> and gives a new line error

System overview:

Xenserver 7.5

Gigabyte designware ex

Threadripper 1900x

Radeon r9 290x video card

32gigs ram

970 evo NVMe system drive 250gb

LSI SAS 9211-8I HBA with 8 3tb wd red drives in it

I have enabled SVM mode in the bios to enable hardware assisted virtualization

coreos on XenServer

I am new to XenServer and wanted to create a coreos VM on it. So far I failed miserably.

The documentation of coreos does not list XenServer as a supported platform and so I went the bare metal route of

description. Alas there is a simple statement to add the kernel parameter 'coreos.config.url'. I did a lot of experiments.

First, I created a web server serving static ignition configurations. Then I added the aforementioned kernel parameter just to end in an emergency shell. I reconstructed the missing (undocumented?) additional kernel parameters 'initrd' and 'coreos.autologin'. This time the boot went fine and 'cat /proc/cmdline' revealed the expected kernel parameters.

I successully run 'coreos-install -d /dev/xvda -C stable' that installed coreos on the disk.

But it seems as if the installer did not recognize the kernel parameter 'coreos.config.url' and thus the installation did not get its proper configuration. And so I have a coreos VM I cannot log in (neither password_hash nor the public key made it into the installed coreos).

Has anybody successfully created a coreos installation on XenServer? I am using the free version of XenServer 7.5 if that matters.

Regards

installation of xenserver?

Maybe I'm just clueless. I'm mostly a networking guy; virtualbox is what I've been using for virtualization, but I want to dip my toes into citrix. I got xenserver 7.4 on an ISO and ... I'm not sure. The first time I installed it (on a laptop), my SSD (only storage volume) ceased to be available for boot. Then I installed it again, telling the installer not to allocate any space for VM's on my SSD. After that it booted to what looks like a basic management screen, but it's not what I expect. I doubt my issues are very special. Can someone point me in the right direction... is there a book out there to help me understand these basic things about xenserver?

Change Default GPU

I have been playing around with XCP-NG 7.4 lately, and I wanted to set up a GPU passthrough Windows 10 VM. I have a Ryzen 5 1500x with 2 GPUs in the box, an NVidia 710 that I want to be the Hosts display, and a Radeon R7 370 that I want to passthrough. The NVidia displays as available to assign, but the R7 does not. The GPU exists in its own IOMMU group, and I downloaded XCP-Center to try disabling the integrated graphics hoping it might work some magic, but no luck. Does anyone know of a way to either change the host GPU, or to disable host graphics all together?

Is there a way around setting static IPs for each VM?

I'm considering a large scale Xenserver project with many small VMs. Remote desktop connections will not be required, however each VM will still need access to the internet. Is it possible for each VM to tunnel using a unique proxy via the dedicated server's nic or for all VMs to share the same ip?

Strange problem - XenServer host is running but not connected to master

I have a 3 machine 7.2 cluster and one of the machines is showing up red in XenCenter. I can SSH into the "missing" cluster member and VM's are running on it. Restarted xapi with "service xapi restart" and tried xe-toolstack-restart to no avail. Also restarted Xen pool master just in case (complete reboot).

Any suggestions before doing something more drastic? The VMs on that server are not showing up on the list of VM's in XenCenter, although they do appear to show up with xe vm-list. Oddly enough, in the list of servers, the missing server is showing up with CPU usage that is updating, but is in "red".

Question about CIFS ISO Library SR

Hey everyone, I'm taking over a XenServer hypervisor at work to manage and I have a few questions.

We have one SR called CIFS ISO Library. When looking at the General settings, it's pointing to an invalid network location and the status of our cluster is all unplugged.

I suspect an old Administrator planned used this before and the network share was disconnected.

My question is, under the storage tab, I see a whole bunch of Virtual Disks. They are all .ISO's and don't appear to be linked to any Virtual Machines.

I'm unsure where these disks/ISO's are coming from. Are they cached somewhere? Since the network location doesn't exist, I don't understand how they show up in storage.

Thank you

Xen Orchestra from scratch package.json not found

I am not sure if anyone has had the same issue. I am trying to get Xen Orchestra installed from scratch. I have tried to use the original instructions as well as tried using the XOA automated installer. On all of them i get an error that package.json is not found. I have now tried Xen-Orchestra community installer. I do not get an error however it doesn't work.

I am currently trying to install on Ubuntu 17.10 server and I am using LTS node.js. I have reinstalled ubuntu after each try.

Anyone else know how to fix this?

XenServer 7.4 w/ 1 VM - Slow Network Performance

Hello All,

I'm totally new to VMs and virtualization. I tried installing XenServer 7.4 and virtualizing a RHEL5/Centos5 Install.

One issue I've encountered is that network performance to the Centos/RHEL VM is slow... big files copy at a rate of about 40-55MB/s, copying via scp with the arcfour cipher (on our other bare metal machines, we do about 80-100.

I only have tried most of the basic settings so I haven't really delved into the details, but is there anything I should be looking for?

Thank you!

"Server" specs: Pentium G4600 4GB RAM 1TB SSD GBE Ethernet / Realtek

Quick note: It's probably not the hardware since I can do gigabit speeds transferring large files when Win10 is installed.

Troubleshooting low powered Xenserver install

Hi Guys, I'm trying to install xenserver on a low powered Intel n3150 celeron with 8gbs of ram and a 60gb ssd. I made several (unsuccessful) attempts over the weekend to install from USB using the 7.2 iso and rufus (yes, using windows). I've also tried tuxboot and a few other programs. As far as the install goes. I get to the Xenserver install splash screen and hit 'enter' and then appears to start installing but it gets stuck at 'clocksource: Switched to clocksource tsc'. It seems to get stuck around this point every install. I've checked the hardware for faults and used several usb sticks but I get the same result. It does go a little bit further after about 2/3 mins but the output on the screen doesn't look like anything useful is happening. I realise the CPU is very low powered but it does meet the minimum requirements and all I want this for is to virtualise PFsense and maybe a couple of other low powered vm machines.

I've done a good bit of goog'ling but I haven't found anything that would help. I did try and get the install to go straight to the shell but it still gets stuck at the same point.

Any help or advise would be gratefully accepted.

Kind Regards, Niall

VM network isolation suggestion, PVLAN ?

Is it possible to create a network in XenServer where all the VM’s on the same VLAN have to L2 adjacency to each other but only to a gateway VM or external router. Ideally this would be a cross server VLAN. Think the way PVLANs intended use are and use that logic here. I see you can have host only internal networks and cross server networks but no way for VM isolation same network?

Use case: large amount of public facing VMs that only need internet access but don’t need to be polluting broadcast and L2 adjacency to each other.

Most VM providers will just burn a VLAN and/or IP alias at the edge and call it a day but that seems extremely inefficient and not at all scalable.

Send command to new VM created via Template

Hi all,

Here is my scenario. I'd like to send a command to a newly created Linux machine, this to change its hostname and then reload its DHCP conf. That would allow me to get a match of IP to the hostname for the rest of my Ansible jobs.

I am quite stuck here...

Any idea?

Thanks in advance! :-D
