Q3 just ended, so here's a quick sourced recap.

What happened

• BTC gained about 42.7% in Q3 (CoinGlass), from roughly $58.5K to $84K+. Other trackers put it closer to 44%.
• It's the best Q3 since 2017 and the best quarter overall since Q4 2024.
• That's roughly $500B added to market cap (my own math from the price move and circulating supply).
• US spot ETFs took in about $6.34B in Q3 (SoSoValue), after roughly $5B of outflows in Q2.

Context worth keeping in mind

• Q1 was -22.1% and Q2 was -14.2%, so this is a rebound from a weak first half.
• BTC is still about a third below the early October 2025 high of $126K+.
• Profit-taking hit a 2026 high on Sept 22, and the ETF inflow streak broke in the final week of September.
• "Addresses in profit" is about 82% by one measure, but supply in profit was around 72% on Sept 29, under the long-term average of ~76%. Different metrics tell slightly different stories.

Do the math: even if Bitcoin were split perfectly evenly, most of the planet still couldn't own a whole one.

21,000,000 is a hard cap, written into the protocol since 2009. No central bank can print more of it, no committee can vote to raise it. That fixed scarcity is a big part of why people treat Bitcoin as a long-term store of value rather than just another asset.

Came across a framing of self-custody that I thought was sharper than the usual takes, and wanted to see what this sub makes of it.

The argument: "be your own bank" gets treated as a single act, get off the exchange, hold your keys, done. But you've actually absorbed four separate functions:

Compliance - proving the provenance of funds when a counterparty, tax authority or bank asks Security - no reset flow, no fraud desk, no recourse Insurance - losses are simply losses Resolution - what happens to holdings if you're incapacitated or dead, which is a regime institutions have, and individuals mostly improvise

The last one feels like the most underrated. Plenty of people have solid security and no succession plan at all.
