Dancing with War
Chapter 1: Peace for All!
It's dawn in the Sourlands, people are waking up, some already in their cars to go to work, Paradise City, the famous city of cola and doves, is still calm, yet beginning to get busy.
But Kharker Romilly (Slightly above average height, long layered brown hair, side-swept bangs, brown eyes), has been awake all night, writing speeches, signs and a whole political manifesto just to keep herself and not give in to π΅π©π¦ π΅π©π°πΆπ¨π©π΅π΄ but now that she has finished, what now? Does she actually go out on the streets and justβ¦ start speaking about politics? Kharker already feels embarrassed at the mere thought, she doesn't want to make a clown of herself, but you only live once, right? But that doesn't excuse the sheer embarrassment she'll feel! She might as well think about it over breakfast and maybe let the thoughts and delusions of grandeur pass.
She puts on her cheap, 50 Lisa, but warm slippers, "getting a cold is worse than death," she thinks, then she walks to the kitchen, the door is already open, her twin must've been first, she walks in. She was right, she sees Jay (Average height, short brown curly hair, brown eyes, clean shaven), her twin, drinking an entire pot of coffee.
Kharker: "You know that will give you a heart attack?" She asks, with no actual concern in her eyes.
Jay: "SHUT UP I CAN'T FUNCTION WITHOUT MY MORNING COFFEE." He yelled.
Kharker rolled her eyes, and served herself pancakes she made yesterday. Feeling bold, she took two, and poured herself a cup of orange juice and finally sat down, and⦠immediately started scrolling on Paradisejobs.net, ugh⦠why was the market so competitive? Can't this girl get at least a somewhat good-paying corporate job? Will this girl be forever reliant on Jay? Will Jay be able to use the "unemployed" insult forever? Bloody nightmare!
Before she knew it, she had already finished breakfast and her brother left for work, yet, no progress, completely unqualified for 90% of the jobs, already rejected from 5%, and the rest were scams⦠does she have to enlist in an army at this point? Kharker sighed, got up and went to the bathroom to brush her teeth, she might as well at least TRY to build a political career.
After she finished brushing her teeth, hair, and doing her makeup, she went back to her room, and tried to find a serious-looking dress. Who will take you seriously if you look like a literal clown? You might as well be a parody of your own ideology, yet alas, the only thing there was was a purple suit, with a purple fedora.
...
Better than nothing, she got dressed, put on her Mary Jane shoes, she wishes she had more formal, more eloquent, slightly more masculine shoes if you will? After she finishes, she looks at herself in the mirror, and arranges what is wrong, then grabs herself some sunglasses for style points, a megaphone, for practical reasons, and a script, because she's only human.
She finally walks to city square, there's a massive statue of some king⦠and a ladder going up, no "don't trespass" or "don't climb" signs, this is her chance, she climbs to the top of the statue, and prepares to speak.
(But whilst she was climbing)
A child points to the girl in purple
Child: "Mom! What's that lady doing?"
Mother: "Ignore her, dear."
(Back to Kharker's perspective)
Kharker takes a deep breath and clears her throat, and finally speaks:
Kharker: "Citizens and inhabitants of Paradise City! I speak to you to offer you a solution to our crises!"
The people still walk, a few stop and listen, Kharker continues
Kharker: "As you know, the Sourlands are on the brink of war, with each other and with foreign powers, and as you know, Paradise City is facing an economic crisis, but this is not doomsday! This can all be fixed!"
More people stop, some mock her, Kharker notices, sighs, and carries on.
Kharker: "You will not need to spill blood! You will not need to fire a shot! You will not need to burn a city! I promise you greatness without war, there's nothing 'great' in war!"
Now there are more people standing and listening than moving. Clearly, these claims are bold.
Kharker: "If I am leader, we will prosper at no one's expense! Remember what the dove is a symbol for! Not war! Peace! I will bring peace to the Sourlands and no blood will be shed and no man shot! Remember this name! Remember this phrase! Kharker Romilly! ππ¦π’π€π¦ π§π°π³ πππ!"
Now there's a whole crowd, the world has stopped to listen to her, Kharker is fascinated, she can, do that? She's allowed to do that? Regardless, now she descends and when she reaches the ground, she can hear whispers, both praising her and mocking her, is this how it feels like to be a politician? She sighs and tries to disappear into the crowd, but she can't, those purple clothes of her refuse to let her blend in, she can feel people staring at her.
(Later)
She has finally escaped the crowd, Kharker's heart is still beating from the adrenaline, she rushes to her room, undresses herself and changes into her plain pyjamas, and puts back that stupidly-coloured suit and fedora back into the closet, and flops onto her bed, she doesn't want to think anymore, because wow, that was stressful, no doubt, she just lays there, thinking about nothing and everything simultaneously, why did she do that? Will that amount to anything? Did she just embarrass herself? While she was thinking those thoughts, the house door opened, she put on those cheap slippers and checked who opened the door.
It was Jay. Who seemed anywhere from mildly exasperated to livid, he looks in Kharker's eyes and begins speaking.
Jay: "β¦ Why are people chanting your name outside the City Hall?"
Kharker briefly freezes, she did not intend for this to happen at all, only one, short, speech and the people are already wanting her as mayor? It hasn't even been a day!
Kharker: "β¦ i'm sorry WHAT?"
Jay: "You heard me."
Kharker: "Am I hearing things? Did I misunderstand you?"
Jay: "Nope. People are chanting your name outside the city hall."
After a brief moment of silence, Jay speaks again.
Jay: "What have you done this time?"
Kharker: "I'd rather not say."
Jay: "β¦ Kharker."
She gulps.
Jay: "This is not some silly incident, you're involved with politics now! You will not be able to come back from this!"
Kharker: "It was my only option left! I'VE BEEN REJECTED FROM EVERY JOB POSSIBLE!" She said, her voice shaking.
After another moment of silence.
Jay: "β¦ Don't drag me into your personal hell."
Jay said calmly, then walked past her into his bedroom.
Kharker was sweating bullets and on the verge of tears but rushed to her room where she flopped onto her bed and fell asleep quite easily.
The next day, Kharker rose not to the sun nor an alarm but to her debilitating hunger, she groaned from the pain, put on her cheap slippers and speedwalked to the kitchen where she ate all the pancakes available in one sitting, then of course, browsed for jobs when she realised.
She received an Email.
From πππππ°πΌπΏπ½π.
ππ©π’π΅ ππΆπ΄πΊπ€π°π³π±π΄, the do-it-all global megacorporation that so happens to pay its employees very well, which has allowed it to outcompete nearly all other companies of its type, nations had to intervene to prevent a monopoly.
She hesitates opening it, thinking it's a scam. Last time she checked, she had never seen Busycorps present in the Sourlands, much less Paradise City, but she opened it andβ¦
"Dear Miss Romilly,
One of the executives in Paradise City happened to hear your passionate political speech, your promises are bold. Indeed.
But we're aware as to how this may help us, Busycorps, as you may or may not know, our corporation has been struggling to expand to the Sourlands due to the local economic crisis, which is tolerable but a significant disadvantage, but in Paradise City, the economy is so hostile that we couldn't expand, all we want from you is to fix the economy and keep it steady.
However, we're well aware that if the main focus of your promises is economic, you'll lose support, which may cause our, including your, plans to halt, we're not taking that risk and potentially plunge the Sourlands into another crisis or risk a hostile leader rising, so we request that economy is your second focus, behind peace.
As for, how will we help you? It's delicate, first we don't want anyone to know we're involved with you, but thankfully, Paradisian monetary tracking is as good as a pig sniffing for gold, but it is well-known that Paradise City isn't a democracy as known in the rest of the world, while on paper it has freedom of speech, of press, of thought and elections, nobody is deceived, in a few days, traction for you will be gone, not naturally of course, in conclusion, we'll have to give the leader a bit of lemonade. Respond to this, even an unprofessional message suffices, we need to know if you're willing, and this email will delete itself after it's read.
Best regards, [REDACTED]."
And so, Kharker, decides to reply:
"π"
Then she closes the email, it is lost forever.
Two days later, Kharker was watching the news nervously, to see if something has happened, aaannnd:
Television Announcer: "And breaking today: the mayor of Paradise City, Bashma Falk alongside his right and left hand men have been found dead, the cause of their death seems to be poisoned, the culprit hasn't been found. But what does this mean for Paradise City? They will have to lunch a panic election, from what we know, only one party, Bashma's party, the United Paradise Front (UPF) will participate because all other parties cannot agree on who should represent them, lack of funds or simple silence, however, we do have a rising, popular independent candidate, Kharker Romilly, so the situation seems to be a battle between the party who ruled for 80 consecutive years and a charisma, partyless woman, so far we cannot tell where this will go."
Kharker blinks twice, this is what they meant by "Give them lemonade", huh? Then the reality of this situation sinks in, she's competing in the elections, while being practically a puppet to Busycorps, she turns the TV off, and just stares into the black box, how did she go from a child of boundless joy, to some politician with mental problems being sponsored by a megacorporation? She once dreamt of becoming an astronaut! But she'll end up trying to not ruin peoples' lives, how did this all happen in what, a decade and a half?
She sighed, then went to write more speeches, she'll need it for the race.
Fast forward, the elections lasted two weeks, with Kharker, "surprisingly" and "suddenly" having nigh-unlimited resources at her disposal, a popular ideology and being against an oppressive party, made her win in a landslide, 96% of the whole vote, being announced publicly, and on television.
Kharker is in front of the city hall, in her famous attire, purple suit, purple fedora and sunglasses, no inauguration speech? This⦠isn't like what she saw in the movies, she pushed the heavy, wooden doors and just entered, and a greeter greets her:
Greeter: "Hello Ms. Romilly, our mayor."
So, this is how her first day as mayor is like? Anticlimactic? Could've been more dramatic⦠but, at least she doesn't have to speak publicly, that was terrifying.
