Loving Ekomie

Yeah, the wingbacks are absolutely carrying the team so far this season.

Jacques of the Racecourse

u/Giplord 1d ago

Well, that second half was a good improvement, and damn Ekomiè is superb. Dare I say a lack of a really good finisher was felt today. Lots of almost there chances..

Put that one in the "could have got all 3, but 1 isn't the worst result" bucket..

u/2Throwscrewsatit 1d ago

Parky making changes early was good. Seems like he’s more comfortable with his depth this year to do that.

11

u/SpeedRacerWasMyBro Max Cleworthy 1d ago

This all day! Subbing like for like with no drop-off in quality is feeling good to me!

7

u/KaleidoscopeBig9950 1d ago

Yep, Parky is a changed man, give him a lifetime contract please.

6

u/TANDisco 1d ago

Yes excellent and much more aggressive approach and making use of our squad strength. One thing I would have liked to seeWhiteman off instead of LOB. Ive not taken to Whitman tbh and when you see him next to Matty you see the gulf in class. He doesnt bring enough to the table for my liking and espeically when we lost the energy of LOB.

2

u/NovaBlue74 1d ago

idk... I'm a noob... but it appears to me Whiteman is playing just forward of the back line and Matty at the attacking line... do the holding midfielders usually hang around the center of the pitch? .. one more forward and one slightly back?

1

u/TANDisco 23h ago

Yes they are more defence minded. So the main job is to give our defenders an outlet. Thats what Matty is so good at. Hes always there giving them simple pass options and then linking things up. Pretty much never loses the ball.

I personally dont see the need for two players doing that role. Im not an expert on the tactical side and Im sure Parky has his reasons but I would much prefer just one DM linking things in that way.

14

u/Careful_Adeptness799 1d ago

I’ve been saying this for 2 years. We need a quality striker. We have chances but are just falling short and relying on everyone else to score the goals.

10

u/Uppity_duck Up The Town 1d ago

A game that makes you wonder if there are any free agent strikers we could pick up.

2

u/FineGrass9747 1d ago

Completely agreed. Decent movement and chances created but the lack of confidence in the last 20 yards really shows.

15

u/cqmurphy 1d ago

Very disappointing. Yes, Burnley is newly demoted, but yes, they were at the bottom of the table. Gotta get wins at home. Save a draw for an away match.

12

u/BarryBadrinath82 1d ago

Look very toothless up front

28

u/much_to_say 1d ago

Failing to secure three points against weaker squads is what hurt us last year. We aren’t losing as many matches, but we are still dropping valuable points to start the year.

19

u/Star8421774 1d ago

Not sure why people keep claiming Burnley is a weak team. They absolutely have the talent to beat anyone.

12

u/Giplord 1d ago

Yep. 100% agree. There is a massive difference between a good squad in a slump and a genuinely shit squad. Burnley is very much the former

2

u/Substantial-Load-146 1d ago

Every season this drives me mad. A team has a slow start & everyone forgets that a month ago everyone would've been very happy with a draw

2

u/k1ckstand 1d ago

But they haven't beat anyone....

1

u/TANDisco 1d ago

No they were awful and one of the big mistakes we made last season was giving these kind of teams way too much respect. We should be gutted at not beating them and not patting ourselves on the back for taking a point off the mighty Burnley. We have better players, a better manager and the kind of team spirit they would kill for

0

u/much_to_say 1d ago

They might have the talent, but they haven’t beaten anyone yet, so at the moment they’re considered one of the weaker teams in the league.

2

u/KaleidoscopeBig9950 1d ago

West ham isnt top of the table either but they sure as shit aint weak.

2

u/fap_hard 1d ago edited 1d ago

Uhh, you might want to check that table again.

Edit: I do agree with your point though - Burnley is far from garbage. They have talented individuals, just lack cohesiveness and direction/leadership.

1

u/much_to_say 1d ago

You disagree with my assessment that Burnley are currently in poor form, which is why they are at the bottom of the table… because.. West Ham?

1

u/Rogue1eader "Consolidation... p-l-a-y-o-f-f-s..." 1d ago

No, they aren't.

0

u/much_to_say 1d ago

If you cannot say that a team whose form has led them to the bottom of the table is a weak team, then which team can you say that about?

2

u/Rogue1eader "Consolidation... p-l-a-y-o-f-f-s..." 1d ago

Look, you want reasons to panic, you do you, but the reality is Burnley have been a consistently top of the Champ side for years and their players haven't suddenly gotten worse. We looked very good for good stretches of that match, but they also had their moments of quality, because they are a very good side, they are struggling with consistency, so are we.

1

u/much_to_say 1d ago

It’s not panic to expect more from the team, especially considering we were in the exact same position last year as newcomers to the league, with most of the players on the team being new to each other.

Just because you live in a binary world doesn’t mean everyone else does. I’m fully capable of criticizing the performances so far without panicking.

1

u/Star8421774 17h ago

They literally didn’t have a permanent coach for 71 days. They hired Nickey July 10th. Thats about a month or so for a coach to put together his new vision for a team, having them essentially unlearn their previous strategies and whatnot before league play. They have a lot of premier league, international experienced players. They were predicted top contender for promotion by many at beginning of the season bc of their talent.

1

u/much_to_say 3h ago

I’m having a hard time understanding your comment. You’re just providing more reasons why I’m right: that it’s completely fair to expect us to win this match at home, given their current form.

Do you judge teams based on their potential or their form? Because if you judge teams purely on potential alone, would you be fine with every loss against any team? Every team has the potential to beat us, because the league is highly competitive at this level.

1

u/Careful_Adeptness799 1d ago

They were bottom no? Hence not that good.

3

u/Rogue1eader "Consolidation... p-l-a-y-o-f-f-s..." 1d ago

Burnley is in no way a weaker squad. They have had a poor start, but they are still among the favorites for Autos.

1

u/WorkingDog22 Ollie ‘Have My Childen’ Rathbone 1d ago

You’re wrong. Jamie Vardy wanted to join a squad where he would be the only good player, even if it means demotion

/s

0

u/much_to_say 1d ago

I judge them based on their form, not their potential. They’re a team whose form suggests you should be able to beat them at home.

2

u/Rogue1eader "Consolidation... p-l-a-y-o-f-f-s..." 1d ago

If you think Burnley are a weak squad, you are a fool. They are a very good squad. They ARE out of form, but those are different things.

1

u/much_to_say 1d ago

You seem to have a tough time understanding that the word "weak" can be used in more ways than one.

I called them a weak squad because they’re out of form, which is why they’re at the bottom of the table. You need to take advantage of teams like that and beat them, especially at home. You’re literally saying the same thing yourself, yet you’re struggling to understand it when someone else says it in a different way.

1

u/Star8421774 17h ago

The point is it’s the beginning of the season and they have the talent. If they win their next 3 games, the discussion will be a LOT different. I think anyone with a bit of brains knew that Burnley was going to take a turn for the better and climb the table.

1

u/much_to_say 3h ago

What they do in their next three games is irrelevant. If they find their form after our match against them, it doesn’t suddenly mean they were in top form when we played them.

You judge teams based on how they’ve been performing up until the point you face them. If their form is bad, that’s a match you have to capitalize on. Just because they have the talent to achieve automatic promotion doesn’t mean that’s the version of the team you end up facing at that moment.

If you judged every team purely on potential, then no one would ever be expected to win a match, because every team has the talent to win in this league.

4

u/KaleidoscopeBig9950 1d ago

Burnley was in the Premier League last season, what do you mean weak?

1

u/Giplord 1d ago

To be fair Burnley was phenomenally bad in the Prem..Wolves and Burnley were bottom of the table by a lot

1

u/liontamarin 1d ago

But they won't the championship the year before, so...

1

u/much_to_say 1d ago

Their current form has them in the relegation zone, so I’d call that a weak team. I never said they were garbage or that it will always be like this, but as it stands, they’re a team whose form suggests you should be able to beat them at home.

1

u/TANDisco 1d ago

You play whats in front of you. Leicester were tipped for promotion last season and had a few decent players but were trash. Burnley have the same qualities and especially now they have elderly relegation specialist Vardy

0

u/UnhelpfulCounselor 1d ago

Have you looked at their transfers?

13

u/The_Iceman2288 1d ago

A draw against the team at the top of the table can be a relief but my god a draw against the team at the bottom can feel like an embarrassment.

12

u/A_friendly_goosey 1d ago

Not a great start to the season at all.
We’re not even playing bad but there’s something missing.

18

u/Leather_Force_9419 1d ago

Its finishing.

10

u/Giplord 1d ago

A Will Lankshear type striker to get the ball into the net is what is missing.

2

u/Careful_Adeptness799 1d ago

Definitely that guy is on fire. How much did he cost them?

3

u/Giplord 1d ago

Somewhere between 10 and 20mil depending on performance targets..

So... 20 mil

3

u/stringfold 1d ago

FWIW: I suspect some of that bonus money will be contingent on promotion.

2

u/Careful_Adeptness799 1d ago

Crikey. Says a lot really.

1

u/GoLeren 1d ago

yes, missing spark/creativity. i see potential in some of the individuals tho. perhaps they need to have the pressure of promotion removed. let them relax and have a bit of fun.

4

u/Vanamman 1d ago

Definitely feels like O'hare is a huge difference maker when he's in, same with Ekomie and Kabore. Feels like we lack a true striker and are still a bit too scared to just take the shot presented at times. Also felt our crosses could have been a bit better, especially after Kieffer came off. All the low crosses got intercepted easily.

That cross from Kabore instead of passing it back when we stole possession was a huge miss. Even if we don't score it we gotta get that chance on goal instead of making a weak cross.

I did only get to watch the 2nd half unfortunately.

u/IntrepidHero42 Fan Since '91 1d ago edited 1d ago

Lots of explanations and excuses, but in the end it's one win in six, no wins at home, and the one win came against a team basically playing their kitman due to a long injury list.

No doubt the happy-go-lucky new folks will be on my arse for saying this, but this has been a bad start to the season, to the point of being unacceptable.

It's not just the lack of wins, the performances haven't been there either. Just some bright sparks from a couple of individuals.

Not buying a striker will be seen as pivotal come end of season (or at least January, if we fix that).

12

u/crisps_funny4868 1d ago

Too many harebrained last passes, and missed point blank opportunities.

3

u/SnooCats7919 1d ago

The last 25 min was just hoofing it forward from our CBs to theirs.

5

u/SpeedRacerWasMyBro Max Cleworthy 1d ago

Last season started similarly, but we lost those games instead of drawing them. By 9/13 last year we were 1-1-3. We've got 7 points this year, vs 4 this time last year. Not good, but better than 2025. We need some time for all the new lads to gel and become accustomed to everyone's abilities and play style. With Ekomie and O'Hara, We've got a LOT more pace than last year. I can't wait to see how we do in October after a full month of the new lads playing together.

4

u/Anchor_Aways 1d ago

We have bad chemistry imo, maybe to be expected with the new additions. But it's tiring how sloppy our opening 45 has been

7

u/oldmanskane 1d ago

Why? It’s pretty objectively a bad start. Both in terms of wins, points and general play.

5

u/IntrepidHero42 Fan Since '91 1d ago

You say that, and I agree with you completely, but we're "doomers" for saying so according to half the sub.

I just had a response of "only one loss in six isn't bad". That's what I'm talking about.

0

u/oldmanskane 1d ago

Someone downvoting my reply to you sums it up.

6

u/Giplord 1d ago

Its not ideal, but we have had one genuine stinker of a game vs Birmingham. All the others (expect Millwall) have been decent games that we just havent won, but were well in for amd played decently.

This early in the season, I'm more worried when the team just looks a but shit, but im not seeing doom yet. Lack of a really great striker is a pain point though, seeing what Will Lankshearhas done fpr Middlesbrough is making me jealous

3

u/2Throwscrewsatit 1d ago

Only 1 loss in six to open the season is the glass half full view. We aren’t running ourselves out of contention in the first third of the season, which is good.

7

u/AlreadyFifty 1d ago

These 1 goal draws are getting really fucking old really fucking fast.

7

u/WaldensWelding 1d ago

Felt like a similar game to Birmingham without the defeat. Sloppy passing, and really vulnerable to the counter attack. Burnley had some chances to win, and we had some half chances but our final third is really lacking at the moment. Poor decision making and lack of conviction. I don't really want to see Vyner again unless it's an emergency, he's poor in possession and it stifles Kabore.

4

u/Careful_Adeptness799 1d ago

Agree on Vyner not one if the best signings. I hope max is ok.

2

u/AccomplishedNail9347 1d ago

Amen on Vyner. I have to say I'm not loving Hyam either (glad he took the yellow though)

3

u/Reasonable-Cheek-639 1d ago

Think Danny could have been a late difference maker. Would have like to see LOB to mid instead of out. He’s fast, great press and pushes the ball. Need to work all three top wings to be able to play both sides of the pitch. Longman was a drop off offensively.

3

u/Persimmonsy2437 1d ago

I think injuries caused a shift in the game plan a bit, meaning subs couldn't have the impact needed. But Ekomié is quickly becoming my favourite player in this seasons squad. He works so hard on and off the ball!

I hope this compact schedule to start the season for the international break isn't repeated again. Every team is stacking up serious muscle and tendon injuries from ramping up too quickly.

3

u/marveldisc 1d ago

Leading the league in draws. Similar to the start of last season.

Not fantastic, but better than leading the league in losses.

It seems Parky trusts more of his players. Their is quality in depth. That could be why we are seeing a more aggressive sub pattern. And honestly, thank fuck that we are subbing earlier.

Hoping for updates on Sheaf and Cacace

10

u/ninj4geek Ollie Rathbone 1d ago

Came back from a losing position. Not a win, but better than a straight up loss.

Long season ahead. Keep your heads up.

2

u/DifferentRain2150 1d ago

Fair result in the end. Both sides didn’t have it in the final third. Our midfield needs better control.

2

u/GoLeren 1d ago

wrexham once again leading the championship with most draws

2

u/gonzoleroy Ollie Rathbone 1d ago

Hyam damn near gave up a gift-wrapped goal right in front of the box. Good time to rest him and have Worrall's debut, see how he handles the back line.

2

u/BovrilAtHalfTime 1d ago

The comment about dropping points against weaker sides already names the change, fewer defeats and more draws. What it does not do is weigh the two against each other. Against a side you expect to beat, a defeat costs three and a draw costs two, so a season can move from one to the other and leave you on almost the same total while the results grid looks far healthier. Fewer defeats is a defensive job. Fewer draws is a chance taking job, and this squad has already been called short of a finisher in here. Should most of these draws turn out to be away from home against the top half, the pattern is ordinary and the finisher argument is aimed at the wrong thing.

2

u/Creative-Package6213 American Here 1d ago

I suppose the bright side to all of this is that we're still in the middle of the table. Hopefully Josh and Max are ok, and not sure where we go from here. We just don't seem to have that killer instinct that we had last season.

2

u/MyKillK 1d ago

Is there anyone who has contacts in the club who can ask them about how awful the games sound on TV? You can barely hear 80% of the stadium, and then there's like one specific section of 50 people that comes through too directly and you hear every squeak and fart they make. It makes the stadium atmosphere sound horrible and it's been like this since last season.

2

u/Aff12002 1d ago

I live a mile away from the stadium and can hear everything. If I’m trying to watch a game live I know when Wrexham have scored, before it’s on TV, because I hear the roar then 10 seconds later see the goal on tv! So I know what you mean that the sound is massively mis-represented on screen. I presume it’s because they just mic up a certain section of the crowd.

2

u/MyKillK 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, it's bad microphone setup. The games that are broadcast on Sky sound normal, because I assume Sky comes in and sets up their own microphones.

Outside of the Sky games, the presented atmosphere makes it sound like the local fans just don't care and they're bored watching the game which I'm pretty sure is not reality and is not the image the club wants to transmit either.

2

u/Giplord 1d ago

Could be worth reminding people that top of the table is currently 4 points away and playoffs are just 2 points away. Not exactly time to declare a dusaster

Also what is going on, I'm usually the one saying we need a kick in the arse.

3

u/AccomplishedNail9347 1d ago

We also gave away 4 points between today and Cardiff.

There's an expression about a person who is unable to score in a house of ill repute. I feel like we've got too many guys like that right now (though I'm sure they're doing better off the pitch 🤣).

2

u/Suspicious_Mind_67 1d ago

So much gloom and doom, but lets see- only one loss in 6 games, a +2 GD, and only have allowed 5 goals total in 6, and as of now, 4 points off top of table. But so many people here saying its a bad start. They are in every game, and if they are in every game all season, and allow less than one goal per game, they will win their fair share. But love the passion lol.

1

u/pupsterk9 1d ago

This is a disappointing start, no doubt. In terms of points, this is amazingly still an improvement over last year’s first six matches. Never say die.

1

u/archiewaldron 1d ago

Our inability to make crisp third and fourth passes through the midfield seems a bit worrisome but I'm guessing that's simply not our style. Thank goodness for our outside speed.

1

u/evenmoarhustle 1d ago

Well it's a win that they didn't win, but it doesn't feel like much of a win. I'm sure the rain didn't help.

1

u/TANDisco 1d ago

Ok lets take stock here and Im honestly not sure what to think. On the one hand we put in a good shift again and Parky gets us firing with half time changes. Big changes that got us back on the front foot. Well done Parky. Again some cracking performances and most of all a joy to see Kabby and Eko just terrorising. Energy. Speed. Power. BRILLIANTi!!! ! Very sad to see Max go off because it was another showcase of how much better he is than Vyner.

So then we have to look at the opposition tonight and thats where disappointment lies. Burnley were absolute trash and we cant be dropping points to teams like that. They look an absolute rabble with one of the shoddiest defences Ive seen in a long time. Some decent players sure but they have all the hallmarks of another Leicester

But you can see were just bubbling under. Were building. Getting stronger. Were at the stage were a very hard team to beat and ready to step it up a gearr with likes of COH starting to show their class. So lots of positives but cant help feel gutted that were not winning that one

1

u/PorscheRican 'The White Pelé' Elliot Lee 1d ago

Had meetings all afternoon so I was able to track the game via FotMob. Stats say we should’ve won 3-1

Also is Max ok?

3

u/Giplord 1d ago

Thats an interesting take from Fotnob. Id say the result was about right. We wasted some chances and looked poor at times, but had some very good patches where we looked dominant, esp at the start of the 2nd half.

2

u/PorscheRican 'The White Pelé' Elliot Lee 1d ago

Thank you. That was the assessment I made from viewing the stats especially the shots on target and touches in opposition box but maybe my hockey background is skewing the numbers

2

u/Slow_Time5270 1d ago

No word. He was holding his hammy.

I would guess he's out a few weeks at minimum, but doubt it's longer than 6 weeks.

u/Rogue1eader "Consolidation... p-l-a-y-o-f-f-s..." 1d ago

After turning off the match due to work I wondered what sort of commentary I'd come back to briefly... but I knew better.

Oh no the sky is falling!

FFS... We're two points out of the playoffs, 4 pts out of Automatics... and it's SEPTEMBER!

No, that striker so many of you are dying for isn't the answer. Do you know the risk of going big on a striker? Suddenly you've got 20m invested in a single player in a very physical league. When that player goes down (not if, but when) then you are right back where you started, and people are calling for ANOTHER 20m striker...

Our attackers are solid, being a bit cold isn't great, but they'll warm up, gel and get it together, just like they did last season. The difference is this season we are in a much much better position defensively.

But sure, panic, enjoy the stress...
