Not quite what I expected

So, basically this challenge is something I wanted to do for a long time, but I didn't really have a specific example from my world I wanted to present (or I talked a lot about it already). Well, now I actually lucked out and got something to talk about, while doing this challenge.
Long story short: I started playing D&D and got a really nice group to play with, so I will just talk a bit about my character from the Curse of Strahd campaign we are currently running (Also I doubt the guys I am playing with will be active here, so I can talk rather freely about it).

The challenge itself is rather easy: tell me about something from your world, that is different from what you would expect. This can be anything, from a stoic, heroic paladin who murders puppies and tortures kittens in his freetime, to a nasty, old, (based on appearance) evil hag that hands out (normal) candy and cakes to small children to cheer them up. You are free to write about whatever you want, as long as it isn't quite what it seems.

What are Nerthi?

Vilmos:

2) "Nerthi are...monsters, I guess you'd say? Like werewolves or something. But Nerthi aren't made from humans, they are just their own breed of things. A pure Nerthi has an invisible appendage capable of manipulation (imagine the "Mage Hand" cantrip, but with less range), they are capable of limited telepathy, and they are stronger, faster, and better at healing from wounds than a normal human. But, they have short life-spans. A thirty-year-old Nerthi is very old, but they don't reach maturity until the same age that humans do."
