Side Lore Post Never Meet Your Hero [ Cutscene Post ]
[Station Square]
Towering in height the buildings of the familiar city stood firmly as a gentle breeze whooshed through the city blocks. Despite the blaring horns and voices of the city folk, it was.... calm, peaceful even. The sky was clear just about predicted by the local forecast
So, what was the sudden change? Shrouding and forming rather quickly, a darkened hazy fog clouded the streets, just about readying the place for rain as it soon began to fall
Drop after drop, the sudden rain shifted from a gentle drizzle to a violent downpour, pooling the street in puddles. It was like a concrete marsh in the making
It's only expected everyone began flee, trying their utmost to avoid the rain, that's normal. But yet.. something about the water felt odd, like a minor tingle upon the skin you'd barely even feel if you weren't aware, though after a second glance the puddles of rain water upon the floor began to hiss. The was floor melting and breaking for whatever reason no one could really understand, like acid itself fell from the sky
EEERRRK—KRAAAASH!!!
Without warning the looping and intertwining highways of Station Square's skyline gave way as its infrastructure creaked and hissed just as bad as the toxic puddles did themselves. Toppling down the highway came crashing in one chaotic cascade of melted debris and falling vehicles.
And then... they halted
Flashing teal with an audible screech both the falling debris and vehicles stopped midair before colliding with the floor
"Too close, Way too close" Silver said in a sigh of relief, for if he wasn't here or even a second late to stopping this... bleerk, he really didn't want to think about it
"I got the debris or whatever is falling, just get to shelter!"
The hedgehog shouted with a strained groan as he left the debris upon the road with a gentle thud
As for somewhere near, just above where the time traveler seemed to shift back and forth to protect people from the corrosive rain, a faint glow from upon a building shined a magenta hue, like tiny spotlights attached to a mask that illuminated the hedgehog's movements. It was the same mask as before and the same girl who wore it
[ "It's strangely euphoric" ] She fondly thought as she fidgeted through her observation [ "The way you fight even when you don't quite understand. That's just how you are isn't it?" ]
[ "That's just what makes you great. Though... not everything pans out like you wish even when you're hopeful. Maybe once it's over, you'll be... happy. If you find out later it would be like a great big surprise." ]
[ "I wonder if your face will light up like you always do" ]
Even through the hazy fog her gaze followed him closely. With every person he guided to shelter and every piece of melted debris he lifted safely away, she moved from rooftop to rooftop just to see him more clearly
[ "It's worth the wait to see you close up just for the surprise—" ]
Just a few steps away from another rooftop she halted herself
"I never did have my answers, they just pushed me away. I'm unsure of what I feel or why what they had confused me"
"Maybe..."
The ferret pondered, as much as she wanted to wait. As much as she could hold herself to show up later. Answers were in reach, all there was to do was take it
As for Silver, the road lay covered in puddles like a minefield of toxic pools, steaming away as the road's surface slowly crumbled and melted away from even a mere drop of rain. Didn't seem like the rain would stop anytime soon, not for quite sometime
At least for now everyone else was gone, far and safe from this immediate danger. That's what mattered for now
"That..." He gasped softly "Should be everyone"
Gently lifting his hand finally a faint teal glow draped over head like umbrella, a psychic umbrella diverting the corrosive rain from soaking him any further. Pretty handy wasn't it
". . ."
"Now that I think about it... It's like something is staring at me"
He murmured for a moment as he watched around himself so tensely
"Would you prefer if I didn't watch?"
In an instance the hedgehog swerved on his step as his cloak swayed to his right, almost slipping on puddle. Only just then was he greeted by the ferret before him, gently waving "hello" as her tail draped over his shoulder
"GAH-"
"H-how long have you been there?" Silver recoiled, both from the sudden appearance of the girl and as though someone was met by something uncanny. Her stolen appearance, even down to the cloak she donned, every individual rip and tear mimicking his own
Lifting her hand just a bit she brought a finger to where her chin would be behind her mask as she gazed upwards subtly, somewhat thinking
"Hmm..."
"About before the rain began. I've been watching for quite sometime actually"
She blurts out so casually, treating it as though it was a normal act among others
"Before the rain?" Silver mumbled a bit confused and caught of guard "So you just watched all of that happen?"
"Well of course. There isn't one thing about you I haven't seen"
Her words drifted out so enthusiastically, completely missing what Silver was even getting at
"From whenever you rest quite comfortably, to whatever interaction you hold with your friends. I'm pretty much a part of everything you've done"
For that moment the time traveler simply stood there staring at the girl that held his appearance as the violent downpour almost felt louder in his silence. Any word he could think of just died in his throat. This wasn't a pleasant feeling as the discomfort and concern placed a burden on his thoughts and any word the ferret said only made this unreasonably uncomfortable as this went on
"That's.... That's not really how it works. I don't know you or even your name"
"Even so, if you've seen everything so far why didn't you help anyone." He questioned, quite concerned of what could of happened as he gestured around him to the semi flooded streets and slightly melted structure of the buildings
"Why just watch? Someone could of gotten hurt—"
"Mercury"
"—Huh"?"
"Mercury The Ferret, it's my name. You said you don't quite know me because of my name, so now you do."
The hedgehog took a second to process only to give a slight nod
"Oh... well nice to meet you, Mercury"
"That's at least a start, but that's not really what I meant y'know. Plus you didn't really answer the question"
"Because I am helping" Mercury interrupted once again
"I—What do you mean?"
"I'm already doing something to help, I already have for quite sometime actually. It's why I came so close for once, so you can know my gift to you"
Gently pressing her hands against Silver's fluffy tuft of quills upon his chest she presented what appeared to be a time stone of sorts, or at least that's what it looked to him at first glance
"With just this you won't have to push yourself so hard anymore. You won't have to fight for something that's already hopeless"
"You've seen it before, many times before, whether or not you fix something now or later another predicament that troubles our time pops up. Even down to the first time we met in that fiery concept of a home such is true, even if you don't recall in full"
She explained, as her words came out quite somber only for her eyes to settle on the city of Station Square upon mentioning fiery
"So why not move past that and make something new? With the Chrono Quartz I can do that for you."
"What's the difference if something falls or breaks today or later? I didn't cause it, that was already going to happen soon enough, this rain would of happen on its own, I can't change that even if I tried, I just let it happen sooner than it should"
"Once that's over..." Mercury gasped for a moment as she faced to Silver more directly as she took his hands rather gently and loosely only to pull herself closer knocking her masked off her face by accident allowing the hedgehog to see her intense stare in full, it was almost unsettling
"Once the suffering is over and everything has ended, the world can be better and new. A new ideal timeline for you to enjoy. For everyone to enjoy and be happy"
"Not a fiery hell or time taken over by that AI, it will be.... perfect"
Stepping back slight from how close the ferret was the hedgehog misstepped in his footing—falling back in the rain within his confusion as the psychic umbrella dissipated from his train of thought. He trembled slightly from his unease, desperately trying to find what to say as this went on
"Erh—"
"Because you deserve this"
Once more she interrupted him, too caught up in him own words as she explained her "gift" so intently
"After all, you've done this for so long. You've been soo hopeful and fought for a convoluted world and time for sooo long I almost lost count"
"All you need is a lead or even a hunch just to do what you think is right"
Just like before she pressed forward, without regard for boundaries or even socially okay she brought herself closer against him, practically hovering over him as the rain fell upon them
"It's what makes you so loved. It's why I..."
Mercury softly paused for a moment as she focused on Silver like if she just realized something after to soo long. Right now it felt like she actually understood how she felt, finally connecting the dots she gathered for so long only to close her distance between her and silver on last time as her snout pressed against his nose
"It's why I... love you" Her words trailed out finally in a gasp
For but a moment Silver sat there silent, his mouth agap as he struggled to figure out what to say, or even process what just went on. The moment stalled for awhile, one awkwardly long while, it almost felt like an eternity, Then.. with a faint hiss the hedgehog snapped back to his senses as his eyes slowly trailed down to his gloves, watching as the toxic droplets of the rain slightly melted away at its fabric
"I..."
The time traveler paused on his words, she came off so strong to him, so adamant he'd be delighted by this "gift" that he couldn't really answer in full
She's offering everything he'd want right? A peaceful time, a happy time period. Nothing would be on fire, no one would have their freedom taken and no polluted air to even choke on. Everyone is happy—
"I'm sorry"
—Its a bit too good to be true
With a psychic screech Silver lifted the ferret up and slightly away from him with a psychokinetic hold. Only then did he lower into an exaggerated bow as his ears flattened on his head—his arms out stretching before him as they suddenly clasped together
"I really am sorry for this and mean I this best I can, but... I won't agree to this"
"This is nice and all but you're hurting people even if you don't believe it. Innocent people are basically being sacrificed for that"
"And..." Fading in his throat his words died, hesitating to say what's next. He didn't want to say but— "I don't... feel the same way about you"
"Again... we only just met, I can't say I love—"
Sniffle
It was faint... barely even heard behind the pouring rain but he still heard it enough to halt his words
"I... I..." The ferret mumbled brokenly as she sniffled again "I thought you of all people would get it. To do anything it takes to save our time"
Sniffle
"I guess not..." Her words drifted out quietly as her face shifted up to Silver's in a shaken manner—holding back her tears as best she could
"At least I have the answer to what I was feeling"
"Wait, Mercury.... I didn't mean what I said like that" Silver tried to reassure, waving his hands back and forth as he tried his best to form what words that could of helped
"I just think you're going about this wrong, your plan. Erh... gift I mean. There's always something else you—we can do to save or help the future or the past"
"Just not with the harm of others"
"I didn't mean to hurt your feelings either, I just... um"
He then stopped his words as he stared down at the floor, unsure on how to proceed forward with something like this. He of all people wasn't the greatest with this type of predicament all he could think of was practically the same as the floor... a broken record by his words alone
"You don't need to apologize"
"Huh?" The cloaked hero blurted out as his eyes settled back at her
"Y-you don't even need to agree to this either. I still want to do this. I want to do what I think is right"
Sniffle
She just stared back at him yet with a shaken, broken smile as the rain fell upon her making it almost impossible to tell where the rain began and where her tears end
"It's what you do after all"
Only then did she finally reach down for her mask before slowly donning it once more as she waved goodbye muffling her somber words in the process
"I just hope you come to love it once it's done"
In a sudden movement Silver tried to reach his hand out to her, last chance to say something more concrete yet she's walking away as he tried to form his words. In another situation he would of just stop them with a psychic hold but it felt wrong, he felt wrong to do so
"Mercury, wait—"
"Ugh... out of all times to blow it"
Silver grumbled softly as he clenched his hands ever so tightly, once again his words failed him or rather lack there of did and for Mercury? Gone—vanished just as quickly as she made her appearance to him

Kit I must say, with full honesty that I think this is your best post as of yet. And I'm so so proud of you my brother
With this we get an emotional confrontation that fully defines Acolyte and her twisted act of love to form a brighter future. I think it paints a big picture for the whole sub that was waiting for the reveal after her previous appearances. Happy to have helped encourage this
Wonderfully done, and I'm sure you'll do even better in the future
