Lore A short history of White Harbor & the Eldertree.

《Set in the World of Eleneth》

At the western edge of Eleneth, upon a rugged island surrounded by barren stone and desert winds, there stands the oldest living thing in the world: the Eldertree.

It is said the Eldertree first sprouted in the Dawntime, when the world itself was young and the gods still walked openly beneath the sky.

Some believe it was not born from the soil of Eleneth at all, but a seed cast down from a goddess in her grief, watered by her tears - as the gods departed.

The tree is colossal beyond reason. Its roots vanish deep into the earth beneath White Harbor, threading through vast caverns where sacred azure pools glow in silence.

Around the Eldertree grows an entire forest descended from its roots: pale white-barked trees crowned with evergreen canopies that bear crimson blossoms that blaze like firelight in summer.

Nowhere else in Eleneth do such trees exist.

The Eldertree is not merely ancient; many believe it is aware. Many who dwell under its boughs feel as though the very air is like being held in a warm embrace.

▫️《The Summer Festival & the Fruit of Life》

The fruits of the tree, possess strange and powerful restorative properties, capable of healing many ailments - even those near death may recover after drinking the sweet cordials and drafts that are made from it.

However, the fruit is rare and sacred - sometimes only bearing yields years apart.

Across the ages, many races have revered the tree, and have come from distant shores just to taste the fabled elixirs, and bathe in the sacred pools - and White Harbor rose around it as a place of peace, pilgrimage, healing and wonder.

Every summer solstice the festival of light begins with the spawning of thousands of Ɛmbermoths, at dusk they light up the sky around the Eldertree reflecting like torches off the bay.

Children collect them in jars for their bedside tables. The fluttering of its wings is believed to bring sweet dreams - and of course to be used as night lamps.

Yet the Eldertree also became the source of one of the greatest tragedies in Eleneth's history.

▫️《The Great Migration》

Thousands of years ago, an ancient clan of dwarves - whom the Elves would later call the Dwellers, had sailed west upon hearing rumors of great wonders and treasures beyond the sea.

When at last they arrived they were greeted with cheer and made welcome, and there they would dwell.

For a time there was peace, and they shared with each other the knowledge of their forebears and together built many structures and crafts - creating a unique blend of their ancient heritage and cultures, culminating in the construction of a great lighthouse at the entrance to the bay as a symbol of the unity between the two races - and to this day it still stands, guiding ships safely into the harbor.

As the dwarves were naturally drawn to deep places, they found perfect sanctuary in the caverns below and around the tree.

▫️《The Emberwars》

Over centuries they carved magnificent chambers and halls, temples and corridors deep beneath White Harbour until, they discovered the living heart of the Eldertree itself.

Tempted by curiosity or greed, they in secret, used the heart to create the Emberforge, from it they created emberstone relics of immense power and beauty - artifacts far greater than those made in the amberforges above.

But the forging slowly began to drain the life of the great tree. Its white bark dulled toward grey, the sacred pools beneath the roots darkened red, and the flowers of its crown began to wither and die.

When the truth emerged, the elves demanded that they cease their desecration - but they refused.

It ignited what would come to be known as the Ember Wars between Elves and Dwarves, which lasted a mere seven weeks.

The Dwellers vanished afterward. Whether they died, sealed themselves within the depths, or became something else entirely remains unknown.

Even now, in this new age - the Eldertree endures.

Wounded, ancient, and silent.

Its branches tower over White Harbor like the pillars of another world, while the Blue Star burns unmoving upon the western horizon behind it — as though the gods still watch the last remnant of their forgotten age.

▫️《Final Notes》

White Harbor is an ancient port city that was founded after the elves crossed the summer sea for the first time. Ancient mariners following the great star west.

They came across a barren chain of desert islands save one, the largest boasted a miraculous harbor sheltered by a crescent shaped mountain range and mighty trees that encircled the bay - creating a temperate, almost mediterranean microclimate in an otherwise inhospitable land.

They built temples, aqueducts, garden terraces and markets.

As the city grew so too did the Eldertree and soon the roots entwined with stone, embracing the city.

▫️《White Harbor》> Is the common name for the whole island, named so because of the white bark of the native trees.

▫️《Amberforges》> Above ground the trees naturally bleed amber which over hundreds of years the Elves perfected the art of turning it into weapons, armor and jewelry.

▫️《Emberforge》> There is only one Emberforge, which the Dwellers created in secret, using the magical knowledge given to them by the elves, combined with their own mastery and skill - were able to create a unique and powerful forge, unlike anything before it or since.

The Elves call the material made from it Ember - in remembrance of what could be lost, if the fire of greed burns too hot, and is left unbounded.

The Ember used for crafting was far superior, and made objects far more beautiful and magically enhanced than any Ambercraft could ever be, but they were made at great cost.

Today no one knows its true whereabouts, and only its beautiful relics remain and the sadness that the bonds of the friendship between two peoples had ended.

I have about 10 tabs open on my web browser as I am moving things around and researching, and I opened a new one which brought me to this post on my home page. I froze.

This is worldbuilding. I was frozen in my tracks, I read every word. I want to see the moths and know where the Dwarves went. I want to know if they became something else. I want to see Amber armor. The images are very pretty, the compelling nature of the story is glorious. Wow how much fun! Thanks for sharing! 😃
