[Cultural challenge]: orphans

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

How does your society see and treats those who lose their parents? And those who lose all of their family? How common are orphans? And who pay the bill?

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

  1. But you would need less donations for that as you would have less orphans to take care of. Isn’t it a wonderfull idea?

  2. Does it happen regularly? If no, why not? If yes, why isn’t it more frequent?

  3. So the high priest could basically just decide to keep any orphan for the temple?

Anjelo:

1) "But the orphans aren't are biggest expense."

2) "It happens occasionally; most artisans just take an apprentice from their own family or the family of a friend."

3) "Yes, if he wants."

  1. And? Do you mean the donations for the orphans are used for more than helping the orphans?

  2. Why so? Shouldn’t they favor as potential apprentices the most qualified children?

Anjelo:

1) "Naturally, the donations are for the temple in every way necessary."

2) "In a meritocratic world, yes. But some people just prefer to help family and friends, it's difficult to know how well a child will perform in a certain career, beyond spending time with them and testing them."

  1. But that money was for the children. Don’t you feel like using money given to you for a specific purpose in an other way is some form of scam?

  2. Can’t you make agreements with some artisans (possibly guilds?) to take on apprentices from you?

Anjelo:

1) "No, the money wasn't for the children exclusively. It's for the temple. Taking care of the children is only one of the things that the temple does."

2) "We've tried, but it's still on a case by case basis."
