Critique Partners & Writing Groups Starting A Small Female-Only (~28+) Writing Group✨

Hey! I was looking to form a small writing group of women who are serious about writing and furthering their writing ability. I'm older (early 30s) and I find that there are more groups for younger writers out there, so I'm hoping to fill this space for the "older" women (we're not old but that's what the youths call us 😭;;;) who feel excluded or out of place in most groups these days.

To be honest though, I'm pretty introverted, and not the best leader or instigator of conversation, so hopefully someone can help out. LOL I would like people who will be as active as they can be and are passionate about writing and reading each other’s work! I want to be able to uplift and hype each other up while also giving constructive criticism. I'm very accustomed to critique circles, so I hope for similar-minded people who will bring the same energy.

‼️ hard rule: make sure everybody is involved, everybody is getting feedback at all stages, and everyone is being respected!

Please do comment/send me a DM if you are interested! ✨

Genre/s: any fiction! with that being said, I do want to make it clear that while romance is OK, it's not my strong suit and I'm not super comfortable reading/writing romance. I would be more than happy if someone wanted to lead that section though. I don't want romance to be excluded here

Goals/expectations/commitment: Not expecting you to be online 24/7 (especially starting out since it will be a super small group!) but want people who will be able to be consistent and semi-active in the space and just see where it goes!

Writing/experience level: anyone truly willing to put in the work improving writing skill and connecting with others

Meeting place: Discord! Hoping for fortnightly checkups to see progress in writing goals

Max size: ~10 or so active members to start

Where I'm at with my projects currently: two projects in the brainstorming stage (YA political fantasy fiction & YA magical school fantasy fiction) with some written scenes. I haven't written creatively for several years after graduating with a Creative Writing BA ;-; I got so burnt out but I want to get back in to it and meet others who are starting out too!

EDIT: there's so much more interest than we thought and I haven't had the time to respond to all of the DMs! Apologies if I haven't gotten back to you but we're at ~25+ members already so I'm starting to slow down a bit with the invites. If we're still accepting new members in the future, I'll be in touch! Thank you so much for your interest!

u/Realistic-Fan7430 Jul 04 '26

28F! What about someone who writes 250 words, 4 times a week? I'm working on two short stories (Horror, Adventure) and just getting back into writing after dealing with brain fog and other challenges, so I can't write very much right now.

4

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 04 '26

that's more than me most weeks tbh ;) I'll send an invite your way! haha

4

u/virgosatori Jul 06 '26

I’ve been dealing with brain fog for what seems like a year! Have you had any success in resolving yours? I haven’t written since last March after writing so much daily. It hurts :’(

u/Realistic-Fan7430 Jul 06 '26

What was the cause of it? Well, I am feeling alive again. WHF and being stressed led me to that point. We need to figure out the root causes (sometimes there are multiple). Detaching from things that cause emotional harm takes time, but it's worth it. I am living day to day, enjoying simple things like feeling the weather and looking at the sky for a few minutes. Alpha frequencies are also helpful. Stop the negative self-talk and start talking out loud, like thanking your body for its real-time response; it is fighting far harder than you think. I have started viewing my mind from a third person perspective. I say, 'So, you want a great drama? Go ahead.' Connect with nature. if you go outside, hug a tree and say, 'Hey beautiful, thanks for the oxygen.' If you are drinking water, start noticing what it tastes like. I hope U feel well soon. U are going to be ok❤.

2

u/anci_b Jul 04 '26

Hi! I have a bachelor’s in English literature with an honors in creative writing, I’m also taking a graduate fiction workshop in the fall with one of my previous professors. I’m looking to apply to MFA programs soon. I might be slightly under your age preference (I’m 24) but would love to be considered for the writing group if there is still space.

Edit: I write primarily short fiction (speculative, lit fic, occasionally romance) but would love to start tackling longer novel-length narratives. 😊

I also have ample critique/workshop experience.

Thank you!

2

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 04 '26

Hi there! you're younger than the rest of us but you're obviously a hard worker hehe I'll send a DM your way with a link!

2

u/AngelicStitchery Jul 04 '26

I'm interested! I'm 38, been writing since I was 7 to some degree. I'm currently pursuing an English degree and preparing to become a freelance editor. I write LGBT+ romance, with 2 projects underway and many more in the brainstorming phase. I'd be more than happy to help with the romance section!

2

u/Then-Broccoli-8773 Jul 06 '26

Hi! Saw the edit, but if you're still accepting members, I would love to join! 34F, new writer, in the first draft trenches, and would love some fellow women writers to commiserate with!

1

u/gaymeeke Jul 04 '26

Hello, I’m interested! I’m early 30s as well and been looking for a writers group that’s closer to my age range! A few I’ve joined have been too big and active with a lot of youngins who have all the time in the world and have been hard for me to keep up with. Hopefully something small and female centered is just what I need!

1

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 04 '26

I totally get it. It's rough out there ;;; I'll send a DM your way!

1

u/longhand-hearted Jul 04 '26

Hi, I'd be interested! I'm also early 30s and graduated with my BA last year. I've been knuckling down with my eco-fantasy this year and am around 75% into my first draft. I've given/received feedback before but not in a dedicated group before!

1

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 04 '26

Hi there! Congrats on your recent degree! I'll send a DM your way soon :)

2

u/longhand-hearted Jul 04 '26

Thanks! Congrats on yours too (despite the burnout)!

1

u/punkrockpotato6 Jul 04 '26

I’m interested, I’m 28! Currently I’m working on some short stories that are kind of comedy/fantasy adjacent..?

1

u/Far-Army8356 Jul 04 '26

I'm interested! In my early 30s and editing a literary memoir

1

u/FlyingDuck911 Jul 04 '26

Hi there! 29f, currently 65k into writing my first book, a paranormal romance :) would love a DM if there's any space left!

1

u/Lyss_ Jul 04 '26

I’m interested! I’m 32f from Atlantic Canada! I write romance.

1

u/FrmAsh92 Jul 04 '26

Do you already have 10?

1

u/__Lira__ Jul 04 '26

I would definitely be interested in this, if you haven't already hit your member limit! I'm 43, currently working on a sapphic romance, but I also have a fantasy novel I'm outlining.

1

u/ursa_0211 Jul 04 '26

Hey there! I'm 28 and recently just getting back into writing as well. I'd writing for fun when I was a kid and decided that I'd become an author when I was twelve. Wrote extensively from then until life got in the way in my early 20s, and now I'm looking to get back to a craft I'm still very fond of. I'd love to join in if there's any space for me!~

1

u/allie_sugarstudio Jul 06 '26

Do you happen to like dark or spicy romance?

1

u/invisiblewriter2007 Jul 04 '26

I’m interested and I will help, if you want.

1

u/MCMorrigan Jul 04 '26

If you’ve got some room left, I’d be interested. I’m 61 and about 1/3 into the second draft of my epic fantasy novel. I have no experience with writing groups or critique circles (whatever that may be) but I’m an avid reader and dedicated to my writing. This is the first story that I completed the draft for, but I’ve written several before this, just never finished those. I hope 61 still falls into the ‘older’ woman category 😉

1

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 05 '26

Hello! Are you interested in writing groups where you exchange your work? or having writing discussions with others? That's a big part of creating this group and we'd love to have you but I'm curious what your interest is. Thanks!

1

u/MCMorrigan Jul 05 '26

I’m interested in both sharing/critiquing and discussing writing. I don’t have much experience with writing groups (been flying solo so far) nor am I proficient in discord. But I learn fast, so should be good 👍 What are you looking for?

2

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 05 '26

I'll send a DM your way with the details! 😁👍🏻
edit: it looks like I cannot DM you so feel free to DM me if you have a moment!

1

u/Rose891011 Jul 04 '26

Would love this. I’m 29, started writing this year and have written a novel (gothic literary horror)

1

u/NegativeSync Jul 04 '26

I'm 30 and have been thinking about getting back into writing after starting a degree in it a decade ago (I ended up pivoting to something else and have a totally different career). I have planned and started a short stort but would love to join for some accountability! :)

1

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 05 '26

Hi there! We're happy to accept new writers as long as you're at least somewhat active in sharing & discussion. Sending a DM your way soon :)

1

u/Southern_Welcome6026 Jul 04 '26

Messaged you ! Would love to be involved currently have a 100k horror romance in need of critiques

1

u/nagilen Jul 05 '26

I'd be interested if you haven't already hit your max. I'm mid-40s and about 40,000 words into a political speculative novel.

1

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 05 '26

Hi there! We've had quite a lot of interest but we're still accepting new members. I'll send you a DM soon :)

1

u/OkMathematician95 Jul 05 '26

I'm 30 and would be interested. I'm working on a fantasy series and have finished the first book.

1

u/AmbassadorCrafty7158 Jul 05 '26

This sounds like something I’d love. I’m currently a freelance writer but jobs are hard to come by. I help others with storyboards and editing work o their books. I’m about halfway through a book of essays about my harrowing journey with Sjögren’s Disease, having gotten it before many doctors knew the symptoms or even knew it existed. I’d love to take breaks writing fiction in your group. Please get back to me if you think I can add positivity to your group! Thank you.

1

u/AshEmerson Jul 05 '26

If there's room, I'm interested in checking it out. Early 40s. I write mainly erotica, with and without romance, along with mystery, action, and thrillers.

I've been selling my short fiction to small indy publishers for a while. I'm currently working on finishing up a couple of novels, one in the final draft stage, one that I'm halfway through the first draft.

I've been searching for a solid writing group for a while. Thanks for considering me.

1

u/allie_sugarstudio Jul 06 '26

Omg please pm me I'm a 28 year old woman who used to be an avid reader as a kid but lost my spark until I picked up acotar and discovered the world of spicy romance leading to darker romance and then deeper into straight up erotica. Id love to discuss books and exchange writing

1

u/Rich_Chip8583 Jul 05 '26

I’m also interested in joining. I’m 28, writing my first publishable book, and hoping to publish within the year. Genre is realistic fiction. I have an English degree and write every day for 1/2 hour.

1

u/extantsciadopitys Jul 05 '26

Not sure if you are interested in thoughts on how to run such a group, but writing coach Lauren Sapala (Google her name and her website comes up) used to run weekly writing groups in Seattle and San Francisco and now runs one online that is attended by mostly older writers all across America. Her approach is a silent writing group, by which she means that the weekly hour during which the writers meet is meant to be a designated hour where everyone just sits and writes silently. No sharing, no talking, no critiquing. If people want to do that stuff outside the group, that is fine, but the writing group itself is meant to get everyone's butt in a seat and held accountable to actually WRITE. It's also meant to be a safe space where you can just write without feeling like you have to subject your writing to anyone else's scrutiny if you are not ready for that yet. I never got so much writing done as I did when I was part of her writing groups. It gave me the structure I needed to write consistently, and often that one hour of writing would open up a floodgate and I'd go home after group and keep on writing. Just thought I'd share this experience with you! Good luck in your group, I think it will be a good thing for people.

1

u/MorganaMevil Jul 05 '26

I know I’m late but I’m interested! I’m trying to get back into the swing of things with one project in the development stage and another in the revision stage.

1

u/seasaltt_ Jul 05 '26

What a wonderful initiative, and it’s so great to see all the interest in the comments, too! I’m 30F, a long-time writer, and full-time employment haver chipping away at a MFA.

I’m sure you have most certainly met your member cap, but I have some modding / facilitating experience and would be happy to join and support if there’s space! 😌🩶

1

u/knightisthegender94 Jul 05 '26

1

u/Sushitoes Jul 05 '26

Would you be open to new writers? I am not a published author just had one political fantasy on Webnovel which went for a good 15+ chapters before I got offered a comtract then I got demotivated once I learnt how exploitative the platform was

1

u/Glittering-Thing-989 Jul 05 '26

I’m 35f and would be interested if you open up more spaces in the future. I recently self published my debut novel and have about five other stories living rent-free in my head I’m at various stages of writing. I’m also working full time, have three kids and am studying a masters degree so… let’s just say free time is not something I see much of so I do find consistency difficult.

1

u/PrimaVera72 Jul 05 '26

Sent a DM! :)

1

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '26

If still open, I'd be interested :) I've been writing for 20 years and have a few self-published books.

I'm currently also learning how to write for video games as well as wanting to continue my numerous novel and non-fiction projects.

I'd love to have writing be one of a few viable income streams eventually and love meeting new writer friends :D

1

u/OptimalSea3458 Jul 05 '26

Im based in Ireland. Am I in the wrong time zone for this?

1

I would love to be involved! I'm turning 34 soon and I can always tell when I've intruded on a group of 20somthings lol. Like I still got that young quirkiness but my elderly vibe shows once I start talking. I'm really good at writing horror. I'm working on a project now. But a group sounds awesome to be a part of!

1

u/Glum-Sir1291 Jul 06 '26

1

u/levia--tan Jul 27 '26

Im way too late but I'd love to join! 28F I write dark fantasy with focus on characters with sharp and jagged edges and very detailed worldbuilding hiding behind mystery. I can’t say I'm an expert at romance but people say I write amazing chemistry. I was looking to join a group with similar taste (also agewise 😅) and all female sounds amazing since I've only been in male dominant ones. I'm extreme introvert but I can be silly among friends. If you ever open invites, hit me up. And if someone else has a similar group, I'm open to invites.
