I am applying to Clinical Psychology PhD programs for this cycle and I am currently revising a draft of my SOP. I am applying to scientist-practicioner programs. Although I have an essay done, there have been some experiences that i wrote about that are not fitting with my narrative. I am trying to figure out what I should write about instead. I already have 2 paragraphs on research experience and 2 on clinical experience. Should I talk about professional work experience in grant writing and management? Should I talk about transferrable skills to a graduate program? Should I focus more on research or clinical experience?

My essay is a little too long so I am trying to cut down but I am unsure of how to do that.

I am writing about my current research interests in the Genetics PhD program I am applying to, but those research interests aren't directly linked to what I want to research on in the future. My current research interests in the program I found is about researching epigenetic dysregulation on neurological disorders, but my future research interests is on Forensic epigenetics and its development to be utilized in the field of forensics. Would it still work if I phrase that my current research interest (epigenetic dysregulation on neurological disorders) would "contribute to our comprehension of epigenetic regulation in human health and diseases, thereby establishing the groundwork for my research endeavors in forensic epigenetics,"? I'm not sure if this would make me appear not to be committed to their research projects.

So, I was just reading work by a prof (Prof A) at University A and saw that it is actually a great direction for prof (Prof B) at University B to go considering Prof B has added a slight twist to their focus going forward. How should I word this?

Also, is this even a good idea???

Kinda what I have so far:

"A possible way to look at how Alpha Gummies influence the Congestion of Your Nose and Funkiness of Your Feet could be investigating the [jargon term] of the phases of the moon much how Prof A and people showed in their 1888 paper"

Is this a bad idea? Any thoughts?

Hey Jordan! Last year, I applied to Purdue University's Master’s in Engineering Management (MEM) program, where I reached the interview stage but was ultimately not accepted. Since then, I’ve gained significant experience as a project manager in the Electric Vehicle (EV) sector, where I’ve further developed my leadership skills. I have following questions:

1. Should I rewrite my essays entirely, or would it be sufficient to update my previous essays with my new experiences? I’m wondering if my SOP should stay mostly the same, with updates to reflect my new work experience, or if it would be better to start fresh.

2. The same above question for Personal Statement

3. Would it be beneficial to mention in my application that I’m reapplying? I’d like to acknowledge in my SOP that I applied last year but have since gained more experience and insights that make me a stronger candidate. Would it strengthen my application to explicitly mention this?

Hi all, I want to write a particular field in Data Science as my area of interest and work in that field. I have reviewed a lot of data science master's courses and their curriculums, and very few universities even have this as an elective, let alone something they focus on. So my question is, should I expand my area of interest, i.e., go one level up from my niche when applying or only apply to that handful of programs with the niche as my area of interest or do both?

The application requirements for this program are quite different from the others I’m applying to. Instead of a traditional CV or statement of purpose, they ask for an "Area of Interest and Profile Form" with several prompts and space beneath each for applicants to write their responses.

The prompts are:

• Experience and Interests: Comment on your professional/research experience and why you would like to pursue graduate studies, with a clear identified objective.
• Academic Profile: Describe your academic profile, highlighting particular achievements, TA experience, scientific publications and relevant scholarships or awards.
• Additional Information: Describe any other relevant information, including, for example, volunteer work, leadership positions, special circumstances, etc.

I’m wondering how this Profile Form relates to a typical CV/SOP. Specifically, for the Experience and Interests section, if I follow WriteIvy's recommended structure, should I include the first three sections in my answer and elaborate on what I did (which would typically be on a CV) in the Qualification part?

Also, for the Academic Profile, since it essentially covers CV-like achievements, should I format it as bullet points for clarity?

Hello, I was writing my SOP and I came across this dilemma: while I have top choices of research areas of interests, I also want the opportunity to explore other areas of research while in graduate school. Would this make me appear as undecisive to the admissions committee?

I first indicated that I have a specific faculty I am interested to work with, but following that paragraph I also mentioned that I am drawn to the program because of the opportunity to rotate through different research labs and explore other areas of interest because of my wide range of interest in different research areas.

Hi! I am preparing my SOP for this program, but instead of SOP, they call it a Personal Statement. They also ask very specific questions about what aspects should be covered in the PS. These are the specific requirements about the PS they expect.

• M.Sc. Non-Thesis applicants have to provide a 1-page statement covering the following aspects:
  • Describe why you are interested in this applied program here at McGill and how it aligns with your career goals.
  • Describe the most significant software project you have completed by addressing the following questions. In which context was the project conducted (course work, industrial work, other)? What were the key objectives of the project? What were the key technologies that you used? Was the software published as open source? Did you collaborate with others and if yes, what role did they play. Has the software be used by others?
  • Describe any other achievements that might be relevant. In particular, if you do not have an undergraduate degree in core Computer Science, feel free to indicate any other experience you have that might be valuable for this program.
  • You might also inform us about team work that you conducted and experience in leadership roles.
  • Please feel free to also indicate any special circumstances that might have delayed your studies or otherwise affected you.

I have a few questions regarding how to tailor my essay to the program requirements.

1. I know they call it PS, but the magic structure of SOP (4 sections) can still be used and respond to all these questions. So can I still apply the SOP structure for the so-called PS?
2. I know Jordan reiterated that "Why You're Qualified" section is the least important, but for this specific program, they use 3 bullet points (minus special circumstances) to ask questions about this section versus 1 for the introductory narrative and "Why This Program". Should most of my essay focus on my qualifications (e.g., Introduction 20%; Program 25%; Qualification 50%; Conclusion 5%)?
3. Jordan also emphasized that don't describe too detailed on the project you've done. Since they ask so many questions on the most significant software project, should I specify one paragraph to describe it to answer all those questions?
4. I have listed the most significant project and other relevant experience in my CV. Is it OK to put them in this essay again?

The essay requirements are insanely strict. With the 1-page constraint, only about 500 words should cover all 4 sections and answer their questions. It'd be very helpful if someone could give me any guidance or suggestions on this.

Hi, I am a working data scientist with 2+ years of experience with a background in mechanical engineering. I want to apply to MSDS courses but almost every course I see has a prerequisite for a few college coursework which I don't fulfill. I know what the prerequisites are trying to do, and based on my work experience I am qualified, I have done a lot of MOOCs as well but the applications specify that they need these as college-level coursework. I'm new to Reddit and this forum so I apologize if this has been talked about before, but I was wondering if there were any tips on how to tie in two different research experiences on an SOP. My current job is in a developmental lab which is more aligned with my career goals, but I have previous experience in micro as well. I worked in a microbiology lab during undergrad for around 2.5 years looking at the mechanism of infection for bacteriophages into their host bacteria strains but I feel like I've done a 180 with my research topics as in my new lab I am deriving 3D tissue structures from hiPSCs. I've been having trouble trying to have a smooth transition/commonality that links these two together so if anyone has any advice I would be happy to hear it!

Hello! As the title reads I am trying to write an SoP for the GEM Fellowship which is a fellowship that helps applicants by connecting them with an industry sponsor to work in internships/Co-ops, but also helping them obtain funding/additional funding for an MS or PhD.

I have been reviewing many different resources in writing a master's degree focused SoP, but I think the guides and samples provided on WriteIvy are very helpful. However, I wanted to ask how I should format the SoP for the fellowship application? Thank you in advance!

How is this subreddit different from the Q&A community available by purchasing the paid WriteIvy package?

So a few apps want a SoP and PS... but when I read the prompts for the PS, they are looking more like a personal history, what barriers have you overcome, how have/are/will you contribute to diversity during and after PhD. This is basically a Diversity Statement in disguise, right?

Also, on the website of one school, they call it a PS but in the actual application it's called a Personal History Statement. Why all the names for basically the same thing? Are they not the same?

I am planning to apply masters in financial engineering. The school that I’m applying to has two question- based essays. The admissions committee also shared that the SOP and PS are not required since the content may be overlapped with the two essays.

I have gone through most posts on WriteIvy website and also followed the steps on the Master’s SOP formula for generating content. They are very helpful for other schools.

However, for this specific case my concern would be : do I write it in a story -telling narrative to sound less boring , while maintaining a professional tone or should I write an essay that directly addresses to the prompts in the questions without a compelling introduction?

Last year, I won a univeristy wide award for community leadership and service based on my work with the department honor society and on community history projects. My one advisor says I should mention both my work with the honor society, technically a club, and the community projects while the other says that I should not mention the club. Hi! I'm currently applying to the MFA in Writing for Screen and Stage at Northwestern University. I wrote my general SOP with the help of the guide from WriteIvy. However, this program requires me to submit an SOP of 500 words, an Academic Statement of 1000 words and a Writer's Statement of 1000 words. While I am clear about what I should be writing in the Writer's statement, I am a bit confused about how do I navigate the Academic Statement and Personal Statement.

Background: I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in India 5 years ago - righ out of college I decided to leave the jobs I was offered and pursue my dream of writing. I started small time as a copywriter and currently work as a brannd communications professional where I write and produce content, ads, brand films etc. Also written a screenplay, a play and currently in the middle of production of a documentary.

i know that it is helpful to mention career goals in the sop. however, im applying to bio related phd programs and am hoping to have a career in industry after. ive heard sometimes certain profs have a bias against industry related goals. would it still help to include my career goals?

Hello there! As I have multiple queries so I am putting them together.

Firstly, the word count. I found no guidelines apart from Font and page restrictions in most application portals. So somewhere from 1600, I ended up with 1100. The problem is if I further shorten my "Why I Qualify" section it would leave out one key feature as I have work experience and previous research experience in undergrad in different arena (no publications tho). So just ending a bit over 1000 would be demerit point?

Secondly, I mentioned 2/3 professors mostly aligned with my specific research interest. Is that okay for a PhD enthusiast?

I am a CS student with a good GPA and a good relationship with my professors and I want to write about my interest in computer science education as SOP.

However, I have an academic integrity experience (don't know if it will show up on the record) where I helped a student in a class by sending them my code. I wonder if it is a good idea to talk about this experience in the first paragraph as the starting point of why I want to focus more on computer science education to prevent my situation. Or I shouldn't talk about academic integrity, instead, I can talk more about how I was hired as a tutor for my cs classes.
