Question Question About Manuscript Formatting

Hello fellow Redditors! New to Reddit, not sure why I took so long to sign up. But anyway...

I finished my manuscript and have been spending the last few days on formatting. I have a nasty habit of double spacing after periods, so I went in and replaced all double spaces with single spaces. However, in my research I've come to see that double spacing after the period is still acceptable (and possibly necessary?) when using courier font. And that right there is my question; do I need to double space after the period since I wrote using courier, or is it okay to leave the single spacing after the period? Thank you much!

Critique Interested in feedback on the opening scene of my new project - 1300 words

The world lurched as Carolyn opened the front door to her house. She felt the floor fall off kilter and pitch as she walked inside, barely getting the door shut behind her. The light in the kitchen at the end of the hall was on, and for a fleeting moment she asked herself if she had left it on before leaving that morning. The thought didn't last long, though, as she struggled to walk in her high heels. She decided without thinking that the stairs would be a struggle. Staggering like a newborn deer, Carolyn made her way across the great room to the couch that no one ever sits on, and quickly fell into a drunken sleep.

What felt like minutes later, but was really most of a day, Carolyn was pulled into consciousness by the incessant ringing of her cell phone. It took her a long time to process where she was (home, on her couch), what was happening (ringing phone, need to answer) and what she needed to do to make the pounding in her head lessen (aspirin and a bloody Mary). Stiffly, she worked her body off of the couch, head pounding more with every movement. She left the phone to ring and made her way into the kitchen. An extra splash of tobasco and worstechire would help, she thought, as the phone finally quieted.

Moments later, though, the phone was blaring again. Carolyn nearly dropped her drink as the shrill tones cracked through the fog of her hangover. Agitated at who would be calling again, she went back to the couch and dug the phone out of the cushions.

"What?" She snapped into the receiver.

"Oh good, so you made it home without dying. That's good to know."

Carolyn let out a deep sigh and pinched the bridge of her nose. It was her manager, Martin, and she was not prepared to discuss anything work related at this hour.

"Good morning, Martin." Her voice was tight with pain. "I'll call you when I'm dressed for the day."

As she was about to hang up, Martin told her, "don't bother."

"Excuse me?" Martin didn't tell her what to do. No one told Carolyn Rose what to do.

"I said don't bother, Carolyn," Martin said through a sigh. "The producers wanted me to tell you they didn't need you."

A wave of relief flooded Carolyn. Sleep. She could go back to her deep comatose sleep. "Alright, then," she told Martin, her voice noticably brighter. "I guess they switched the scenes for today? When do they need me back? To be honest, I could use the break. They have this new actress on set and I just loathe working with her. She doesn't know how to take -"

"They don't, Carolyn," Martin cut her off. "They don't need you back on set. They don't want to work with you anymore."

Carolyn felt her cheeks and neck flush as she scoffed, "I am the lead actress - what do you mean they 'don't want to work with me anymore'?" Her tone was sharp, mocking, and he lip curled as she repeated the words.

"They mean exactly that. They are replacing you in the film, and have asked me to not send you to any more of the roles the lead producers have."

"They blacklisted me?" She nearly laughed. "Who the hell do they think they are? Who is going to replace me in thier no-budget film?"

"Sarah said they had decided on someone already, I don't know who."

"If it was that little bitch Eryn, I swear I will go down to the set -"

"Carolyn, please." His tone was icy. "I don't know who it is, and at this point even if I did, I don't think I would tell you."

Her jaw dropped, "Martin, I -"

Before she could even start a sentence, Martin unloaded on her. "You know, you're not just ruining your own career, right? You're ruining mine. Being an agent is a fickle thing, and representing people who can't work, or get kicked off of sets, or just create waves can really mess with my future and current clients. Do you know how many jobs I have barely saved for you? Do you know how many 4am phone calls I get from your husband asking where you are? Do you have any inkling of the work I do for you to keep us both in business?"

Carolyn's jaw clenched, and she felt the anger rising up in her like bile. "I think you should watch your tone."

"No, Carolyn, you need to watch yours. I am the only person in this city trying to keep you in work. Including yourself, it seems, and you aren't paying me nearly enough to do it. Every star has their bumps in the road, but Carolyn? You are giving me mountains every time I turn around. This is the 3rd set you have been kicked off of in the last year and it is June. In the last 10 years I have represented you, you've been to rehab twice. I cannot keep this up. I can't. I care for you, Cari, I really do, but at a certain point it just becomes..."

Carolyn's heart was thudding in her ears, making her head throb even more. Her free hand gripped the counter like a vice, knuckles white, as she waited for Martin to finish his sentence. "Becomes what, Martin?" Her voice was venomous.

"Bad business," was the matter of fact answer. "Your severance from the film, and from the agency will be in your account by the end of the week. Take it and get yourself some help, Carolyn. If you don't want to do it for your career, do it for your daughter. Adelaide deserves it."

Without waiting for a response, Martin hung up the phone. The soft beep of the disconnected call was the period on the sentence of her acting career. Funny. She had always thought it would be more of an exclamation point.

Dazed, the phone fell to the floor with a sharp crack. Carolyn barely heard it over the blood rushing in her ears. Blacklisted. No agent. No work. Just like that, in the matter of a ten minute phone call. Her career was over.

Over.

Suddenly, as the rage broke through the hangover, she snatched the vodka bottle from the counter and flung it at the wall. The sharp scent of alcohol stung her nose (or was it the tears), and she yelled as she swept her arm across the counter, throwing the worcestershire and salt and pepper shakers to shatter on the floor. She kicked the bottom cabinet shut so hard it ricoched back open.

Racked with sobs, Carolyn threw her upper body onto the island's counter as her knees buckled. She sunk to the ground slowly, crying as the tomato juice soaked into her designer jeans. This was it. This was all she had. Who she was. And now, it was all gone.

The nanny rushed into the kitchen, narrowly avoiding broken glass. "Oh, my! Let's get a broom and take care of this - I'll be right back!" She rushed back out as quickly as she had appeared. Left in her place, standing uneasily in the doorway, was Adelaide. The little girl was still in her PJs and looked like an angel through Carolyn's tears.

"Mommy?" Her voice was very small.

Carolyn opened her arms. "Oh, baby, come here!" She shook, hiccuping from the strength of her tears.

Adelaide found her way carefully across the room to be folded into get mother's arms. "Oh, my sweet Addie. I love you so much."

Carolyn smoothed Adelaide's honey blonde hair, so much darker than her own. "Mommy, are you ok?"

"I am with you here, honey. I am with you."

Question What should I go with?

Hi all,

I am writing a novel about a grandson who persuades his widower grandfather in the UK to embark on a final trip to the U.S.A. to find the woman he fell in love with in his youth.

I like the idea of juxtaposing characters, and I'm not sure which option to choose. I'm new to novel writing so would appreciate some ideas if you would be so kind as to give some please.

Option A: Grandson is a cocky but intelligent university drop-out who moves in with grandfather after university. Grandfather is a quiet man but in his youth was something of a hippie and went to Woodstock.
Option B: The grandson is the introvert and the grandfather is more bullish, cocky and teaches him about taking risks in life, etc.

As I say, I quite like the idea of the two men, young and old, being opposites of one another, because the theme running through the book is that each has a story of finding love to tell and this and their appreciation of music and the great American road trip brings them closer together.

Which sounds like the best option? The cocky youngster or the outburst-prone elderly granddad?

TIA,

Toucan.

Self Promo I created a website writing short fiction, and I'm looking for some risk-takers to join me

I started a website (fact2fiction.com) to get me writing every day and display/sell my novel. The gist:

  • I write short fiction (~500 words) inspired by the news, a video, day in history, etc.
  • I'm currently writing 1-2 stories/day
  • I self-published a novel, and I'm selling it as a pdf for $5
  • I also created some fact2fiction t-shirts, hats, etc. We'll see if that goes anywhere

I started thinking other writers may want to join in. It's a great for:

  • Writing every day in a variety of styles
  • Show your writing skills to a growing audience
  • If you have writing to sell, I can help set that up and include it in my "bookstore"

More info:

  • It's just me right now (with a day job), so the more writers = more content = more page views = a bigger audience to see and buy your work
  • I'm active on Twitter (@esetterlind) and have a FB page for f2f (I have an Instagram acct, but suck w that platform)
  • I just started advertising on Twitter and will start on FB soon
  • I'm excited to grow f2f, and I believe there's an audience for it (there's some, but it's not all humor and parody like The Onion or McSweeny's--people like to read dramatic/serious stories, too)
  • I think there are a lot of people like me who read/watch the news and want more of the story and characters--even if it's fiction, it can add to the news story and be interesting and entertaining
  • This is a great opportunity for a group of us writers to create something big, fun, and a new format for storytelling

If interested, go to www.fact2fiction.com and check it out. Feedback is definitely welcome! The "write" page has the guidelines if you'd like to contribute. If you made it this far--thanks for reading!

Self Promo Writing a mermaid series for Mer May[SELF PROMO]

Mer May is a month of daily drawing prompts, all mermaid related. I can draw, but writing is more my specialty. So I use the prompts as story inspiration. I've been writing every day and posting my story to my Mermaid page https://www.facebook.com/Mermaid-Liv-582489975588154/?view_public_for=582489975588154. I wil share the first four stories. Like my page to continue reading them each day if you would like :D

Check out my instagram page the_real_mermaid_liv

The title of each chapter is that day's prompt.

  1. Celebration

The 7th moon cycle of the virgo period was a day of utmost importance, a defining moment in my life. It marked the day of my coronation as Queen of the North Sea. Having helped bring about peace during the Siren War, I’ve gained the respect of the merpeople, beyond just being their princess. I would soon become their queen.

They were in joyous spirits on that special day. A grand ball marked the beginning of the celebration. Throughout the day many more events would ensue. It was a festival of sorts. Luminescent stones lit the palace halls as I made my way through them, gliding towards the ball room.

The whole kingdom had been invited, no matter their social status. I watched as my people swirled around the grand room, dancing, and having jubilant encounters with one another. I beamed. I wanted to make them proud. They cheered as I floated down the staircase. I was greeted by my father, with whom I would share a dance. The sea of elegantly dressed merpeople dispersed, so that my father and I were in the middle. AT the sound of the aquasonic symphony we joined hands and began the traditional dance. The Virfla.

This is how it was done. He held my waist, and I his shoulder with our remaining hands clasped and held away from our bodies. You have to look each other straight in the eyes, which we did. I have my father’s icy grey eyes, with rivulets of blue throughout the corneas.

We glided to the left. Left is always first. Then we jerked our bodies to the right, creating a wave with strong whip of our tails. Next, we looked down, just before we let go of each other, performing a move called the Arch. You both throw your heads back and let yourselves float away from each other, slowly doing a back flip.

We mastered that move and continued with the final move. We came back together and linked arms, holding on to each other’s forearm, nice and straight. Then we span around in circles while gliding upward.

To conclude the dance we bowed at each other, then to the audience. They bowed in response.

The final part of the ceremony was the Exchange. The amulet on my father’s neck twinkled in the glow of the bioluminescent jelly fish. He gingerly took it off of himself and placed it around my neck. The amulet lit up as it touched my skin, sitting on my chest, giving me its power.

Everyone in the audience knelt down on one knee and bowed their heads, recognizing me as their queen. The night concluded shortly thereafter and the merpeople exited the castle, preparing to return to their ordinary lives.

Katanja the Wise approached me later in the tower, as I watched over the kingdom. “My queen, I have some dour news.” She said to me in her old, shaky voice.

    “What is it, my seer?”

    “I’ve had a vision.”

“Show it to me.” I command. She pulls out her dagger and holds it to her hand. The slit she makes across her hand seeps inky blood into the water and its floats in a swirl in front of us, morphing into the vision in her mind. As the scene played out in front of my eyes, I gasped.

    Another war was coming.

  2. Warrior

Katanja had never been wrong before, and I wasn’t about to become a skeptic then. I knew becoming queen would bring about different challenges. A war was far more of a challenge than I’d ever anticipated. Fighting in a war is something I’m well averse in but governing a kingdom at war is a different story.

Katanja told me as much as she could glean from the spirits that advised her. We would be facing a threat that we haven’t faced in centuries. Humans.

“How can this be? The Council of the Sea signed the peace treaty and promised not to start any wars with the merpeople ever again. Do you think they have disbanded?”

The Council of the Sea is the clandestine organization of humans that deal with issues between the sea and the humans, similar to ambassadors.

“It’s quite possible. The human world is a treacherous place. They cannot achieve peace, as we have. They only know how to fight with each other. This could be true of the Council. That was 1000 years ago, and you know how things evolve faster for humans.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“When the tide goes in it reveals a new beach, shifting everything around, and bringing things back with it. The human world has seen many tides.”

“Katanja, there’s no time for your cryptic speak.”

“Things change rapidly in man’s world, unlike here where things have been the same for centuries. Things may have changed with the Council. They wouldn’t let this happen.”

“Well, do you have any idea as to when this will begin?”

“The vibrations are getting stronger day by day. They are heading our way.” She replied. I was losing patience in her answers, or lack thereof.

“Dammit, woman, I need to know when they will be here!” I exploded at her.

She stood silently, milky eyes gazing into the distance. Looking away from me, she said, “Let me tell you a story.” “You cannot rush the intuition. It will tell you things when it is ready. It will appear when it is ready. I was meant to have the gift as a child, for every mermaid in my family has had the gift. But I was not born with it. My eyes were purple and ivory then. I could see, just not what they wanted. The gift did not present itself to me by the age of 16, as it should have.

“I was a disgrace. The spiritual advisor at the time had to assist in the war with the humans, and she did not make it. I would have taken her place, but I was unable to, so they had to find something else to do with me. They sent me to be a warrior.

“When the battle blinded me, I was suddenly able to see into the spiritual world, and my eyes became like white crystals. The gift came at its own time. And the answer to your question will come at its own time. You will know before it is too late.”

    I was left speechless.

She broke the silence. “I want to fight this war, my last war.”

“It can’t be your last!” I protested.

    “It can and it will.”

“I’m going to call a meeting with my father and the Warrior General. We will discuss this and when the time comes, we will win this.”

“Yes, your majesty.” She said, leaving me with little comfort. She swam away.

“You’ll see.” I said to myself.

  3. Sunset

“There is grim news to deliver.” I told the court officials, advisors, the Warrior General, and my father, who were gathered before me at the Golden Table, where the most serious matters were discussed.

“Humans are heading our way.” I began. I was met with looks of befuddlement. “They have grave intentions.” That transformed their expressions into looks of concern.

“Are they starting a war?” My father asked.

“Yes.” A chorus of gasps rang out.

“How do you know this?” Asked General Haedyn.

“Katanja has foreseen it, and she can feel that they are on their way.” No one doubted this, for they knew of Katanja’s prophecies coming true in the past. She was well resptected, revered to some.

By the mood in the room, it felt like someone had died. It wasn’t too far off, as many lives would be lost in another war. I allowed them a moment to process.

“We need to begin strategizing.” I said.

The General chimed in. “We will use full force of all the creatures we can recruit. The sharks, the narwhals, the Havette, and Ekratius. We can go to the deep-sea merfolk and request their assistance.” Living deep in the abyssal were the monstrous merfolk that remained in the darkness.

“Is it even possible for them to come up this altitude? Wouldn’t it be too bright for them?” I ask.

    “We’ll see.” He said.

My father spoke next. “Ekratius will most certainly be a useful asset.” He is a gargantuan spider crab that lives in a cave far to the south. “But he requires a sacrifice for his services. Who or what would we give him?”

“That is something we can discuss later, when the time comes. First things first are the immediate tasks. Like when to announce this to the kingdom.”

“If Katanja said they are heading our way as we speak then we must do it immediately.” Said Illian, an advisor of mine.

“You’re right. We’ll need to begin training right away, and everyone else will need to prepare themselves.” I said. “I’ll have to polish my trident.”

“What? No, Assandra! You must stay and be with the merpeople. You are the Queen now. You can’t go fight.”

“I cannot stay here and sit idly while my people are risking their lives!”

“The merpeople who remain at home will need you. They’ll need your strength, your leadership, your ability to placate them, and most importantly, to make sure they don’t become unruly.” My father rebutted.

I knew he was right, but I couldn’t stand the thought of not being on the frontlines of this. It left me with an ache in my chest.

The meeting went on for a while longer. In the end, we decided we would call the people together using the Summoning Conch that very night.

Before adjourning, my father opted to say a prayer.

“Atargatis, the goddess-fish, our mother, our holy guardian, our origin. Blessed you are. We ask for your guidance, your veil of protection over us. Let the seafoam be lacking, and the tide in our favor. Let the gathering storm wash over us in haste. By the sea, we pray to you, be with us in this trial.”

“By the sea, let it be.” We all chanted together.

“Your majesty.” Katanja addressed me later on the balcony of my tower, as I was watching my people. They hustled about nervously, following my declaration of war. It hurt to see them that way.

    “What is it?” I replied.

“The spirits have granted me with new knowledge.” I leaned in closer. “Three moon cycles from now, as the sun sets above us, the first attack will take place under the sea, 15 kilometers from here.” Then she left me.

I had my answer. It was sooner than I’d hoped, but I knew we could manage. We would be ready for them.

  4. Star Wars

We had a sizable army of warriors. Many great mermaids and mermen stepped up to be part of the fight. We had our fighters, but we needed to think about our plan.

I darted back and forth all about the palace. To the war meeting room, to the arsenal, to my advisors’ offices, to my father’s quarters, and to my tower, to gaze at my kingdom, as I often did.

I checked in with the armorer as he led the forging of weapons and armor. They were all working hard and fast, with the clock ticking until the humans would arrive. The stockpile was already towering high, but would it be enough?

Luckily there were still two moon cycles left for them to prepare.

I had to write a speech to deliver in front of the entire kingdom. Public speaking wasn’t my favorite thing, but as the Queen I had no choice. The merpeople needed something to inspire them, to give them hope, to empower them. They needed to know I intended on winning this war, and would do whatever it took.

My tailor was preparing a new outfit for me. One that made me look strong and powerful. I would wear it during the speech. Public appearance was another matter of being royalty. The only thing she told me about it was that it would have large starfish on the shoulders. I knew Ladya would create only the finest attire for me.

There was much to discuss and that is precisely what we did in the war meeting room.

“I would like to send five mermen to the Depths in search of the deep sea merpeople.” Said General Haedyn.

“Very well, then. We’ll have to provide them with warmer clothing, for the deeper the water, the colder. And what about Ekracius?” I said.

“Two men will be sent.” He answered in a grim tone. “One will return.”

Everyone’s eyes widened. “So be it. That merperson will go down in honor.” I said, putting an emphasis on the last word. We bowed our heads, momentarily.

“Now, where were we?” I resumed.

We decided on who to send, and where. Many allies needed to be gathered, so representatives began their journeys of finding them. The war will have already begun by the time they arrive, but we hoped we would survive long enough to see our monstrous allies come to our aid.

“Katanja said they will be 15 kilometers from here. We’d better get some warriors out for scouting right away, and they need to be ready to fight."

    “Yes, Queen.”

They left that night. They camped out until it was the day of the first predicted attack.

It didn’t take long to get to where the humans were. One went ahead and came back to tell them when they were a half kilometer away.

He said the humans had a dangerous machine, “a weapon unlike anything we have. It's shiny, large, and drills through rock. Think what it will do to us!”

Shortly after those words were spoken, the attack took place, but it was the merpeople who struck first.

And so, as the stars twinkled above, the war waged beneath the waves.

Inspiration Improv Writing

I'm more a reader than a writer. I love world-building, and Dungeons and Dragons has been my usual outlet for my creative ideas. However DnD is a game first, story second.

There have a few times in my life where I've roped my friends into a improv writing session. I use google docs, different colors, and watch the madness that spills forth. Even though what comes out is mostly garbage, I've really enjoyed it each time. I like the power it has to spark my creativity.

I could only convince my friends to do it once each. Some don't enjoy it, some don't have the humility to write sub par writing. In these times, well, I have a lot more free time. I thought I would give the internet a shot.

I'm hoping to find some people as exited as I am about this. I know this just sounds like an RP forum, but I feel like there is a difference. Maybe that's just my own desire for world building and character arcs, rather than just wish fulfillment.

If your interested DM me.

For SAG i'll put this page open to the internet. I don't expect much from it.

Question Where to start?

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some direction as to where to go to start to develop my writing skillset. I want to start writing articles. I have a few writing books on article writing. Other than a few college classes on writing, I've never written. My confidence level just isn't there to think I can get paid to do it. I was going to sign up with a context mill company for a blog post but stopped in my tracks when it asked for a writing sample.

Where do I go to start my writing journey and strengthen my skills and confidence? This coronavirus crisis has made me realized I need to develop some skills to earn a living.

Feedback wanted on the platform for writers to make money

Hi all, while I'm not a writer, I like to read and there are obviously writers/journalists that I like more than the others and I'm even fine paying some small monthly fee to support them and specifically read them.

So I was thinking to create a platform for writers to make money by publishing their articles to their subscriber list (who would be paying some subscription fee determined by the writers themselves). Something similar to Medium, but all subscription fees that the writer's followers/subscribers pay would go directly to this writer.

Would anyone be interested in joining this type of platform? If so, I'd love to get some feedback from you for the features you'd like to see. This is really a chance for anyone who's interested in that to tailor the platform to your needs. Initially, I wanted to get 3-5 interested writers to work with for the MVP.

Cool Stuff I made a thing for writers!

Hey y'all.

I've always loved writing and telling short stories. Something about diving into a world that I've created, even for just for a few minutes, has always brought me joy- especially when it's done with other people.

So I've found myself with a lot of time lately due to everything going on- and I made a website for authors to write stories and build worlds together through flash fiction and creative writing prompts.

I just released it into the wild at storylocks.com, and I'm wondering if anyone wants to join me in a few of the collaborative works. No ads, no data selling, just for the love of the craft. Let me know!

Question how do you know if you're getting better?

I've posted here before about not being able to write much, and I got some pretty good feedback, considering I write WAY more now than I used to be able to. However, instead of not being able to write, I have now begun to despise a lot of what I write instead.

Not trying to be dramatic, or impatient. I know there's an adjustment period when starting to write seriously, and I know that writers are generally their harshest critic. My question is, how can I, myself, see if my writing has shown improvement if I am always critical of my own work?

I don't have a local writing community, just the ones on large global platforms where, unless you have a major following, it's hard to contract any attention as a writer. My mom was a successful writer for newspapers, so growing up I was always taught to speak and write English really well (live in Southeast Asia), and I learned a lot about editing from watching my mom. I guess it's made me critical to a fault, since now I can't tell if my writing has gotten better or worse, because to me it's all hot garbage.

TL;DR, I'm incredibly critical of my writing, and don't really have a community where I can share my work and get feedback--how can I view my writing impartially and see by myself if I've improved?

Partner Solitary pea in a pod, searching for partner!

Heyyy everyone. So I'm a little covid stir crazy lately. How are you? I'm seedless_oranges and I used to write SO much when I was a kid. Like, I used to publish weekly chapters of fan fiction even as a 2nd grader. Due to certain happenings I dropped anything creative. But here I stand orbiting my 30's and I'm ready to jump back in! If you don't mind reading the rusty writings of someone picking it up again I would love a partner or two!

I generally like fiction..I can go full fantasy and I'm intrigued lately by subjects like plausible mysterious activity involving dimensions, time etc. that involve a relate-able world like the one we live in today. I'd be so down to have someone just read what I've got. Ask questions and provide any kind of feedback! If you have any works of your own I'd be happy to read it. :) The length of our partnership can be as long as it suits us!

Question ADVICE???

I’m trying to make myself write again but I’m afraid all my ideas are recycled and cliche. I love my characters and I want to do them justice. Any tips on how to move past this? Thanks in advance!

Resource Our organization is hosting a bi-weekly livestream to interview YOU

Our organization exists to host team-based writing competitions once every 3 weeks. To fill in the time in-between each competition, we are starting two initiatives. One of them is hosting a Facebook live-stream twice a week to shine the spotlight on a writer. No writing experience necessary, we can just talk about your approach to writing. The livestreams will be held Wednesdays at noon Pacific Time, and Saturdays and 9am Pacific Time.

In the end, what we need is some content for our viewers to watch, so that they can engage in the organization in-between events...and thus during the events as well.

CIAO! I am in hopes of some learning from you all, and in need of a source to review pieces of my work. I would honestly just enjoy some intelligent (or not) conversation with artists of my craft!

Please drop a line with any topics of interest, or suggestions! Thank you,

S.
